This invention relates generally to latches, and more particularly to a form of latch adapted to be applied to doors for cupboards, drawers and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simplified and improved form of latch which may be quickly applied to a door and detached therefrom.
Another object is to provide a latch in which the knob is disassociated from the barrel when the latch is removed from a door.
Another object is to provide a latch in which all of the operating parts, with the exception of the knob, are mounted as a unit for application to and removal from a door.
Other objects include the provision of improvements over Patent No. 1,7 50,812, issued March 18, 1930, for combined knob and latch.
The above and other objects are attained by means of the structure shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a latch embodying my improvements and operatively mounted on a door;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on line 2-2 of Fig.V 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar section of the latch and barrel, showing the latch in open position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the latch proper.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch operating cam; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are, respectively, side and end views of the latch barrel.
The present invention in its preferred form includes a barrel A having a latch B pivotally mounted thereon and adapted to be operated by means of a cam C, through the medium of a knob D detachably connected with the barrel and cam and positioned externally of an escutcheon E.
The latch is adapted to be operatively mounted on a door F of a cupboard, drawer or the like, in which is provided a bore f.
The barrel A has an external flange A1, and an annular shoulder A2 internally of the flange and preferably knurled on its periphery so that when it isforced into the bore f it will be non-rotatably held. The barrel is positioned in the bore so that the inner face of the liange A1 engages the out er side of the door, while the barrel A which is of slightly less diameter than the bore f, extends almost ifnot entirely through the bore.
The barrel is externally threaded on its periphery and is adapted to receive a collar G, whichy is internally threaded and has a fiange G1 at one end thereof. Thus when the barrel is positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the collar Gr may be screwed thereonto so that the outer periphery of the collar will tightly engage the periphery of the bore f, and the flange G1 of the collar will engage the inner side of the door or a washer G2 interposed between the flange and the door. The barrel is slightly flattened at diametrically opposite points A3, A3 on the inner end thereof, and is perforated at A4 at such portions, whereby the barrel may support a transverse pin b on which the latch B is pivotally supported in the barrel.
Said latch has a longitudinally disposed body B1 with a hook B2 at its outer end and a Hat vextension B3 at its inner end. Said extensionfhas a lug B4, which together with a portion B5 on the opposite side of the extensizpn B3 is perforated at B6 to receive the pm n The pin l) carries a spring B7 between the portions B4: and `B5 of the latch-,'-with acentral loop B8 adapted to rest beneath the extension B3 and on, end portions B9 adapted to engage Athe inner periphery of the barrel. Thus the spring B7 yieldably holds the latch in engagement with a pin or strike piece H held in a wall F1, side, shelf orother portion ofv a cabinet,- cupboard or thelike.
Tt will be noted thatthe hook B2 of the latch has a shoulder B10 which engages the pin H.
The bore A5of the barrel carries at its outer end the rotatable cam C which has a circular body portion C1 and an inwardly extending segment C2. Said segment overlies the extension B3 of the latch' so that when the cam is rotated in one direction or Gli the other, as shown in Fig. 3, the extension B3 Will be depressed against the tension of the spring B7, While the hook B2 of the latch Will be correspondingly elevated as shown in broken lines in Fig. l, for disengaging the same from the pin or strike-piece H.
The opposite sides of the cam C may be flattened as shown, so that the cam may be readily inserted in the open end of the barrel A and will clear the flattened portions A3 of the barrel.
The barrel when assembled, including the cam C, is attached to the door F, and thereafter the knob D and escutcheon E are operatively connected with the cam. The escutcheon is boredy to rotatably receive a stem Dl of the knob D, so that the escutcheon may be placed thereon in engagement with the base D2 of the knob and held by means oa Cotter pin D3 extending through the stem, or otherwise.
The stem D1 has a square or rectangular outer portion which seats in a corresponding aperture C3 of the cam so that the rotation of the knob D at its handle D4 Will effect the corresponding rotation of the cam C and oscillation of the latch B. Stem D1 is in serted in the aperture C3 of the cam and the escutcheon E will then engage the outer side of door F on which it may be detachably supported by means of screvvs El, El or by other means.
Thus, the knob being rotatably mounted on the escutcheon, the knob is detachably associated with the cam by means of the escutcheon and the screws El. The handle D4 of the knob may be made of glass, composition or other material mounted in a metallic base D2, or the knob may be integrally formed of metal, as shown.
When necessary the latch may be removed from the door F by first detaching the escutcheon E and knob D, and thereafter removing the collar G, after which the barrel A together With the latch B and cam C may be removed.
It Will be observed that my improved latch readily lends itself to economical manufac-- turing operations and provides a compact mechanism, whereby the rotation of the knob D in either direction is effective for engaging the latch B With or disengaging the same from the strike-piece H.
What I claim is:
1. ln a latch, a latch member, a strikepiece to be engaged by said latch member, a cam for disengaging said latch member from said strike-piece, an escutcheon provided With an opening, means Jfor securing said escutcheon to the latch support, a knob, a stem on said knob extended through said escutcheon opening and into operative and detachable engagement with said cam, and means engaging said stem and the inner side of the Wall of said escutcheon for detachably maintaining said stem and knob in operative position.
2. In a latch, a latch member, a strikepiece to be engaged by said latch member, a cam for disengaging said latch member from said strike-piece, an escutcheon provided With an opening, means for securing said escutcheon to the latch support, a knob, a stem on said knob extended through said escutcheon opening and into operative and detachable engagement With said cam, and a cotter pin extended through said stem for engaging the inner side of the Wall of said escutcheon for maintaining said stem and knob in operative position.
