Description
Sept. 8, 1931 D. H. ROSS 8 7 PAPER CUTTER FOR ROLLED PAPER Filed Feb. 9, 1929 INVENTOR PM i/ Ems I A TTORlfi Patented Sept. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES DON H. BOSS, 013' KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN PAPER CUTTER FOR ROLLED PAPER Application filed February 9, 1929.
The main object of this invention is to provide a cutter for rolled paper which is efiicient, easy to manipulate and at the same time very economical and readily adjusted to the roll of paper, and one in which the cutter may if desired be transferred from one roll to another.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
5 Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of a roll of paper embodying my improvements partially in central longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 11 of Fig; 2.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 22 of 2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using my improved cutter.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cutter removed from the roll.
In the accompanying drawing the roll of paper 1 is provided with a tubular core 2, the paper being closely wound upon the core. The cutter comprises a flat strip of resilient metal 3 having inturned angled arms 4 at its ends loosely engaging within the core.
These arms are of such length that they loosely but effectively retain the cutter upon the roll to be moved about freely thereon.
When it is desired to sever a sheet as 5 from the 'web of paper the paper is unrolled to the desired extent and the cutter 3 grasped as by the thumb of the manipulator clamping it upon the roll of paper. This provides a cutting edge upon which the paper may be readily severed without danger or likelihood of tearing the paper irregularly.
My improvements are especially'designed by me for use on rolls of paraflined or other papers as now extensively used for various purposes, especially in homes and the like Where fixed paper holders and cutters are not commonly found. The cutter is formed so economically from a fiat strip of metal that it is practical to include one with each roll Serial No. 338,701.
of paper, and it does not interfere with the compact packaging of the paper.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combinationdwith a roll of paper and a tubular core therefor of substantial diameter, of a cutter in the form of a flat stri) of resilient metal having angled arms at ts ends loosely engaged and movable radially within the ends of the core so that the cutter is loosely held upon the roll and may be grasped for clamping the paper upon the roll and providing a cutting edge for severing an unrolled portion of paper.
2. The combination of a tubular core for a roll of paper having a cylindrical longitudinal opening of substantial diameter, and a cutter in the form of a flat strip of resilient metal having angled arms at its ends loosely engaged and movable radially within the ends of the roll so that the cutter is loosely retained upon the roll and may be grasped for clamping upon the paper on the roll.
3. The combination with a roll of paper provided with a tubular core, of a cutter bar having arms atits ends loosely engaged and movable radially within the ends of the core so that the cutter bar is loosely retained upon the roll, the internal diameter of the core being such as to permit free radial movement of the arms of the cutter therein as the thickness of the paper on the roll is reduced and so that the cutter may be held in clamping engagement with the paper.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DON H. ROSS.
