IMPROVEMENT m SETTEE-S.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,360, dated August 22, 1876; application filed June 21, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BYRON A. OSGOOD, 0 Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Settees,0hairs, and similar articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v

This is an improvement intended to be applied to chairs, settees, sofas, and-similar arsprings are set in front of the center .of the seats, with their closed ends forward, so that there may be more leverage, and consequently more rocking motion, imparted to the settee by the occupant. If the springs were directly under the center, the motion would be a vertical not a rocking one and if the springs were reversed, so that their closed ends were toward the rear, the rocking motion would be less easy. It will beseen that the seat rest-s wholly on the spring, and not on the body. Of course a lighter set of springs would be applied to a chair than to a settee. By this means a hard settee, like that shown in the drawings, is rendered easy and yielding to the form. I propose to substitute a spiral spring bent into the shape of the spring 0, if desired, for lighter work.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I-claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' vIn combination with the seat and lower portion of a chair, settee, or'similar article of furniture, the springs 0, placed in front of the center of the seat, between the seat and lower portion, and having their closed ends toward the front, the said seat resting solely upon the said springs, substantially as and for the purpose herein described..
