This invention relates to flat bed web printing presses of the type shown for instance in my Patents Nos. 988,548; 1,457 ,501; 1,475,566 and others. The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for such presses which will prevent smut or offset fromthe web onto the perfecting impression cylinder, and from it onto the web.
The invention provides a running tympan which is passed around .and between the upper or perfecting cylinder and the web, and means for guiding this tympan and feeding it between the perfecting impression cylinder and its contacting bed, in unison with the movement of the web. The invention also provides means for feeding the tympan Web from a .roll and for re-winding it after use. It also provides means whereby the tympan web may be continuously unwound from the supply roll and continuously rewound upon the ,rewinding roll during the operation of the machine, and for intermittently stopping and shifting the portion of the tympan web which contacts with the web in the press'in accordance with the intermittent shifting of the web between the beds and, cylinders.
While the invention is primarily designed for use in fiat bed web perfecting presses of the character set forth it is applicable to other types of machines in which'traveling cylinders are employed or in which the printing mechanism is thrown off impression during the feeding of the web or sheet, or on one stroke and thrown on impression dur ing the printing or the return stroke.
I will explain one practical embodiment of the invention with reference to the ac- 'companying'drawing to facilitate an understanding of the invention bythose skilled in the art. In the claims the essentials of the invention, and the novel features of construction and novel combinations of parts for which protection is desired, are summarized.

Cooperating with these beds are traveling impression cylinders 2 and 2a, which are mounted in bearings in crossheads 3 which are guided in longitudinal guideways in the sides of the press frame, and are reciprocated longitudinally of the press, so as to move the cylinders 2 and 2a back and forth over the beds, by means of pitmen 3aconnecting the crossheads with crank gears (not shown) which may. be operated by any suitable mechanism. The cylinders can be thrown on impression during one stroke, and thrown off impression during the other stroke of the crossheads. The general construction and arrangement of the aforesaid parts and the operation thereof are well known, and may be as shown and described in my aforesaid patents; and therefore need no further detailed illustration or explanation herein.

not shown, over a guide 92 to a looping roller Set on a lever 6 then inward over the bed 1a to and over a guide roller 93 mounted'on the crossheads adjacent cylinder 2 and, thence up over a guide roller 94 mounted on the crossheads beside cylinder 2; thence out over a stationary guide g5, mounted on the rear end of the frame; thence up over a guide. 96 mounted on the frame; thence inwardly to and over a roll 97 mounted on the crossheads adjacent cylinder 2a; thence down under cylinder 2a and up over a guide 98 mounted on the crossheads beside cylinder 2a; thenceforward to and around a looping roller 66 mounted on the upper ends of the arms 6; thence back under a guide roller g9; thence to the deliveryas in Patent No. 1,475,566.
When the cylinders are on impression and moving across the 'beds 1, 1a, the web is stopped between the'frollers g2 and 99 by the action of the looping rollers 6a, 6b which pposite directions, one giving out as required by the delivery, and the other taking up the web fed in by the feed rolls, as required by the continuous infeed and out feed vof the web. While the cylinders are off impression the web is shifted forward by thecombined action of the looping rollers in e g'wtend taki s p a th 100 tinuous action of the outfeed and delivery mechanisms, in a manner well understood in the art and which needs no detailed explanation herein.
The first printed side of the web comes into contact with the surface of the impression,
cylinder 2a and part of the fresh ink on the web will adhere to the surface of the cylinder and ".smut the same, and the smut is pressed by the cylinder onto the web passing thereunder producing offset on the web, and spoiling the appearance of the printed sheet.
To prevent such smutting I employ a tympan web t which is preferably arranged and operated as follows. The roll T of tympan paper, or other suitable material, may be mounted on a shaft 15a which is removably mounted on a frame F adjacent the end of the press frame, as shown in Fig. 1. The tympan t is led from the roll T to and over a guide G up and over a roller 9 which is journalled in vertically movable bars 11 in frame F and then passes down .under a guide G to and over a guide G2 mounted on the cross heads adjacent the cylinder 2a. and above the web guide g7; then between thecylinder 2a and the bed 1a, then up over a guide G3 on the crossheads adjacent guide g8; then the tympan is led to a guide G4 on the press frame, up over a guide G5 on the press frame and back to a guide G6 on the frame F above the guide G; then down under a roller. 9a, similar-to roller 9and journaled in the bars 11, parallel with and above the roller '9, then the tympan passes .up over a guide G7 and down to a rewinding roll R whose shaft 8 is guided .in vertical slots in the sides of frame F. Roll 3 rests upon two parallel rolls 7 7 as shown whose shafts 7 a are journaled in the sides of frame F. Shafts 7 a carry gears 7 b which respectively mesh with a gear 5a on a shaft 5 and a beveled gear '52) on shaft 5 meshes with a beveled gear 4a on the upper end of a vertically disposed shaft 4. journaled in suitable bearings attached to frame F, and the lower end of shaft' l has a beveled gear 4?) meshing with a beveled gear 13a on a counter shaft 13 j ournaled in suitable bearings in the frame F and extending across to the press frame. Shaft 13 may be geared by suitable gearing, indicated at 13c, 13d, 136, not shown, to the main drive shaft S of the press, so that the periphery of drums7 will be driven in exact accordance with the peripheral speed of the web feeding and web charging rolls of the press.
The bars 11 may be guided in vertical move- 4 ments by any suitable means. As'shown the journals 9?) of roller 9a extend into vertical guide slots 98 in the sides of frame F. The bars 11 are connected to arms 11a on a shaft 12; to which shaft is attached a lever 12a having a roller 12?) engaginga cam 78 on the shaft of the adjacent drum 7. The rewinding roll It is rotated by frictional contact with rolls 7 at the same peripheral speed as said rolls, and these, as stated, are driven by the gearing at the same peripheral speed that the web feeding and delivering rolls are driven in the press. The tympan equalizing rollers 9, 9a are operated once for each reciprocation of the cylinders over the bed; like and in time with the operat-ion of the web looping rollers 6a, 67). The cam 7 s is so shaped that the movement of the tympan web twill correspond with the move-' ment of the web w in the press at all times.
The shafts 4 and 13 and their gearing, and the gears driving the rollers 7, can be mounted-outside or inside of the frame work as desired. The cam 78, the leverlQa, and the bars '11 are preferably mounted inside of the frame work.
lVhen the tympan web has been practically exhausted from the roll T and rewound 1n the'roll It, the press can be stopped and the rewound roll R substituted forthe roll T, and the latter roll substituted for the roll R, then -.-'the tympan is rethreaded through the press as above described.

1. Tympan web handling mechanism; for use on I traveling cylinder web printing presses wherein a portion of the web is stopped during the taking of an impression and then forwarded more rapidly; comprising a tympan supply roll, a pair of tympan rewinding rolls mounted in a frame adjacent one end of the press, reciprocable bars mounted'insaid frame, a pair of looping rollers mounted in said bars, a pivoted lever for operating said bars, a cam connected with one of the rewinding rolls for operating said lever, and guides for directing the tympan from said supply roll to and over one of said looping rollers thence to and between the press cylinder and the Web to prevent offset 7 on the cylinder, thence back. to and over the other looping roller and to the rewinding roll; with means for operating the said rewinding rolls and the cam actuating thelooping rollers to intermittently shift the tympa'n past the cylinder. j v v V 2. Tympan handling devices; for use on printing presses, wherein a portion of the webis stopped during the tak-' ing of an impression and then forwarded more rapidly; comprising a tympan supporting roll mounted in a. frame spacedfrom one end of the press, a pair of tympan rewinding tells mbj ated'in sai frame, reciprocable bars mounted in said frame, a pair of looping said bars, and guides for directing the tympan from said supply roll to and over one of the looping rollers thence to and between the cylinder and web back to and over the other looping roller to the rewinding rolls; with means for driving the rewinding rolls and cam from the press, whereby the tympan is shifted past the cylinder simultaneously with the web.
3. Tympan web handling mechanism; for use on traveling web printing presses wherein a portion of the web is taking of an impression more rapidly; comprising a frame adjacent one end of the press, a tympan supply roll and a pair of tympan rewinding rolls mounted in said frame, a reciprocable support mounted in said frame, a pair of looping rollers carried by said support, a lever for operating the support, a cam attached to the shaftof one of the rewinding rolls and operating said lever, and guides for directing the tympan from said supply roll to and over one looping roller thence to and between the cylinder and the web to prevent offset on the cylinder, and thence back to and over the other looping roller to the tympan rewinding rolls; with gearing between a driven member of the press and the tympan rewinding rolls whereby the tympan handling mechanism is operated to intermittently shift the tympan past the cylinder simultaneously with the web.
