Patented Sept. 29, 1931 n. norLisrER, or HALL, MONTANA fronrAnLE STAGING Application filed May 31', 1930. Serial No. 458,082.
This invention relates .,to a portable stag-A ing, the general object of the inyentionbeing to provide a platform adjustable as to its length and ladd'erlike .legs rotatably corr nected With'the platform and haring roller carrying' members at their upper endafwith means for holding the legs in adjusted posi- 4tion whereby the legs can be pl-a-Gedzat Athe endsnof the Vplatform to hold ,the deyice in uprightposition or the legs lcanbe --inoyed to a position at either `side .of the platform with the rollers on Athe members engaging a Wall er the like so that the device will be supported by the Wall and the legs.l v
A further object of the inyent'ion is to provide means for hin'ging the legs tothe platform so rthat the deyiceean .be folded into a compact structure and thus .occupy but little space when not inuse. f
This invention also consists in Acertain other featureswof construction andy-in the .combination and arrangement of the seyeral parts,v vto be hereinafter `fully described, illustrated the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out inzthe appended claims.
Ingdescribing the invention detail, :refr erence will be had to the accompanying drawingswherein like characters denote like or corresponding partsthro-ughout V.the sew eral vie-Ws, and infWhic-hz? i i Figure 1` isffanfend View showing the device arranged against a Wall. l
Figure f2 is a frontyiewof Figure 1.
Figure?) is -a front'yiew show-ing the legs arranged at the ends `of the platform.
Figure f4 is -a plan vie-W of Figure.:
Figure is an feleyation'showing'the device in folded position.
Figure. y6 is a `bottom ure 5.
Figure 7 is afragmentary View showing the V'plain View of Fig- 'fbottom i plan (platform in .extended po- F-igure ySis a section-on ,1 -ine l8-.8.of Figure .7. Y

Figure 1j1 is an elevation 1of one ofthe legs. j :Y Figure 12 is a section on line 12712 .of Figure 11.
In these Views, the `letter A indicatestlie platform and the letters B the legs.Y :'llhe platform comprises the circularpcasings,l preferably formed of. metal anda plurality of strips 2 .connected with `each casing,` the strips being spaced apart, with the strips 6.0
.of one casing entering the spaces between Vthe strips of the other casing so that the platform is a telescopicone. The free ends of each set of strips are connected together by a ,rectangular clamping` member 3 which vfits around the strips yof `both sets, with the rivets L passing through the free ends of the strips of the set to which the clamping member is connected and through slots 5 in the member. A clamping `screw 6 is car- 579 -riedf by one end' of each clampingfmember for clamping the strips in adjusted position. Thus by this arrangement, the platform can be adjusted as' to its length.
. A bracket 7 is "pivoted to [theatlowcrface Aof each casing 1 by laf bolt 8 and `:this bracket carries an arm 9gWhich supports a roller 1G Which is provided with a rubbertire 11; 1 A bracket '12 is hingedly zcoi-.inserted with; the
plate, as shown at 13. Each bracket;
`formed with va straight top-'for engaging the bottom of thecasing 1, a downwardly and Youtwardly sloping rear face'and afpair -of end parts, so thatthe bracketl'forms'a casingopen at itsbottom and inner side ,and a pair of partitions 14 parallel to the ends are spaced from said ends, Witha cross piece 15 connecting each partition with atrend. A stem 16 vpasses through each space formed by .a partition and an end of lthe'brackelt and T90 Vthrough the top land the cross piecesf 15.
The upper end ofthe stem lis formed Withfa hook 17 to engagea flange 181 on the .top
of each casing 1,A a spring 19 on the stem acting :toholdthei stem With its' hook out ofen-gagement with the flange.` The lower end of 4each stem is*V threaded tol .rece-ivea Wing nut 19T so that by turningthe nut in one direction, the stem vis moved down- Wardly against the `wtisnl ef. :its springt@ cause the hook to engage the flange. Then the nut is loosened, the spring will move the hook out of engagement with the flange. The outer sloping wall of each bracket l2 has a pair of straps 2O thereon which are adapted to receive the upper end of the ladder-like leg B. A clamping screw 21 passes through one end of each strap 2O so as to clamp the legs in the straps. Each leg consists of a pair of side pieces 22 and the rounds 23. An end member 24 is hingedly connected to the lower end of each side piece, as shown at 25, and a pair of links 26 connect the inner faces of these end pieces 24 with the head 27 of a flat bar 28 which is supported in the guides 29 attached to some of the rounds, so that by moving the bar 28 longitudinally, the end pieces 24 can be adjusted to a position where they are in alignment with the side pieces 22, or to a position where they extend outwardly from the side pieces, as shown in dotted lines in Figure l1, or to a convergent position, as shown in Figure 2. The ends of these pieces 24 are provided with the rubber tips 30. A spring pressed plunger 31, carried by one of the rounds, is adapted to engage any one of a plurality of holes 32 in the bar 28 to hold the parts in adjusted position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by swinging the legs downwardly on their hinges 13 and rotating the parts on the bolts 8, the legs can be placed in a position at the ends of the platform and the legs will be held in this position by placing the hooks over the lianges of the casings 1 and tightening the set screws on the bolts, as shown in Figure 3. In this position of the parts, the roller carrying arms 9 are arranged under the platform. The sloping outer faces of the brackets 12 will cause the legs to assumethe position they occupy in Figure 3. In this position of the parts, the end pieces 24 at the ends of the legs should be placed in either the position they occupy in Figure 11 in full lines or in the position they occupy in dotted lines in said figure. Figures 1 and 2 shown another way of using the device and as shown in these figures, the legs are moved to one side of the platform and clamped in this position and as the legs are so moved, the roller carrying arms will be swung to project from the opposite side of the plat-form and thus can engage a wall or other upright support, as shown in Figure V1. When used in this manner, the end pieces 24can be adjusted to the position they occupy in Figure 2. Then not in use, the legs are folded, as shown in Figures 5 and 6, so that the device will occupy but little space when not in use. As before stated, the length of the platform can be adjusted.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
