f In object of the inventionis to provide means in connection with such an apparatus for relatively rotating the work or cutterhead with respect to the grinder-wheel so that thecutting edges Nof the blades ythereof will be accurately ground lto the same angle, thus insuring a smooth cutof the cutter-head when in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for grinding the blades of cutter-heads of the type shown in Patent #1,432,792, granted to F. Schimmel, said apparatus having means adapted to engage the radial wall of one of the guide channels therein to accurately guide androtatethecutter-head `with respect tothegrinder-Wheel, asthe cutter-head is longitudinally moved back and forth with one of its-blades in grinding engagement with the grinder wheel, thus insuring that each blade of a cutter-head will be ground to exactly the same cutting angle. K r v A further object is to provide a guide for thev cutter-head having an adjustable Support whereby it may readily and quickly be adjusted to guide'either a right or a left hand spiral cutter. Y
Features of the invention reside in thegeneral mountingof the guide means for guiding the cutter-head with respect to the periphery of the grinder-Wheel; the. adjustability of such guide means; the particular mounting of the grinder-wheelwhich is such that the wheel may readily and quickly be adjusted to suit various sizes of'cutter heads, and by the adjustment of which Vthe cutting angles of the blades lnay also be varied, as desired, and, in the Vgeneral construction of the grinder, as a whole, which, it will be'seen, is very simple and comprises few moving parts. n y
Other objects of the inventionwill appear from the following description and accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.

Another feature of the guide-head supporting means is shown in Figure 6 and conthe socket 7.3.at an angle in', the supporting member 74 so that the shank 72 o'lthc guide-head may be arranged at a slight incline withrespect 1tothe axis of the stud 7 5. |This is essential iii-order that the straight edge or Jface 64 of the guide-head ed substantially parallel to the cutting-edge of the blade`62 ot the cutterh'ead, during the grinding operation. As a result ot the spiral mounting` of the blade 62 in the cutter-head,`the cutting edges thereof are not parallel to the axis of the cutterhead orl the supporting spindle 24. The axis of the socket 7 3 is therefore arranged at an angle with 'respect to the axis of the extension of the support, so as to compensate for the spiral mounting of' the blades (52 in the cutter-head. The supporting means for the cutter-head is so arranged that it may be used for grinding either right or left hand spiral cutters. T he liull line position shown in Figure G illustrates the guide-head as arranged whcn ,used for guiding right hand spiral cutters, and the dotted line position indicates the position assumed when used to guide left hand spiral cutters. The two above described positions are obtained by merely reversing thefposition of the guide-head supporting means.' That is, when it is desired to adjust the guide-head from the full to the dotted line position shown in Figure 6, the shank 72 will be withdrawn from the socket 73 and the clamping means, including the members 74 and 77, will be rotated a halt revolution in the arm 76, after which the shank 72 will be inserted into the socket 7 3 of the guide-head 7 et. The guide-head will then assume the dotted line position shown in Figure 6. The opposite end portions 83 and 84 of the guide-head are preferably rounded, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, so as to readily enter the channels or grooves GG, during the reciprocal movement et the cutter-head upon the spindle24 when the blades are being ground or sharpened.
Figures l() and 'l1 illustrate a modified form of guide-head wherein a flattened member 85 is secured to the shank 72 and has a iexible or yieldable member 86 secured thereto adapted to engage one side of a tongue or rib 87 provided upon the cutter-head 88. This Jform ot' guide-head functions in a manner similar' to that shown and described in the previous vfigures, but instead of the guide-head having means engageable With the cutter-head blade 62 to retain the guide wall 89 in constant engagement withthe guide-head, the flexible member 86 is provided which, it will be noted by reference to Figures 10 and 1l, is adapted to engage the rear wall of the longitudinal guide rib 87, provided upon this form ot Acutter-head. The opposite end portions of the cutter-head 85 are rounded as shown at 91, and the end portions of the flexible niember 3G are outwardly turned as indicated at 92, so that the rib 87 will readily enter between the guide-head and member' 86, when moving the cutter-head back and forth upon 'the spindle 2l during the grinding operation.
Figure l2 shows another modification oit the guide-head wherein a flexible member 93 is secured to the guide-head 94 on the side adjacent 'to the cutter-head blade 62. 5. ln an apparatus lor grinding spiral eutter heads, each having a plurality ot blades and a guide tongue or rib adjacent to each blade and spaced` therefrom, the combination of a support adapted slidably to receive the cutter head, a. grinding wheel, a cutter guide membei` adapted to engage a radial wall of one of said guide tongues, and a lexible member mounted upon said guide member and adapted to engage the opposite Wall of said guide tongue and cooperating with said guide member to yielda-bly grip said guide tongue and to accurately guide and relatively rotate the cutter head, when said cutter head is axially moved upon said spindle whereby the spiral cutting edge of the blade being ground will be accurately held in grinding contact with the periphery ol the grinding wheel.
6. ln an apparatus for grinding spiral cutters, each comprising a plurality ot cutter blades and having a longitudinally extending guide tongue or rib adjacent to each blade and spaced therefrom, the combination of a base member, a spindle mounted upon said base member and adapted to slidably support the cutter, a bracket on the base member, a grinding wheel adjustably mounted thereon, a guide member adjustably secured to said bracket and adapted to engage a radial wall ot the guide tongue adjacent to the blade being ground, and a flexible member secured to said guide member and engageable with the opposite wall of said tongue and cooperable with said guide member to rotate the cutter, when the latter is longitudinally moved upon said support, to retain the cutting edge ol? the blade being ground in true grinding relation with the periphery of the grinding wheel.

In an apparatus for grinding spiral cutters, each having a plurality of blades and having a guide tongue adjacent to each cutter blade and spaced therefrom, the combination et a spindle having a relatively fixed support and being adapted slidably to support a cutter, a grinding wheel adjustable to and from said spindle, a bracket for supporting said grinding whee-l, an arm adjustable en said bracket, l and a guide means mounted on said arm and including cooperating members adapted to yieldably grip said guide tongue adjacent to the blade being ground, whereby said cutter will be relatively rotated upon said spindle, when longitudinally moved thereon, to accurately guide said cutter with respect to said grinding wheel.
8. ln an apparatus for grinding spiral cutters, each having spiral cutter blades and having a spiral guide means adjacent to each means and to rotate and guide saidcutter with respect to said grinding Wheel, when the cutter-is longitudinally moved upon said spindle, said guide member retaining the cutting edge of the cutter blade being ground, in true grinding relation with respect to the periphery ofV theA grinding wheel, and said flexible member preventing backlash or play of ythe cutter with respect to the grinding wheel.

In an apparatus for grinding spiral eutters,reach having a plurality of spiral blades and a. longitudinally extending guide means adjacent to each blade, the combination of a spindle adapted slidably to support a cutter, agrinding wheel, aysupportfor the grindi ing wheel, a clamping means adjustably secured to said support, a guide member adjustably mounted on said clamping means, a flexible member secured to said guide member and cooperating therewith to engage said guide means and to guide and relatively rotate the cutter, when the latter is axially moved upon said spindle, said guide member being mounted for universal adjustment,
whereby it may be positioned for guiding either right or left hand cutters.

In an apparatus for grinding spiral cutters, each having a plurality of spiral cutter blades and a longitudinally extending guide means adjacent to each blade, the combination of a spindle adapted to slidably support the cutter head to be ground, a grinding wheel, a supporting bracket therefor, a clamping member adjustably mounted on said bracket, a socket in said clamping member, a guide member having a shank adapted to be adjustably secured 1n said socket, said guide member being adapted to engage the guide means in the periphery of said cutter and relatively rotate and guide the cutter on said spindle without back lash, when the cutter is axially moved thereon, and the socket in said clamping member being arranged at an angle with respect to a line drawn at right angles to the axis of said clamping member whereby, when said clamping member is in one position, said guide member may be positioned thereon to guide a right hand spiral cutter, and when said clamping member is inverted with respect to said supporting bracket, said guide member may be positioned to guide a left cutter.
