Description

Sept. 1, 1931. BOCHNEK v 1,821,875
BRUSH HANDLE ATTACHMENT Filed March 24 1930 v H I Inventor -7 550 CH/VEA.
A iforney Patented Sept. 1, 1931 JACOB BOCHNEK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK BRUSH HANDLE ATTACHMENT Application filed March 24, 1930. Serial No. 438,434.
This invention relates to improvements in brush handle attachments and has particular reference to a simple and novel means of removably connecting a handle member to a brush head.
The primary object of the invention resides in a handle attachment which facilitates the reversal of the brush head upon the handle to permit the brush head to be turned when the bristles along one side become worn,
thus the brush may be worn down evenly 011 v both sides during use which prolongs the life of the same. I
Another object is to provide a brush attachment which includes a socket member having a flattened cross plate at the outer end thereof which is notched or slotted inwardly to facilitate the sliding attachment of the same to a pair of spaced clamping screws carried by the brush head, the said screws adapted to be tightened down upon the plate to firmly the handle member.
A further object is to provide a detachable 2 and reversible handle attachment which is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and easily attached to brushes now in use.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved brush attachment with the handle and brush head in separated condition.
Figure '2 is an enlarged detail vertical transverse sectional view through the brush head showing the handle in attached position to the head. v
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates a brush head in its entirety which includes a brush back 11 with the usual bristles 12 mounted therein. countersunk in the top face of the brush back 11 centrally thereof is a metal rectangular shaped plate 13 which is fasclamp the brush head to tened to the brush back by screws or like fastening elements 14. Threaded into the plate 13 at spaced distances are clamping screws 15, each of which includes a clamping head 16,
. and an outer manipulating head 17.
Associated with the brush head 10 is a handle member 18, one end of which fits into a socket member 19, the said socket member carrying a fiat rectangular shaped cross plate 20 of a size and shape similar tothe metal wear plate 13 embedded in the brush head 11.. The cross plate 20 on opposite sides of the axis of the socket19 is provided with inwardly extending slots or notches 21, both notches opening onto one of the longitudinal side edges of the said plate 20.
In order to attach the handle member 18 to the brush head 10, the clamping screws 15 are screwed outwardly toenable the cross plate 20 to be slid into position directly above the metal wear plate 13, the slot 21 accommodating the threaded shank of the clamping screws 15. When the closed ends of the slots 21 abut the shanks of the clamping screws, the plates 20 and 13 are in alinement after which the clamping screws are turned by grasping the manipulating heads 17 so as to cause the clamping heads 16 to tightly engage the top of the cross plate 20. After the clamping screws have been tightened down. the handle member 18 is firmly connected to the brush head 10 whereupon the brush may be put into use. It will be appreciated that in time, one of the sides of the bristles 12 may become worn, whereupon the 35 clamping screws 15 may be loosened, and the handle member reversed so that what was once the front of the brush is now therear, and which reversal of the handle serves to prolong the life of the brush.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a novel and simple connection between the handle member and the brush head of a sweeping brushin which 95 the two parts may be quickly and firmly connected together and disconnected when de sired to reverse the position of the brush with respect to the handle member.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a brush having a brush back and a handle therefor, the top face of said brush back having a rectangular shaped recess therein, a rectangular shaped metal plate seated in said recess and held by fastening screws passing through openings therein and threaded into the bottom of said recess, said plate being flush with the top of said brush back, spaced threaded openings provided in said plate, double headed screws threaded into said threaded openings, asobket member fitting onto one end of said handle, a fiat plate carried by said socket member and extending transversely of the longitudinal axis thereof, said plate having spaced slot-s extending inwardly from the outer side edge thereof for receiving the threaded shanks of said screws, while said screws are adapted tobe screwed into the threaded openings inisaid first plate until the lower ends of the double heads of Silld screws bears .against the plate on said socket member to vsecurely connect the brush and handle to- .gether. I I
in testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JACOB BOCHNEK.
