ous constructions have been-proposed and used for doing this. x In the large multi-unit machines, however, where a large number of printing units are employed, theavailable'pressroom space necessitates that these units be placed as closely together as .possible, so that the space avail able lengthwise of the press mechanism for I supporting the web rolls is restricted, so that the usual construction employed for supporting the running and spare web'rolls are impractical, because of the size and space necessary to operate them. I 725 I It is the special object of the present invention to provide a supporting mechanism in which a running web roll and a spare web roll may be supported so that the spare web roll may be readily loaded into the support and moved to running and pasting positions, the mechanism and the web rolls being so arrangedthat they. may be positioned in the restricted space available in multi-unit machines, where the printing units are arranged closely together.- 7
A further object of the invention is to providev an improved web ,rollsupporting and changing mechanism of simple form and which can be readily manipulated to move the spare roll from loading to running and pasting position, the parts being so arranged that as the spare roll support moves to running position, the expired roll is moved to dischargto ing position onto a position in which a. new web roll may be loaded into the support.
' With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations, which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the 1929; Serial No. 355,707.

Referring now to these drawings, the invention generally includes a construction in which there is a movable support capacitated to rotatably support a running web roll and a spare web roll, together with means for operating the support to effect a vertical movement of the web rolls to and'from running position, so that the rolls may be positioned in a restricted space, the expired roll moving out of running position with a vertical movement as the spare roll moves into running position.
The specific mechanism by which this arrangement of the support and rolls is efi'ected may be varied to a certain extent, but that shown is a convenient way and will be described as illustrative of the invention. As shown, the support is mounted on a suitable base 1 from which rise webs 2 which support an outer frame 3 to which is bolted, as by bolts I, an inner frame 5, this construction forming a rigid support for carrying the roll supporting mechanism hereinafter referred This roll supporting mechanism, in the construction shown, comprises a pair of spaced heads, indicated generally by the numeral 6, these being duplicated on each side of the machine. These heads are supported on each side of the machine in traveling carriers 7. Each carrier 7 at its lower end,
passes over a sprocket 8 mounted on a short shaft 9 rotatable in bearings 10 supported in said frames 3, 5. At their upper ends each chain carrier passes over a sprocket 11 on a shaft 12 mounted in said frames 3, 5. One of these sprockets. as 11, in the construction shown, is a driven sprocket, being driven from a driving shaft 13 operated by any suitable source of power, not shown. This shaft 13 drives a gear 14 on the end of the shaft 12, this gear 14 and the shaft 13 being located outside the outer frame 3. The heads 6 may be secured to the chains in any suitable manner, as by bolts 15, and these heads act to carry the roll supporting means which are shown in the form of cones 16 which enter the ends of the cores 17 of the rolls.
In the best constructions, guides are provided for guiding the heads as they are car-- rled around the frames by the chains. While these guiding means may differ somewhat in construction, as illustrated the heads are provided with upper and lower rolls 18, 19 which bear against a track on the inside face of frame 5. These rolls also act, in effect, as a thrust bearing for the heads, for purposes hereinafter referred to.
As shown, the sprockets are so proportioned that when the running roll has been reduced to about the expiration point, it will pass the new roll, as the new roll moves from theloading position of Figure 1 to the pasting position of Figure 2. With the construction described, therefore, it will be seen that the running and spare rolls may be supported in a very narrow space, considered widthwise of the press, and the new or spare roll can be moved to running position without interfering with the removal of the expiring roll, and a compact structure thus is obtained.
Preferably, means will be provided by which the roll support considered as a whole may be adjusted widthwise of the machine, such, for instance. as by means of a shaft 20 screw threaded into a block 21 depending from the base 1, before referred to, the base 1 having asliding movement in beveled tracks 22 formed on a support below the base, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Preferably, also, mechanism will be pro Vided whereby the spindles 23, which carry the cones 16 in the heads 6, may be adjusted laterally for web ositioning, such means ineluding hand, a justing devices, such as wheels 24, 25 by which quick and fine adjustment of the spindles may be effected, and means are also provided, such as a button latch 26, indicated in Figures 4 and 5, for holding the spindle in adjusted position.
,.The 0 ration of the mechanism is believed to e clear from the foregoing descriptlon, but it may be briefly rccapitulated as follows: In Figure 1. the running roll R is shown in the upper running position, and
the spare roll S is shown in the lower loading position; in Figure 2, the running roll is shown as about to expire and the support has been moved to lower the running roll from the upper position of Figure 1 toward its discharging and reloading position. The downward movement of the roll R takes place as the roll S moves upwardly. As the roll S moves upwardly to the position shown in Figure 2, it comes in contact with the running web W and the web can then be pasted to the web of the s are roll, and the old web then broken. A urther movement of the support brings the spare roll S into the running position shown in Figure 1, and it then becomes the runnin web, and the ex ired roll is moved to the Fower position of igure 2, so that a new spare roll can be loaded into the support now in such lower loading position.
While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific construction shown and described without departin from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a web roll support for supporting web rolls as they are fed to the printin machine, the combmation of a pair of verticall arranged traveling carriers provided with supporting means engaging in the ends of a web roll in an upper runnin position and a spare roll in a lower loa in position, means for driving the carriers %0 effect a movement of the web rolls to and from the loading position, means for effecting lateral adjustment of the carriers, means for effecting lateral adjustment of the roll supporting means independently of the carriers and means for limiting the endwise movement of the roll engaging devices to keep the web rolls centered in the carriers.
2. In a web roll support, the combination of a pairof vertically arranged chains, heads carried by the chains, spindles carried by the heads engaging in the ends of a runnin web roll and a spare web roll, means for driving the chains, and means for preventing endwise movement of the spindles.
3. In a web roll support, the combination of a pair of vertically arranged chains, framing in which the chains are supported, heads carried by the chains, spindles carried by the heads engaging in the ends of a running web roll and a spare web roll, means for driving the chains, and rolls carried by the heads and engaging the framing for preventing endwise movement of the spindles.
4. In a web roll support, the combination of a pair of vertically arranged chains, frammg in which the chains are mounted, heads carried by the chains, spindles carried by the heads engaging in the ends of a running web roll and a spare web roll, means for driving the chains, means for effecting an end- Wise movement of the spindles independently of the chains, and means carried by the heads and engaging the framing for preventing endwise movement of the spindles.
