ASSGNOR OF THIRTY ONE-HUN- Aim THIRTY orin-nninnnnnrns To FRANK B. onLrEonNiA l FLOOR SUPPORTED WALL BED Application led'March 26, 1930. Serial No. $9,015.
This invention relates to. improvements in wall beds of the type arranged to move through a doorway from a closet into a room and vice versa.
-5 An object of the invention is to nrovide a wall bed of the character described which in a particularly eiiicient manner provides for a full and normal opening and closing of a standard'door when the bed is disposed in the room or in the closet and also does not obstruct the doorway. f Another, object is to provide a wall bed of the character described which is so constructed and arranged that it may be easily installed and operated in an ordinary and standard doorway without necessitating changing the construction of the doorway or door or providing a special doorway or door construction or additions thereto or imposing damaging or objectionable strains or stresses on the doorway frame structure or on the door.
Still another object is to provide a wall bed of the character described in which the full weight of the bed is at all times placed on the door, and the wall connection thereof serves only'as a sliding guide and connecting means permitting` movement of the bed as aforesaid, and when desired, the adjustment of the bed to position Alying entirely to one side of the doorway. a
A further object of the invention isto provide a iieor supported. wall connected upendable bed which may be slidably adjustably 5 conneetedwith the wall by means of a small,
compact and simple hinge requiringno change in the construction of the ordinary door jamb in order te be fastened thereto, and a lilrewise-.simple form of truck which at all times during the movement of the bed supports the full weight of the bed and is slidably lioined with the hinge in such manner that the bed and truck may be disposed entirely to one side of and clear of the doorway when the 0 bed is in the room.
Yet another object of my invention is to provide a wall bed of the character described in which the means of connecting the bed with the wall-is entirely concealed when the door is closed with the bed disposed in the closet or storage space therefor, and substantially concealed when the bed is in the room.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the speciication. It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings,
F ignre 1 is a perspective view of the bed of my invention as shown in position of use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the bed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane of line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure i is a top plan view of the bed with parts removed and parts shown in section.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary front elevation of the truck.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fignre 5.
The embodiment of my invention, as particularly shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises an upendable bed frame l supported on a truck 2 of rectangular form and having casters 3 at the four corners thereof. Links l and 5 are pivoted as at 6 and 7 to the side rails S of the bed frame and as at 9` and 10 to spaced points of the truck. Counterbalancing springs 11 are connected with a cross member 13 of the bed frame and with a similar member 12 of the truck. With this arrangement of links and springs, the bed frame maybe readily and easily moved from horizontal position of use into vertical or npended position and vice versa.
The truck 2 is arranged to be adjustably and slidably connected with a wall in such manner that it and the bed may be moved and guided through an opening in the wall to position on either side of the wall. As here shown the bed structure is installed in an ordinary door way 16 and a connection is made between the truck and a single point on the jamb 17 of the doorway. This con-- "nection may be made with a simple hinge comprising a small, relatively thin leaf 18 secured by screws 19 to said jamb, and a movable leaf 20 of an L shape. The movable leaf is arranged to be swung through the doorway tolie on either side of the wall and will come to rest substantially parallel with the wall owing to the L shape thereof.
The sliding connection between the truck and hinge is made with a U shaped collar or sleeve 21 fixed to the hinge leaf 20 andemv bracing a cylindrical cross rod or bar. 22 on the truck. VIn this connection it is to be noted that the truck has posts 23 thereon arranged to support between them the rod 22 and alsov to support the bed head piece 24 which is fixed thereto. The U shaped collar is secured to the hinge leaf by bolts 25 which extend across and'close thelower open side of the collar, there being tubular spacers 26 on said bolts which spacers abut 'the opposed sides ofthe collar. The function of the collar or sleeve 21 is to slidably guide the truck and secure the saine to the wall.v The .weight'of the truck is borne solely `by the floor and the full weight of the bed is borne by the truck. Thus it will be seen that the ineansfof connection between the truck Aand door j amb may be comparativelysmall, light .and of simple construction and fastened at a single point to the j'amb by screws or the like.
It is important to note that with the bed of ymy invention arranged to slide laterally when disposed in the room, the bed may be disposed in various positions to suit the user and in consideration of the arrangement of other pieces of furniture in the room. It may be l moved close to or away from a near-by window, asl desired7 and in having a range of adjustment substantially equal to its ,width may be disposed in many different positions. Chief among the advantages provided by my bed is the fact that the bed may be entirely disposed in laterally spaced relation to the side of the doorway to which it is sen cured Vwhen' disposed'in the room whereby the 'door may be fully closed.
vOwing to the construction and arrangement of the hinge means, no part of the wall Vconnection ofthe bed is visible when the bedf is in the closet andthe door is closed and furthermore the said wall connection is vsubstantially concealedwhen the bed is disposed inthe room.'
Instead'of'a bed frame the'means of my invention may be efectively used with other obwhich it is desired to move through a wall opening from position of concealment or noniise into position of use, and vice versa.
I claim: l
-1. In a wall bed, a floor supported wheeled truckarranged tol be rolled through a doorway from a storage space into a room and vice yects, devices, articles of furniture, et cetera,
versa, a hinge arranged to be fixed to the j amb of the doorway opposed to the jamb to which ythe door is hung and having a portion arranged to move through the doorway from said space into said room and vice versa, an upendable bed fram-e. carried by and movable withsaid truck, and means ofsliding and guiding connection between the hinge and truck providing for disposition of the entire `trucky and bed frame unit at a point clear of the path of the door when the bed is in said room.
2. `In a wall bed, a hinge comprising an immovable leaf larrangedto be iiXed to a j amb of a doorway, and a movable leaf arranged to be swung through a doorway froma position lying within a storage space to a position lying within a room and vice versa, a floor supported truck arranged to be moved through said doorway, a bed frame carried and supported entirely by the truck, and a sleeve member fixed to said movable hinge leaf and slidably embracing. a part of said truck.
3. In a wall bed, al hinge comprising animmovable leaf arranged ,to be xedto ajamb of a doorway and a movable substantially L shaped leaf arranged to be'swung through a doorway from a position `lying within a storage space to a` position llying within a room and vice versa, a wheeled truck at alltiines entirely supportedby the floor and arranged to be moved through the doorwaya bed frame carried by the truck, a rod extending horizonytally across said truck, and a sleeve fixed to said movable leaf and slidably embracing said rod, said truck and bed being disposable entirely to one side of the said amb and doorway when the bedis disposed lin the room whereby the Vdoorv for said doorwaymay be closed. Y Y
4. In a wall bed, a wheeled truck at all tii es supported by the oor and arranged to be moved through a doorway into and out of a room, a bed frame carried by the truck, and
vhinge means fixed-directly to a point of'a jamb of thedoorway and slidably connected with the truck in such manner thaty the latter yand bed may be disposed clear ofthe path of and will permit of closing of a swinging door for said doorway when the bed is in the room.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto Vset my hand at Oakland, California, this 18th day of March, 1930. i
