This invention relates to an improvement in or modification of the paper roll raising, changing and feeding device described and claimed in the present inventors patent application Ser. No. 68006 and the object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and operation of the device so as torender it more effective and reliable.

In carrying the invention into effect, the
v paper roll is mounted on a shaft b, which maybe arranged in two parts as is well known or ma pass through the paper roll a and be we ged or ke ed thereto in any well known manner. VT e shaft b together A with the roll a are adapted to be traversed up or down the yvertical standards or uprights e at each side of the machine. In addition tothe vertically traversing bearers c, there are the transfer bearers d, which are movable horizontally, out ofthe path of the ascending paper roll spindle and after the `spindle has been traversed past'the transfer bearer, these bearers .again pro]e`ct forward and take under the paper roll spindle. The
paper roll spindle is n'ow lowered by lowering the traverse bearers c, whereb the' spinl dle b is pickedup by the trans er bearers and the traverse bearers are traversed to` their lowest positions when they are in p0- sition and in condition to receive a fresh roll. The operation described is similar to vthat described in the main patent application mentioned above.
The paper 4roll is driven or'braked as' l0 foundnecessary by contacting with an endless band f which is itself driven at the speed of the printing machine. `The lower drum f1 of this Aendless band is the driven member and the upper drum f2 is arranged in any convenient manner to actas a tensioning member. By moving the traverse bearers c upward the paper roll may be caused to contact with the belt with any desired pres' sure or for a greater or lesser angle so as to alterI the` frictional contact by means of which the drive is transmitted.
The traverse bearers are'constructed of box form and ,act as gear cases for enclosing and supporting the gearingby means of which the paper roll is automatically raised to re- 'tain it with uniform pressure against the band f as the diameter. of the roll decreases in unwinding. The spindle b of the paperroll is provided at each projecting end part with broad teeth?)1 which enable endwise adjustment of the paper roll whilst still keepingthe teeth in gear with j a gear wheel l)amounted on the same shaft-as a gear wheel o of smaller diameter which meshes with a pinion g, Figure 5 on a shaft g1 on which there is fixed or keyed a worm v screw p. The worm screw p engages with a worin wheel p1 mounted on the same shaft as a bevel wheel 1' meshing with another bevel wheel z'. The bevel wheel z' is internally threaded and engages on a vertical threaded spindle e1 mounted asa traverse shaft in front of the traverse way of the up- K right e. The arrangement described is duplicated at each side of the machine as will be understood from Figure 2.
The drive through the worm screw p and the worm wheel p1 is non-reversible', that is to say the drive can be transmitted from the worm tothe worm wheel but not from the worm wheel to the worin. The direction in lwhich the worm p rotates the nut i is .that required to cause the nut to rise on the threaded traverse spindle el. At the upper end of the nut z' there is a ball thrust bearing on which a sleeve c2 cast oii the traverse bearerl box rests. sliding fit on the exterior of the traverse screw spindle e, which passes through the said sleeve. The front of the upright dis The sleeve e2 is a loose recessed out to admit the free passage of the sleeve c2 and has side ledges e2 which are embraced by corresponding side cheeks on the traverse bearer as can be seen in Figure 5L The traverse bearer is thus efficiently guided in a steady manner in its travel up or down the guide on the upright e.
The traverse screw spindle e1 is supported at its bottom end in a suitable foostep bearing and at its upper end in a bushing fixed to the side of the machine and carrying a housing for a worm wheel g which engages with a worm on a cross shaft lo adapted to be driven by a motor 71,. The electric motor lz. is reversible and may be. controlled by hand from a switch board'm or automatically by switch levers Z and Z2 connected bya rod Z and adapted to be operated by strikers `Z3, Z3 on the top and bottom of the left hand traverse bearers c in Figure 2.
The operation of the device described above is as follows. The paper roll a/is trundled along the floor until the spindle b is over the journal of the traverse bearer c,
as in the main patent application, and the motor h is then switched on from the switch board mi to start the upward traverse of the traversebearers o'. Both traverse bearersvc rise simultaneously and pick up the spindle Z), the teeth b1 and the teeth of the wheel n being suitably chamfered or eased olf to ensure that the spindle does not ride on the top ofthe teeth but drops properly into engagement with the'teeth of the wheel n. The hoisting movement of the traverse bearers is continued until the, paper 'roll a presses with an adequate pressure on the bandf over them, whereupon they snap back and:
whereupon the roll a is caused to rotate. The paper web is thieaded through the machine and printing continues. In winding ofi' the paper the roll a and spindle b rotate and thereby the drive is transmitted from the teeth b1 to the nut i and the traverse bearers are thusslowly raised to maintain the pressure of the roll on the band f after the motor z. has been switched off. When the roll has been vunwound to the extent that the traverse bearers have brought the spindle -b opposite the inclined face of the transfer bearers al, which as can be seen in Figure 2 engage the spindle b nearer the central plane of the web than the bearer c, these trans-L fer bearers are pushed from left to right in Figure 1, until the spindle b has passed engage under the spindle b of the `nearly spent paper roll. The switch Z is now struck by the top striker Z3 whereby the motor k is .automatically started and the bearers c lowered. The motor drives the traverse spindle e1 which is caused to rotate and as the nut z' is locked by its drive as described above, the nut i is traversed along the trav- 85 erse spindle el and the bearers in virtue 'tinues to draw off have been lowered till the striker Z3 on the bottom of the traverse bearer c has stopped the motor by operating the switch lever Z2. The operations described above are then repeated and the fresh web is ]oined by a gummed strip to the spent web which 1s then severed and the spindle b cast off from the transfer bearer Z in the manner described in the main patent application.l The 'apparatus described may be adapted as described in the main patent application for use with al machine printing a plurality of webs simultaneously or for a machine in which the traverse of the bearers C is in a horizontal instead of a vertical direction.
lt will be observe/d that in the present 1nvention, the traverse screw spindle is employed or rotated to effectthe operations required at changing the web, whilst the nut i is rotated for the slow gradual raising of the traverse bearers 0 for the purposeof maintaining the required degree of driving contact with the paper roll and the band f as the diameter of the paper roll a decreases.
The sidewise adjustment of the paper web is also elfectedby means located in the box shaped traverse bearers c or the bearer c at the left hand side in Fig. 2. The spindle Z) rests on ball bearings b2 housed as shown in Figure 4, inthe box shaped traverse bearers o.' The spindle bi has also at the-left hand end in Figs. 2 and 4 a circumferential groove b3 in which a shifting fork t engages. The fork t is slidably mounted in a boss 11.1 in a rack u which is guided in the traverse bearer c to slide parallel to the axis of the spindle b. actionof a spring located in the boss w1 so that if the groove fork t when the spindle b is placed in the bearer c the fork can slip back out of the way. The rack u' engages with a worm screw v1 on a shaft v mounted in the bearer case and operable by a handwheel as shown in Fig. 6. If the fork t has not nested in the groove b3 when theJ traverse bearer 0 picked up the spindle b the hand wheel may operate the screw l:i1 and rack u till the fork does snap into the groove b3, after which the hand wheel may be operated till the web lof the freshly inserted roll is in line with The fork t is under thev b3 is not opposite the not limited to the details herein described.
What is claimed is:
l. A paper roll changing and driving device for use in printing machines such as rotary printing machines, comprising in combination, a paper roll spindle, traverse bearers for said paper roll spindle, threaded sleeves in said traverse bearers, traverse spindles in engagement with said threaded sleeves, means for rotating said sleeves on the traverse spindles, other means independent thereof and serving for rotating said spindles and transfer bearers adapted to automatically take up the paper roll spindle when being brought into contact with the same.
2. A paper roll changing and driving device for use in printing machines such as rotary printing machines, comprising in combination, a paper roll spindle, traverse bearers for said paper roll spindle, traverse spindles in engagement with said traverse bearers, frictional endless driving means for rotating the said paper roll spindle with a paper roll on the same, during the upward movement of the said paper roll spindle, means operated by the paper roll spindle for raising the said paper roll spindle and keeping the paper roll thereon in contact with the said frictional driving means and other means for adjusting the pressure of the frictional driving means against said paper roll.

A paper roll changing and driving device for use in printing machines such as rotary printing machines, comprising in combination, a paper roll spindle, traverse bearers for said paper roll spindle, traverse spindles in engagement with said til-averse bearers, means for frictionally engaging a ofl construction paper roll on said paper roll spindle, ro-
tating the same and feeding the paper web to the printing machine, other means driven by the paper roll spindle for raising the same and keeping thepaper roll thereon 1n contact with the frictional rotating means, transfer bearings adapted to automatically take up the paper roll spindle at the end of its upward movement, a motor for rotating the traverse spindles and switching devices arranged at the uppermost and at the lowermost position of the paper web spindle and' being adapted to be operated automatically by the same, in order to start and stop the y said motor.
4. A paper roll changing and driving dei vice for use in printing machinessuch as rotary printing machines, comprising 1n combination, a paper roll splndle, traverse bearers for said paper roll spindle, traversespindles -in engagement with said bearers, means for raising said traverse bearers substantially vertically, other means for` rotating al paper roll on said paper roll splndle and feeding the web of the roll to the Aprmting machine, transfer bearings adapted to automatically take up the paper roll spindle at the end of its upward movement, a motor for rotating the traverse spindles, automatically operated devices for starting and stopping such motor at predestined positions of the paper roll spindle and an apparatus
