L. G. KITCAT REMOVABLE BOOK COVER Filed May 27, 1930 Patented June 30, 1931 v U E S A S PATENTIIOFFQICE' LEWIS GEORGE KITCAT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND REMOVABLE Boon covnn i Application filedjlv lay 27,1930; Serial No. {156,046, and in Great Britain June 24, 1929.
materialjand adapted'tobe disposed around the permanent covers and'back of the bookand turned or folded around the edges (often referred to as the fore-edges) of the covers, the terminal parts of the removable cover being provided with stiffening strips or ele-- ments for disposal inside the permanent covers adjacent. to the edges in order to retain the removable 'co verin place. W1th such covers it is found desirable to make the 15, removable cover of. such a length as will ensurethatlthe folds where the' removable cover passes over the edge'sof the permanent covers occur in that portion ofthe removable cover immediately adjacent to the edge of cured to it. This is disadvantageous in that it renders necessary the maintaining of a certain standard of accuracy in the lengths .of flexible material for; the removable covers and in'attaching the stifieningstrips' or elenents. (Afur'ther disadvantage is that the portionfofthe. removable cover which is secured to the stiffening; strip or element. usuallyby an adhesives-4s visible when the cover of thebook is open and is unsightly. Thejchief object of the invention is to [obviate these disadvantages.
position. Thestiffening strip or element may be such that when the removable cover is placedon the book a portion of the stiffening.
strip or element passes. around the edge of the permanent cover of the book and between it and the removable cover and thisjportion may subsequently be on the inside of the permanent cover adjacent to the edge thereof. The stiffening strip orel'ement may be of stiff paper or card, and the removable j Figures 6 and tion of a book illustrating a modified form ofthe cover.
the stiffening strip or element which is se- 7 Accordingto the invention aremovable I ofthebook when the removable'cover is in cover is preferably of lucent material. M r
In order that the said invention may be transparent or trans- 'clearlyunderstood and" readily carried into effect the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figures 1 and 2 are edge views of removable book covers and stifiening stripsmade inaccordance with the invention. 3
Figure 3 is an edge view of aportion of a book showingthe manner in which the r'emovable book cover of Figure. l is applied thereto and, g 1.
"are similar views in re Figures 4 and 5 t5 spect of the cover of Figure 2.
( areedge views ofapor- FigureS illustrates part ofthe edge gof the portion of the removable book cover which is secured to the stifiening strips.
A is the removable cover of which only the end portions ares'hown and BflfB the stiffening strips; The removable cover A is of a transparent paper having acellulose base andis secured to the strips BF, B? by means of adhesive, the edge of'the removable cover being serrated as shown in Figure8 and being secured between. the stiffening strips B 513 and tabs 6 Nrespectively for the purpose of. satisfactorily attaching the cover to .thestrips B 13 Transparent paper of the nature referred to is found to give rise to difliculty in that connectionif s5 anatte'mpt is made to secure a plaincover edge to a stiffening strip merely by the use of adhesive. The thickness of the removable cover A, strips B B and tabs 6 b is exaggerated in-the drawings for ,the sake of clearness. In the arrangement of Figures land 3 theflstiffenin strips'B B areieach turned underneath that part of the removable cover A which lies on the inner-side of the permanent covers C C of the book when the removable cover is in position;
In the arrangements illustrated in Figures 2, 4: and 5 and Figures 6 and 7 a stiffening strip is such thatiwhenthe removablecover is placed on the book a portion of the stiffen" ing strip passes around the edge of the permanent cover of the book and between it and the removable cover. In the arrangement of Figures 2, 4 and 5 the tab 6 is of greater width than the tab and is secured to the stiffening strip B for only a part of its width the remainder of which forms virtually an extension of the strip B When'the removable cover is applied to a book the stiffening strip B is arranged on the inside of one of the permanent covers C thereof so that the fold in the removable cover where it passes over the edge of the permanent cover C is immediately adjacent to the edge of the stiffening strip B The removable cover A is then drawn smoothly round the book and the'other stiffening strip B turned over the edge ofthe other permanent cover C The dimensions and arrangement of the parts are such that a part I) of the tab b -will become folded over and will lie on the outside of the permanent cover C and between it and the removable cover A. The condition of the removable cover and stiff-ening strips at this stage is shown in Figure 4;. The folded-over portion 7) of the tab Z) is now brought to the inside of the permanent cover C as shown in Figure 5. It will be seen that the width of the folded-over portion of the tab 6 is dependent on the length of the removable cover, the attachment thereto of the stiffening strips, and the size of the book and that any inaccuracies or variations are automatically compensated for by a variation in the width of the fold ed-over portion of the tab 5 the folded edge of which is now correctly positioned. The presence of the tab 5 also assists in obtainingtens'ion on the removable cover A. In the arrangement of Figures 6 and 7 the edges of the removable cover are secured to the edges of the stiffening strips B B which are remote from the edges of the permanent book covers C C and the foldedover portion 6 instead of being formed by part of the tab 5 is in this case formed by the stiffenin strip B itself. The removable cover of Figures 6 and 7 is applied to the book in a similar manner to that of Figures 2, 4 and 5.
Instead of the edges of the removable cover A being serrated as described above, rows of holes may be formed therein close and parallel to the edges'thereof. If, however, a suitable adhesive is available or the material of the removable cover such as to be readily secured to the stiffening strips by an adhesive, the edges of the removable cover might be plain and tabs such as 72 b might moreover be unnecessary. Furthermore, the portion I) might be left in the positions indicated in Figures 4 and 6 respectively although it is preferred to arrange them on the inside of the permanent book cover as in Figures 5 and 7;
The face of the stiffening strip which is visible when the permanent book covers are opened may have advertising matter thereon, or a strip of paper having advertising matter thereon may form part of or be secured to the front stiffening strip so as to lie between the front permanent cover of the book and a transparent removable cover so that the matter is visible through the latter.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A removable book cover, comprising a sheet of flexible material adapted for disposal around the permanent covers and back of a book, andstiifening elements on the terminal parts of said removable cover for disposal inside said permanent covers, the removable cover being o'f'such a size as to permit one of the stiffening elements being turned underneath that part of the removable book cover which lies on the inner side of the permanent cover of the book when the removable cover is in position.
2. A removable book cover, comprising a sheet of flexible material for disposal around the permanent covers and back of a book, and stiffening strips secured to the terminal parts of said removable cover and disposed inside said permanent covers, the removable cover being of such a size as to permit one of. the stiffening strips being turned underneath that part of the removable book cover which lies on the inner side ofthe permanent cover .of the book when the removable cover is in position. y
3. A removable book 'eover, comprising a sheet of flexible material for disposal around the permanent covers and back of a book, and stiffening elements on the terminal parts of said removable cover for disposal inside said permanent covers, the removable cover being of such a size as to allow of one of the stiffening elements being turned underneath that part of the removable book cover which lies on the inner side of the permanent cover of the book when the removable "cover is in position, the stiffening element being such that when the removable cover is placed on a book a portion of the stiffening element passes around the edge of the permanent coverof the book and between it and the removable cover.-
4. A removable book cover as in claim 3, in which the said portion of the stiffening strip is subsequently arranged on the inside of the permanent cover adjacent the edge thereof.
5. A removable book cover,eomprising a sheet of flexible material adapted for disposal around the permanent covers and back of a book, stiffening strips for disposal inside said permanent covers, and tabs therefor, the terminal parts of said removable cover being secured between said tabs and said stiffening strlps' and the removable cover being of such a size as to allow of a stif- & fening strip being turned underneath that part of the removablebook cover which lies on the inner side of the permanent cover of the'book when theremovable cover is in position.
6. A removable book cover as in claim 5,
in which the terminal parts are serrated and have perforations adjacent the edges, said parts being secured between a s'tifiening strip and one of the tabs by means of adhesive.
7. A. removable book cover, comprising a sheet of flexible 'material adapted for disposal around the permanent covers and back of a book, stiflening strips for dis osal inside said permanent covers, andta s therefor, the terminal parts of said removable cover being secured between said tabs and said stiffening strips and one of said tabs being so arranged that when. the cover is placed on the book a portion of the tab passes around the edge of the permanent cover of the book and between it and the removable cover. 7
