Description

Sept. 29, 1931; N. g. NETHERLAND HOSE PROTECTOR AND ADVERTISING NOVELTY Filed Feb. 18. 1930 Ilia Cilreflerlancz Patented Sept. 29, 1931 'UNITED STATES PATENT? OFFICE NITA G. NEI'HERLAND, OI. BALLSVILLE, VIRGINIA HOSE IROTECTOB AND ADVERTISING NOVELTY Application filed February 18; 1930. Serial No. 429,302.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel hose protector for use while shoes are being shined to prevent shoe polish from getting on the hose; to provide a device of this sort which is of simple and inexpensive construction; to provide a device of this sort so shaped as to be very readily inserted without requiring any attaching devices for fastening it to the shoe; to provide novel 1o means for utilizing the device for advertising purposes; and to provide a novel strip for inserting in the front of the shoe in case of shoes having a very low front to protect the front of the stocking.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a device of such shape that it can be used either with mens or womens shoes.
I attain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in,which,--
Figure 1 is a peispective view of myinvention as applied to a womans shoe of the low or slipper type;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention as applied to a womans low shoes which are laced in front;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the front protective strip 13;
Fig. t is a perspective view of the invention as applied to a mans shoe; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank before it is folded and bentto position for use.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a strip of light, flexible but somewhat stifi material, preferably a strip of light, smooth-surfaced cardboard either paraflined or Waxed, or a stiff fabric or celluloid strip may be used, which is cut into-a blank substantially of the shape illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This 'strip consists of two end portions 6, and an intermediate connecting portion 5, and two flap portions 7. The intermediate portion 5 1s provided preferably with a bottom broadly arcuate tongue 11, and the two end portions 6 are preferably provided with one or more similar broad arcuate tongue portions 12, preferably as shown in Fig. 5.
The strip is folded into an approximately U-shape as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, and the. flaps 7 are folded downward and outwardly along the lines 8, as indicated in Fig. 5. The outer surfaces of flap 7 are used to carry any desired advertisement 9, such as that of a manufacturer of shoe polish or of shoes. I The bottom edge of the strip is provided with the series of broad tongues 11 and 12, shown in Fig. 5, which facilitate insertion of the device between the hose and the back of the shoes, and also aid in retaining it in proper position after it has been placed in its guard osition. The side flaps 12 are suitably shape to ermit of convenient insertion and remov of the bottom edge portion thereof inside the top edge portions'of the shoes and this sha may be suitably modified to conform to t e shape of difl'erent types of low shoes. As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the stri forms a guard or protector which prevents e shoe polishing brush or cloth from coming into contact with andstaining the hose.
I provide asan additional guard element for use with ladies shoes of the low front or jslipper type the accessory strip 13 which has a V-shaped bottom portion and a similar but slightly broader V-shaped top edge by reason of which the strip'will'conform'approximate- 1y to the contour of the top of the shoe and of the'front of the foot'when inserted in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. My invention is intended for use with both mens and womens shoes, since the patronageof shoe shine parlors is often decreased due to the lack of care of the boys who fail to prevent getting stains from the polish on the hose of customei s while their shoes are being polished. p
The flaps 7, which as illustrated in Fig. 5 are relatively wide, have a two fold function in serving first, as a means for conveniently" grasping the device to put it into place and to remove it, and secondly, as a means for carrying any desired advertisement, such as the advertisement of a particular shoe polish, a particular brand of shoe, or the goods or lace of business where the device is used, or ibr'any other desired advertisement. I may resort to any practical modification that may we conform to any particular shape of shoe within the scope of the following claim.
What I claim is: A hose protector for use while shoes are 5 being polished, comprising a strip of flexible material bent into U-shape and having the bottom edge shaped to permit of convenient
