Description

P. W. THOMSON.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER. NO.183,7Z6. Patented Oct. 24.1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PRESSON W. THOMSON, OF YATES CITY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM D. ALEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,726, dated October 24, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PRESSON W. THOMSON, of Yates City, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, andin which Figure 1 is a top view of my invention, shown as used with two horses. Fig. 2 is a top view, shown as used with three horses. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
This invention relates to improvements in draft-equalizers; and consists in pivoting the single-trees to the double-trees through the intervention of levers, Which may he allowed to swing back when the device is used with two draft-animals, or may be used to secure the third hitch, when three draft-animals are used.
Referring to the parts of the drawing by lettters, A is the double-tree, formed of an upper bar, A, and a lower parallel bar, A. B B are levers, pivoted at each end of and between the bars A A by bolts b b, and at such point that one pound of power exerted on their longer ends will equal twopounds on their shorter ends. 0 U are the single-trees, pivoted one to the shorter end of each lever B at c.
D D are the traces for the off draft-animal, E E for the near animal, and F F for the central animal, when three are used. Gr represents an ordinary clevis, for central attachment of the double-tree to the work.
The operations may be plainly inferred from more inspection of the drawings, which show plainly at Fig. 2 the manner of attaching the traces, and the position of the parts when three draft-animals are used, and at Fig. 1 illustrate the removal of the central traces, and the position of the parts when but two draftanimals are used.
Having described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, the combination of the levers B with the single-trees G and double-tree A; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The levers B, having draft-hooks on their free ends, and pivoted to the single-trees O O, and between the two parts A A of the double-tree A, the Whole arranged for operation as a two or three horse equalizer, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PRESSON W. THOMSON.
