This invention relates to improvements in pedestal lamps (either floor or table) of the indirect lighting type, having for an object to provide a novel construction and assembly of multiple lamp supporting units, whereby the reflector bowl contained lamp and the side or exterior lamps may be quickly and conveniently electrically wired and supported upon the lamp pedestal or stand; furthermore, to permit of the rapid and etlicient assembly of the component parts of the lamp supporting construction, as well as the lamps, and consequently thereupon, to materially reduce time and labor overhead incident to assembling operations.
Anotherand equally important object of the invent-ion may be stated to reside in the provision of a lamp supporting unit, so constructed and designed as to reduce the number of working parts thereof to minimum and to afford not only a means of rigid and stable support for the external or side lamps, but also, a means for housing and protecting the electrical wiring leading from the power supply wires in the pedestal or stand to the lamp bracket fixtures, the unit being constructed of two companionate pieces or sections adapted to be inter-engaged and interconnected when assembled.
It is also amongst the principal desideratum of the invention to provide a device of the character mentioned wherein the separable parts of the external lamp support are locked in assembled relation by a dual utility element, to wit, a locking means or nut formed with a cupped extension which, with locking engagement, is securely positioned in superposed relation to said external lamp support and affords a bracket for receiving and {irmly supporting the indirect lighting or reflecting bowl and for housing the reflector bowl electric lamp bracket fixture.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be understood by those skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying dra-wings and in the detailed description based 1930. Serial No. 444,900.

Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, I have shown my invention as being adapted to that type of lamp generally identied in the art as an indirect lighting lamp (of either the floor or table types) wherein the construction includes a pedestal or stand 1, preferably formed of hollow material or tubing, asis well known in the art. which pedestal receives upon its upper end, a fitting 2 provided with a screw threaded nipple 8, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
To support the side or external lamps of 95 the construction with relation to the pedestal or stand l, i. e.. the usual candle simulating lamps. I provide a two-pieced supporting unit. the pieces or sections of which are complementally shaped to permit of matched as- 10 sembly of the same. The sections of this supporting unit are designated, for convenience,
. by the numerals 4 and 5.
The section 4 comprises a cup-like central body portion 6 formed with an internally screw threaded opening and a multiplicity of integral radially disposed curved ybracket arms 7, the outer extremities of which, if desired, may be cupped as indicated at 8.
The section 5 of they supporting unit, comprises a central body portion 9 of inverted cup-like formation, corresponding somewhat to the cupped formation of the portion 6 of the section 4 and adapted to normally overlie the same, while integral with this central body portion 9 are a plurality of radially disposed curved bracket arms 10, these latter arms corresponding in curvature to the arms 7 of the section 4, whereby with assembly of said sections said arms 10 will approximately parallel the arms 7. Upon the outer extremities of each of the arms 10, apertured rounded extensions 11 are Jformed and, as shown in the Figure 4, these extensions are adapted to have overlying or overlapping arrangement with respect to the adjacent ends 8 of the arms 7. At this point, it will be noted that the cross sectional shape of the arms 10 is substantially rectangular, though this shape may be varied, such as conditions or preference may dictate, while upon the lower or normally inner faces of each of said arms 10 and upon the lower or normally inner face of each of the extensions 11 thereof, abutment flanges 12 are integrally formed and are adapted to have overlapping or telescopic engagement with the adjacent marginal portions of those particular arms 7 and extension 8 receiving the same, this engagement being well illustrated in the Figures 4 and 5, and obviously, affording a means of positive interconnection as between the sections 4 and 5 when in assembled relation.
Cupped fixtures or brackets 13 are provided each of the extremities 11 of the arms 10 and as will be noted upon the accompanying drawings, each of the brackets 13 are formed with reduced screw threaded nipples 14 adapted to be turned into engagement with complementally screw threaded openings formed in the intermediate portions of said extensions 11, hence, permitting of the fixed mounting of the brakets 13 upon the outer extremities of each of the arms 10 and directly above the outer extremities of their companionate arms 7. In order that the section 10 of the supporting unit will be fixedly secured to and mounted upon the fixture 2 of the lamp pedestal 1, the screw threaded nipple 3 of said fixture 2 is turned into engagement with the screw threaded opening formed in the central or body portion 6 of said fixture, as is shown in the Figure 4 and inasmuch as this nipple 3 is of a length greater than the thickness of said section wall, the inner end of the same will be extended within the cupped body portion, whereby to permit of the screw threaded engagement of a. locking nut or so-called hickey 17 therewith, the opposite end of which is adapted to have a screw threaded nipple or formed with a cup-like upper portion 20 hav- 90 ing an upstanding integral collar 21 upon its upper marginal portion, the arrangement or placement of which upon said marginal portion is such as to provide the same with an internal annular shoulder 14, theutility of which will be presently described; said collar 21 being preferably formed with a plurality of relatively spaced screw threaded openings adapted to receive locking or set screws 23 therein.
Mounted within the cupped portion 20 is an incandescent lamp receiving bracket fixture 24 equipped with the usual pull chain switch, the chain 25 of which is received through away or opening 26 formed in an adjacent portion of the cup 20 whereby to permit of access thereto. An electric incandescent lamp 27, ef the desired wattage, is adapted to be engaged within the fixture 24.
As a means for the indirect projection of light rays emitted from the lamp 27 with energization of its filament, I provide the lamp construction with a bowl shaped reflector 28, forming the lower portion thereoiwith a constricted or neck part 29 having a cross sectionally curved annular flange 30 formed thereupon and inset'lwith respectto the adljacent end of said neck whereby to provide the same with anannular shoulder 31. This constricted or neck portion 29 of the bowlr shaped reflector 28 is adapted to be engaged in the annular collar 21- carried upon the upper or marginal portion of the cupped shaped extension 20, that is, the inset annular flange 30 of this neck portion 29 of the reflector is l lixed positioning of the reflector upon the cupped element 20 is effected by the turning of the locking or set screws 23 into engage-` ment with the adjacent surfaces of the `said flange 30. Inasmuch as the upper end of the bowl shaped reflector 28 is open, it will be seen that light rays emitted from the incandescent lamp 27 therewithin will be projected from said lamp onto the reflecting surface of said reflector and thence, reflected upwardly and outwardly with respect to the open end of the bowl for flood illumination of that space above the same, to wit, for effecting the flood illumination of the ceiling of a room in which the lamp is arranged. f
If desired, the bowl shaped reflector 28 may be provided with a suitable shade, such as indicated by the numeral 32, the upper portion of which is provided with a wire frame 33 carrying a second and smaller annular wire frame 34 adapted to be loosely seated upon the shouldered flange 35 provided therefor within or upon the normally upper end of the Areflector 28. However, it is of course to be understood that the construction may be v used either with or without the shade 32,

In electrically wiring a lamp equipped with nthe invention, current supply conductors or wires 36 are threaded -through the hollow pedestal 31 into the chamber provided for by the relatively superposed sections 4 and 5 of the supporting unit. whereupon branch electrical conductors indicated by the numeral 37 are tapped from said conductors 36 and are extended through the ways therefor provided,.as between the arms 7 and 10 into electrical connection with the terminals of the electric lamp bracket fixtures supported within the sleeves 15, while other conductors 38 are electrically connected to the conductors 36 and are threaded upwardly through the nipple or coupling 18 into electrical engagement with the contact terminals of the electric lamp fixture 24 supported within the cup portion 20. To control. selectively, the passage of electricity to the lamps 16 and to the lamp 27, it, of course. will be understood, that separate switches may be provided. As
shown in connection with the lamp 27, the supply of electrical energy to this lamp is selectively controlled by actuation of its circuit closing device through the ypull chain 25, while to effect collective energizat-ion of the side or external lamps 16, I may mount upon one side wall of the cupped central body portion 6` of the section 4, a suitable rotatable switch. indicated in its entirety by the numeral 39, extending electrical conductors 40 into engagement with the terminals of said switch and so arranging these conductors with respect to the conductors 36 and 37. as to permit of the closing of an electrical circuit through the latter. at will of a' user; it being noted in this connection, that the said switch neck portion, which neck portion is snugly engaged and passed through an opening provided therefor in an appropriate portion of the side wall of the cupped central portion 6, whereupon locking nuts are engaged with the switch and with the cupped portion 6 to insure the fixed positioning with respect to the Section 4. Also, a suitable knob, finger piece or the like, is indicated by the numeral 41, and preferably provided upon the switch so as to permit of convenient rotation of the circuit closing element for making and breaking circuit, as may be required. However, if desired, instead of providing a switch for collectively energizing the side or external lamp 16, it is of course to be understood that these lamps may be individually or selectively energized by providing each of the same with a suitable form of circuit closing element or switch, as for example, a switch of the pull cha-in type. as is illustrated in connection with the lamp 27, or any other approved style, as may be desired.
y From the foregoing. it will be understood from workers skilled in this art. that I have provided a lamp supporting unitof such construction as will permit of its production at absolutely minimum costs and furthermore, because of that construction, will enable a worker to effect assembling of the same in a lamp construction with but a minimum amount of labor and. time. In assembling the improved supporting unit, the section 4 is engaged with the screw threaded portion of the fixture 2, as hereinbefore described, whereupon the electrical wires to be employed for effecting the supply of electrical energy to the lamps may be installed and connected, as may the switch 39, when this particular type of circuit closer is used. At this time, and assuming that the hickey 17 has, been engaged with the extension 3 and that the nipple or coupling 18 has been engaged in the opposite screw threaded end of the hickey. the companionate section 5 of the unit :is placed in position. -whereupon the upper extremity of said coupling 18 will be engaged through the opening in its cupped central body portion 9. whereas the arms 1() of this section 5 will be matched with and arranged in proximity7 to the arms 7 of the body portion 6 of the section 4. Immediately prior to the interfengaging or matching of the sections 4 and 5, it is to be understood that the conductors 37 leading to the side lamps 16 are extended lthrough or along their respective arms 7 and 10 and that these conductors are electrically connected to the contact terminals of the elect-ric lamp fixturesl provided the lamps 16. 'ith the wiring so arranged,
the sections 4 and 5 may be then finally interengaged by forcing the section 5 downwardly with respect to the section 4, thereby causing the abutment flanges 12 to have overlapping 39 is-preferab1yof that type provided with a engagement in the adjacent portions of the arms I and their respective extensions 8, as is illustrated in the Figures 4 and 5. At this time, the locking nut 19 with its cupped portion 20 is turned into engagement with the screw threaded portion of the coupling 18 extended above the cupped central body portion 9 of the section 5 and by reason of such engagement, the section 5 will be forced downwardly into positive contact with the adjacent portions of the section el, including the body section 6 with its bracket arms 7. Thus, it will be seen that a positive closing or interengagement with the sections 4 and 5 will be effected and consequently upon this,
the electrical wiring within the relatively opposed central body portions 6 and 9 and the bracket arms 7 and l0 will be effectually housed and protected and protected. aswell as shielded from view. Following the screw threaded engagement of the nut 19 with the upper end of the coupling 18, the incandescent electric lamp fixture 24 may be engaged with the remaining extremity of the coupling and at this time, the constricted or neck portion 29 of the bowl shaped reflector 28 is engaged upon the cup element 20, in the manner a hereinbefore stated, following which the in- Attention is invited to'the fact that in effecting the assembling and interconnection between the sections 4 and 5 of the supporting unit, but a single locking operation is re quired, to wit, the turning of the locking nut 19 with its cupped element 2O into engagement with the screw threaded upper extremity of the coupling 18 and furthermore,
it is to be noted that concurrently with this locking engagement, the cup element 20 will be properly positioned for receiving and housing the electric lamp fixture 24 and for receiving the bowl shaped reiector 28. Thus, labor costs as well as time costs in assembling a lamp including my improved supporting unit will be reduced to minimum and that 'm addition to this, the resulting construction will be of rugged and durable character capable of providing a rigid and firm support for both the side or external lamps of indirect lighting lamps as well as forgthe bowl shaped reflector contained incandescent electric lamps.
While I have described with some degree of particularity, my improved lamp supporting unit as being used in connection with an indirect lighting lamp, it is of course to be understood that the invention may be as well adapted for usage upon other types of floor and table lamps aswell, and in such instances of adaption, the locking nut 19 with its cupped element 20 would be replaced by 'an ordinary locking nut which, if desired, might be provided with an ornamental top portion.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification-and such candescent lamp 27 is engaged in the fixture' of complemental sections, adapted to be engaged, one with the other, in matched relation', one of said sections having supporting engagement with alamp pedestal and having ways formed therein for receiving and housing electrical wiring, a locking means engageable with a portion of said pedestal having bearing engagement upon the uppermost of said sections for clampingly interconnecting the same, and a cup-like extension carried by said locking means adapted to receive and support therein and thereupon other elements of the lamp construction.
2. A support-ing bracket assembly for lamp constructions, comprising complementally formed sections, each including relatively opposed cupped like body portions, radially disposed arms extended from each of said body portions, the arms of one of said sections being formed with longitudinal'ways throughout their respective lengths, the arms of the remaining section being adapted to be engaged with the arms of said first section for closing the longitudinal ways therein, lamp bracket fixture receiving and supporting means carried upon the extremities of the arms of the second mentioned section and locking means adapted to engage with a por,- tion of a lamp construction and to have bearing engagement upon one of said sections for clampingly interconnecting the same, said locking` means being formed with a cupped bracketextension for receiving and supporting therein and thereupon other elements of the lamp construction.
3. A lamp bracket comprising cupped relatively opposed and interengaged sections, each of said sections having a plurality of complementally disposed armsV extending therefrom, the arms of one of said sections having longitudinal ways disposed throughout the same, the inner ends of which communicate with the interior of their cupped section, and the arms of Athe remaining sec tion overlying and closing said ways throughout their lengths, and lamp fixture means on the outer ends of the arms of said remaining section. 4. A lamp bracket comprising relatively opposed and interengaged cupped sections,
outer ends of said arms of the remaining sect1on arranged directly over and 1n communlcation with the adjacent ends of the ways of the rst mentioned arms.
5. A lamp bracket comprising a plurality of relatively opposed and normally interengaged cupped sections, each of said sections having a plurality of complementally disposed arms extending therefrom, the arms of one of said sections having enlarged cup s like portions upon their free extremities and said arms also being formed with Ways ex, tending longitudinally throughout their respective lengths and communicating at their outer-ends with said enlarged cup like portions and at their inner ends with the interior of their particular section, and the arms ofV the remaining sections overlying and closing said ways throughout their lengths, and lamp lixture means on the outer ends of the arms of said remaining section adjacent said enlarged cupped portions; I Y
6. A lamp bracket comprising relatively opposed and interengaged sections, onefof whichis provided with an intermediately disposed cupped portion, each of said sections having a plurality of complementally disposed arms extending therefrom the arms of one of said sections having longitudinally disposed ways throughout the same, the inner ends of which communicate with the in# terior of said cupped portion, the remaining section and its arms overlying and closing said cupped portion and said ways throughout their lengths, and lamp xtu're means on the outer ends of the arms of said remaining section.
