Description

UNITED STATES JOHN E. TABER, OF FALL PATENT OFFICE.
RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HO SE-SPANNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,344, dated October 17, 1876; application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. TABER, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Spanner, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved spanner, with a portion broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a spanner having the end that embraces the hose-coupling enlarged and provided with-a groove that is of suflicient width to take in the lug-pin on the coupling, and of sufficient length at each side of the center line of the handle to insure a good bearing on the surface of the coupling, and to cause the spanner to draw laterally on the'lng-pin when the spanner is applied to the coupling. Apertures are cut in the sides of the groove thus formed for permitting the escape of snow or mud.
The object of the invention is to provide a spanner that cannot become clogged or stopped by snow or mud, so that it becomes useless, and that also may be reversed without removing it from the coupling.
Referring to the drawing, A is thehandle of the spanner, having the enlarged end B, which is formed to fit the curvature of the outside of the coupling, and is provided with a slot, 0, that is of sufficient width to embrace the lug-pin of the hose-coupling, and is of such length as to extend over about one-fourth of the circumference ofthe coupling. Apertures a are formed in the sides and ends of the slot,
larged end B formed to fit the curvature of the coupling, and provided with the slot 0 and apertures a, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
