ugal driers', such as machines for drying laundry,*of the type having a rotating basket or receptacle and a cover over the open end 1 a The present invention relates more particularly to a safety device for preventlng the power from beingllthrownbnto the basket whenthe coveriis' in open condition, and for preventing the'cover from being opened while thebasket is being driven; Thus, injury to the person or persons operating the machine is effectively guarded against, a feature of considerable importance as 'notin frequently c machines of this type are operated by inexapplication of :the invention clear perienced persons knowing little'or nothing about machinery. it i Theaim of the invention-is to provide an improved safety device of thissort which is #1 very simple in construction, which is very 'efi'ectlve m; operation,
; which may be easily'an d quicklyoperated. i f 1 7 Otherlobjects will be in part obvious and in part pointed. out hereinafter "more in detail.
The invention accordingly 1 consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the constructionhereinafter set forth and the scope o'f the application of which will-beindicated" in the appended *claimsrm-w l In-thesaccompanying-drawings, wherein we have shown, for illustrative purposes, one of the embodiments which the present invention maytaker J V "LFigure 1 is a vertical central view through the upper end of a centrifugal extractor, this View being-takensubstantially on line l lof Fig. 2 andshowing the coverin closed and locked condition; r: i g V Fig, 2lisa topiplan View showing 'the safety device; in locking condition, so much of the extractonbeing illustrated as will make one -Fig. 3,"s a view similar. to Fig. 2, but ing the safety dition 'f 1,5 a -,Fig flisa t sideelevational view "of the safety. mechanism in; locked condition, 7 as showninqliiglhflyand I it show- 7 stud 21 journalled in the drain board and -mechanism' in unlocked conon line 5+5of Fig.2-. I y
Referring-to the drawings indetail, the centrifugal. extractor therein shown is dis w Fig; 5 is a detail'viewtaken substantially closed by way ofillustration andmore or less diagrammatically,-as the specific construction thereof maybe varied as desired." The basket; or receptacle of this extractor maybe driven in any suitablemanner, the driving mechanism not being illustrated, as machines drawings, the letter A; designates the rotatable receptacle which, in the present instance', "is in the form of an imperforate basket having, adjacent its upper end, openings 10 through which the water is adapted of this type are old and well-known. In these to be discharged into an annular channel s as is usual in centrifugal *driers of thissort.
The numeral 20] designatesf'a control: lever for controlling the mechanism'through which leverQO is fixed to' 'the upper end ofa pin or carrying, on its lower end, aca-m plate 22 which is adapted tobe connected by a rod or other suitable arrangement to the driving mechanism, the rod not being shown, 1 It is evident that theconnection between the member 22 and thedriving mechanism may be of any suitable sort; for example, in the event that the receptacle A is driven through a clutch having a shiftable sleeve, the member 22 will beassoci'ated withthe sleeve in such manner that, when the lever 20 is in the positionshown in Figs. 1 and 2, the sleeve isengaged so that the receptacleis driven. When the lever 20 is in the'position shown in Fig. 3, the clutch isdisengaged sothatthe power is thrown off of the receptacle A. It may further bementioned' that, as 'is usual 1n machines ofthissort, a brake (not sh'own) the centrifugal receptacleA is driven i This til is provided for quickly stopping the receptacle when the power is thrown off. 7 I
J ournalled in the drain board along side of the stud 21 is a stud 25 to the'upper end of which is fixed a cover locking member26. The cover D maybe provided with a looking or strike plate 27. The locking member 26,
when in locking position, as shown in Figs.
1 and 2, is adapted to overlie the pl'ate 27.
The corner 28 of the strike plate'and' the forward edge 29 of the locking member 26 are preferably round'so that thelocking mem- Mounted on. the stud'25 for turning'movement relative thereto is alever 36 -which is controlled by the cover- D and which serves to automatically lock the control lever. 20 against actuation when the cover is open. One end 37 ofthis lock or lever 36 is adapted to cooperate with an abutment or tooth38 on the control lever when the'cover is open, as shown in Fig. 3.- The. other endofthe con- .trol lever lock 36 has an i-nclinedor cam surface 3.9. whichi is in the plane of the-edge of the cover D when the cover is closed; .When the cover is closed, theedge. thereof-engages the lever 36 so that the latter is held? out. of .lockingposition. v
When the: coveristhrown-open, the control lever lock 36 is automatically thrown into locking position by aspring, 40, one end of whichis secured,'as by meansof a rivet 41-, to the lock 36, andthe other end'42' of is fixed to thei bearing through which the stud 25 extends; a .7
The operation ofthe-safety device isbriefily as follows Assuming, that themachine has: been operating with. the-parts in: the po- .sition shown in Figsl and 2,.and tl1ewri1ig= ing operation has been completed, the control lever 20 is.- turned clockwisefrom the position shown in. Fig. 2. to that shownin Fig. 3 so as to throw poweroif.v of the basket A. When the" control lever. is thus thrown, the camf35 is moved out ofthe path of'movementof the cover lock 26; The. lever or handle 30may thenbe turnedfrom the position" shown in-Fig. 2 to. that shown in Fig; 3 so as't'o withdraw the-coverlfock from tliestr'ike plate 27'. The cover may-nowf'be raised without danger of my to the operator as the receptacle has been brought 'toa stop, When: the cover is 'raised the-edge of the cover is inoved out of the-path of move ment of the-end 39.,ofithe controlfl'ever lock 36-;sos'that: this'imember-Bd may .move from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3. In the latter position, the end or tooth 37 engages the abutment 38 so thatthe control lever 20 cannot be moved in a direction .to throwthe powenonto. thereceptacle while the coveris open; The. other :end '39 of the control lever lock 36 overhangs'the seat 13 and is in the path of movement of power isagain thrown-onto the receptacle, it is necessarytoclose the cover-for, as stated, while v the coveriszopen, the lock 36 secures the control"lev'e'r QOagainst operation. 7
VVhenthe. cover D'is closed, the edge thereof engages the'camsurface 39, thereby caminingthe lock, 36'; ,tothefposition; shown in Fig. 2so-that the end 37 is-moved; out of the path of movement of thesabntment: 38''. Then the control lever-may be operated: to:throw the power onto the receptacle A; Whemthe, 'control' lever is "thus? operated, the cam 35 --thereonopushes the vcover lock 26- over the strike plate 27, thus locking: the oover Y down.
As many changes couldv made in the above. construction and manyapparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intendedthat allimatter'contained iii-the above: description-or shown'in the accompai-iyingv drawings shall be interpreted as-illustrative: and not: inwa limiting sense.
