a provide means for tying an ordinary bag to Patented Dec. 1, 1931" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VACUUM CLEANER BAG Application filed April 28, 1930. Serial No. 448,150.
This invention relates to vacuum cleaners such asare used for household purposes and more particularly to the means of emptying the dust bag without having the dust and dirt blow in all directions. I
The principal object of the invention is to a vacuum cleaner bag so that the contents of the vacuum cleaner bag could be confined While emptying the said contents into the ordinary bag. v
Another object of the invention isto provide a nipple having clamping means for clamping the end of the vacuum cleaner bag and an ordinary bag tothe opposite ends thereof so that the dust and dirt from the vacuum cleaner bag could be confined when emptying the contents of the vacuum cleaner bag into an ordinary paper bag.
Another object of the invention is to provide resilient means for clamping the bags in place andmeans for chaining the clamps to the body of the nipple so they will not be separated or lost.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the disclosure progresses. The drawings are intended to merely indicate a posslbleembodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the actual needs of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes. It is therefore not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated but rather to define such limits in the appended claims. For a more general understanding of the invention attention is now called to the draw: ings. In these drawings like parts are indicated by like reference characters throughout the specification.
Figure 1 is a view of the device showing the method of emptying the contents of the vacuum cleaner bag into an ordinary paper bag.
Figure 2 is a view of the nipple.
Figure 3 is a top view thereof.
Figure 4 is another view of the nipple with the vacuum cleaner bag and paper bag attached thereto.
Figure 5 is a section on ure 2. 1 o
Referrin now to the drawings in detail line 5 -5 of Fignumeral 1 esignates the nipple, 2 the vacuum cleaner bag and 3a paper bag. The nipple comprises a cylindrical body portion 4 having'flanges 5 and 6 at the top and bottom. Adjoining these flanges are clamps 7 and 8 for clamping the bags to the nipple."
The clamps are made in two halves 9 and 10 and hinged as at 11. The ends of the clamps are provided With outwardly bent flanges 12 and 13 to which are attached.
springs 14 and 15 for resiliently holding the clamps in place. The flanges 12 are provided with slots 16 in which latches the clips 17 fastened to one end of the springs. When removing the clamps 7 and 8 the clips 17 are manually taken from the slots and the two halves of the clamp will open up. Nu-
meral 18 designates a chain fastened at the ends to the clamps 7 and 8 and at the center to the nipple, Thus when the two clamps are opened up there .will be no danger of losingthem. I V The purpose of providing the flanges 5 and 6 at the ends of thef'nipple is to prevent bags from being pulled accidentally from the nipple. In Figure 4 it will be seen how the clamps cause-the necks of the bags to bend around the flanges and thereby tend to keep the bags more firmly in place.
In practice when the vacuum cleaner bag 2 is filled it is removed from the cleaner and attached to one end of the nipple. A paper bag is fastened to the opposite end of the nipple as shown in Figure 1. The vacuum cleaner bag is then shaken until all the dust and dirt will fall into the paper bag.
It is thus seen that I have provided a sanitary, simple and inexpensive means of getting rid of the dust anddirt. The dust and dirt is confined so that there is no chance of it blowing around. The paper bag can then be burned u or otherwise removed.
Having thus claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a cylindrical member, of a pair of hinged clam s near the ends for 'pping the necks of ags around the en s of the cylindrical member, means for holding said clamps resiliently around said cylindrical member, flanges at both ends of said cylinescribed my invention, 1
drical member, and a chain for connecting said clamps to said cylindrical member.
' 2. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a cylindrical member of a pair of hinged clamps near the en s for gripping thmecks of bags around the ends cal member.
of the cylindrical member, means for holdin said clamps resiliently around said cylindrlcal member, flanges at both ends of said cylindrical member, and a chain for chaining said clamps to said cylindrical member.
3. In a device of the class described in combination, a, cylindrical member haying-flanges at the ends, a set of hinged clamps adjacent said flanges, the ends of saidclamps having outwardly bent portions, tension springs, one end of said tension springs attached to one set of said outwardly bent portions, the other end of said springs having attached thereto a latch which fits into a slot in the other of said outwardly bent ortions, and achain for chaining the said 0 amps'to said cylindriv In testimony whereof I affix m signature.
