COUNTERBALANCE MOISTENBR Original Filed March 4, 1927 ATTORNEY Patented July 28, 1931 I UNITED sTA WILLIAM A. UTTZ, sn,
or. CLEVELAND, oHIo.
"COUNTER BALANCE MOISTENER This invention relates to moisteners for gummed tape dispensing machines and has special reference to a moistener for the machine shown in my application for patent on gummed tape/dispensing machine, filed March 4, 1927, Serial Number 172,712, Patent 1,731,185, this being a division of said application.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved and simple construction of moistening device for use in machines of the foregoing description.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of carrier for an endless hygroscopic band for use in such machines.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated 1 in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed. I
In the accompanying drawings like'characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and V Figure 1 is a section through the forward end of such a gummed tape dispensing machine as is shown in the application aforesaid, the view disclosing the moistening device.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the moistening web and its support removed from the tank.
Figure 3 is a detail side elevation of the tank, web and holder showing how the holder is tiltably supported in the tank.
Figure 4 is a detail front view of the web support. V s Figure 5 is a detail side view of the web support.
Fi ure 6 is a 'detail showing the moisture In the form of moisteningdevice here shown there is provided the usual water tank 10 but in the upper side edges of this tank there are found the oppositely disposed notches 11. r
The web support consists of a single piece of metal having a body 12 which is of this application filed September general rectangular form although the corners may be rounded as shown in Figure 4.
Projecting in alinement from the side edges of this body-are journals or gudgeons 13 preferably tapered at their junctions with the body as shown at 14: to strengthenthese journals; The journalsf l3 rest in use in'the notches 11 and are located somewhat above the center of the body so that thelatter would, unless otherwise prevented, hang per- ES lT r-0 F E pendicularly from the lower side'edgesfof V the body project the rearwardly' extending arms 15 each of which is' provided with a notch 16. Also the bodyj-is provided at its top and bottom edges with elongated notches 17'so as to provide positioning lugs 18 for the web. V
The holder. thus'described is preferably made from sheet metal by cutting to form and bending the arms 15 rearwardly but I may also use other meansto form the device.
At 20 is a weight in the form of a cross bar which has notches 21 in its under edge cooperating with the notches 16 so that the cross bar, while readily removable for the purpose of applying the endless web, is
' held properly in place to urge the holder or support to position against the tape delivery tube 22 as shown in Figure 6.
Extending around the support is an endless band or web 23 which is made from some suitable material of hygroscopic nature so that water will rise from the tank to wet the upper part of the band by capillary action. This web or band is applied by moving the weight and slipping the band over one arm and into the body, the band yielding enough to the small lugs 18. The band obviously may be slipped around the support from time to time so asto clean surface to the gummed tape.
permit its passage over There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind. described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is not, therefore,
desired to confine the invention to the exact form here present a fresh and shown but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is v 1. In a moistener for gummed tape machines, a flat body having its upper and lower. edges notched to provide pairs of spaced web positioning lugs, weight arms extending rearwardly .from the body and I m provided with notches 'in'their upper edges I adjacent their free ends, a weight spanning said arms and having notches in-its under surface cooperating with the first notches, and trunnions extending laterally from said i body above said Weight arms.
V 2. In a moistener for gummed tape machines, a single sheet of metal stamped and bent to provide a rectangular body portion, ears projecting vertically from the corners .30 of the body portion in the plane thereof,
trunnions projecting laterally from the'side edges of the body portion, and in the plane ofthe body, and weight arms projecting from the side edges of the body portion and g5 bent to extend at right angles to the body portion and in the same direction with respect thereto, said arms having notches in their upper edges adjacent their free extremities to provide weight positioning 0 means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. WILLIAM A. UTTZ, SR.
