The object of this invention is to provide a rifle with a sight of a construction whereby the user of the rifle may obtain accurate aim at the object which he is to try to shoot.
A further object is to centrally fix at the top of a rifle barrel a spring plate that has its ends flanged, and notched to provide sights which are, of course, arranged in a line with each other and parallel to the 1 sight on the rifle barrel, together with Wedge means slidable on the barrel beneath each of the sights so that the said sights may be eas1ly, quickly and accurately adjusted so that the hunters line of vision will be accurately directed through the adjustable sights, over the fixed sight on the barrel, and thereby insure accuracy in shooting.
With these and other objects in view this invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rifle provided with my improved sight.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View of a portion of the rifle barrel provided with the sight, parts of the sight being in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the improvement.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line H of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the barrel of an ordinary rifle and 2 the fixed sight on the barrel. The barrel, at a suitable distance from its inner end, has its top formed with a knob or protrusion 3. The knob or protrusion may be integrally formed with the barrel or may be welded or otherwise secured thereon. The lmob 3 has centrally arranged therethrough a transverse groove whose side walls are inclined for wedging engagement with the inclined walls on a lug 4: that is centrally formed on the inner face of the spring body member 5 of the improvement. Each end of the spring body 5 is formed with an upstanding flange 6. Each flange is formed, on one of its faces with a depression 7 and with a notch 8 arranged centrally of the depression. The flanges, of course, provide the sights.
The under face of each flange, at the portions thereof extending beyond the plate 5, are formed with teeth 9, and these teeth are designed for coengagement in notches 10 formed on the upper and inclined edges of flanges or side members 11 on slidable plates 12, the plates 12 extending beyond the sides and flanges thereof. The outer end of each of the wedge plates 12 is formed with an upstanding lug or head 13 whose upper face is roughened, as at 14. The notches in the wedge plate disposed nearest the muzzle of the rifle are of a less depth than the notches in the remaining wedge plate. The wedge plate nearest the muzzle is used when the sight actuated thereby is employed by the user of the rifle on ordinary ranges, say when shooting at 50 yards or 100 yards, etc., while the inner sight is adjusted when shooting at greater distances and naturally such adjustment must be more accurate than the adjustment of the first mentioned sight.
Having described the invention, I claim:
An adjustable sight for firearms including an elongated plate fixed at a point between its ends on the barrel, a sight projecting upwardly from each end of said plate, said sights including laterally directed extensions projecting beyond the opposed longitudinal edges of the plate, second plates slidable upon the barrel beneath the free end of the first mentioned plates respectively, and upstanding flanges rising from the opposed side edges of each end of the second mentioned plate, said flanges having notches of progressively increasing height whereby said second plate may be slid to engage said extensions with selected notches to adjust the height of the sight.
