Description

E. C. KNUTH.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
Patented Oct. 3,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD G. KNUTH, OF CHIOAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREE-HOOKS.
Specificatien forming part of Lietters Patent No. 182,936, dated October 3, 1876; application filed Match 23, 1876.
T0 all whom zt may concem Be it known that I, EDWARD CHARLES KNUTH, of the city of Ohicago, county of (look, and State of Illincis, have invented certain improvements in an article called or known as a Whiffletree or Strap Bock, and expressed in the accompanying drawings, to which I refer.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved hook. Fig. 2 isa longitudin al section, showin g the parts altogether in working order. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, representing only the hooks body.
My invention relates to a bock used and known as whiffletree or as a strap hook, of common shape, and made of brass or iron. The rounded front part A is bent forward, down, and p in a swift retnrn curve, ending in the resemblance of hook-shaped form, as shown in the drawings. This shape offers a convenient space for the free playing of attached rings, chains, straps, ropes, &c., as it may require. The remaining part of the hooks body is flattened ont, terminating to a round or oblong shaped eyelet, B, for a chain or a strap to run it throngh for fastening. Near this eyelet on the flat surface the hooks body carries two projecti1ig lugs or joints, et a, in combination with a vertical and round-shaped guide-plug, I). The tongne 0 is hinged at its base between the lngs a a, while the front end fis properly fitting in a recess, g, underneath the hooks end, and provided on its center line with an oval-shaped openingor hole, 0, in which the guide-plng bis lodging. On said guideplng 12 is loosely slipped a fitting spiral spring, (1, With a washer on its top to keep the ton gues hole free from entanglement With the spring. The tongne itself acts as a spring by the aid of the spiral spring underneath. When compressed and relieved, il; finds its way up, securely guided and supported, to the recess in its resting position, preventing thereby the attached ring, chain, strap, &c., from getting out of its playway on the hook. When pressed down in the position at 0, as shown by dotted lines, till it comes in contact with the hooks body at the tapered end ot said tongne runs out in the continuation of the hooks bent form, preventing thereby any interference or molesting interruption by hooking or nnhook- 1ng.
Having thus described my invention, what I clainn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the hook, provided With a stnd, b, the pivoted tongue C, having a slot, 0, to receive the stud b, and the spiral spring d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the stud b on the body of the book, the pivoted slotted tongue O, spiral spring (1, and washer, placed on the stud between the spring and the tongue, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWABD O. KNUTH. Witnesses:
