METHOD OF PRODUCING TABLETS OF POWDERY MATERIAL FRAMED IN METAL Filed Sept. 12, 1928 III "tfi 4/ I W// W/ FIG. 3 FIG. 4-
Jzzvezzim' Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HERMAN IPFLEUMER, or DRESDEN-LOSOHWITZ, new 31mm; or nnnsnmv, AND HEINRICH OEXMANN, or BERLIN-LICHTERFELDE, GERMANY METHOD OF PRODUCING TABLETS OI POWDER! MATERIAL FRAMED IN METAL Application filed September 12, 1928, Serial No. 305,598, and in Germany September 16, 1927.
To obtain finished pressed articles, for instance buttons of material in powder, tablets are first produced by an intermediate stage which are subsequently pressed in the pressing tool. It happens frequently that such tablets, specially if they have to be coloured and ornamented, are damaged easily, the inserting of the tablets into the pressing tool requirin much time as, for instance at the manutacturing of buttons, pressing tools'are used which press 100 or more tablets in one operation.
This invention has for its object to avoid these inconveniences.
The improved manufacturing method is as follows 2- The material in powder form is pressed by the pressing piston from below into a hole in a metal plate which has been placed on the pressing chamber, the counter pressing plate with die on the lower surface exerting pressure from above so that a tablet of pressing material is obtained which is securely held on the metal plate. The holding plate with 2 the tablet is then inserted into the pressing tool and the desired shape is given to the tablet by pressing in the usual manner.
The frame plate is preferably made of light metal, for instance an aluminum alloy,
and it has a great number of holes so that in one operation a great number of tablets can be pressed to be subsequently treated all at the same time in an accordingly constructed ress-tool to obtain the finished articles.
preliminary press and a press-tool for carrying out the improved manufacturing method are diagrammatically illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawin s in which 10- ig. 1 shows in vertical section a press for one single metal framed tablet.
Fig. 2 shows a metal frame with tablet in section.
Fig. 3 shows in side elevation a press tool l5 with metal framed tablet inserted.
Fi 4 shows the press tool shown in Fig. 3 in file position after the pressing.
The press for producing metal. framed tablets as shown in Fig. 1 consists of a pressing chamber 1 with press piston 2 forming the movable bottom plate and of an upper press plate 3. a The means for operating the press piston and the press-plate are not shown as such presses are commonly used.
On the pressing chamber 1 a metal plate 4 is placed which has a hole 5 into which the material in powder 6 is pressed by the piston 2 so that the compressed material is securely held in the hole of the metal plate 4 and a metal framed tablet 7 is formed as shown in The press tool for producing the desired article, for instance buttons, may be of any convenient construction. It comprises as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a lower die 8 and an upper die 9 between which the metal framed tablet 7 is placed. When the upper die 9 is lowered upon the lower die 8 the tablet 7 is 3 moulded, the metal frame 4 being at the same time seperated from the tablet and pushed over the lower die 8 by the action of a suitable element, for instance a rod 10 fixed in the upper die 9. The tablet might however remain in the metal frame 4' during the press-- in lhe metal plate 4 may evidently have any desired number of holes, in which case the press tool must comprise a corresponding number of lower and upper dies to simultaneously press all the tablets contained in the metal plate 4.
It is obvious that by the improved method and tools any desired number of tablets may be produced and -subsequently moulded simultaneously, this meaning a considerable 85 saving of time so that the output is increased The metal plate 4 is thicker than the tablet to be obtained as shown in Fig. 2 so that the tablets in the 90 holes of plate 4 are well protected against dama e at the manipulation and at the storing 0% the plates.
At hot pressin the pressing operation is accelerated by ma ing the metal tablet frame 95 of light material, for instance an aluminium alloy, as in this case a better heat contact ex ists between the metal plate and the tablets.
We claim I A method of pressing tablets from powder- 100 preferably made ous material, consisting in pressing the powderous materal into holes in a perforated metal glate which is higher than the tablets p in removing n 1eta.l illate with 5 the powderops matezrzal still m the oles, and in submitting the material to further treatmen whilst m the holes in the perforated plate.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signs tlllBS.
