This invention relates to vacuum pumps and more'particularly to a recooler' associated with the ump for cooling 'the air or gases prior tot ir entrance into the pump for maintaining proper temperature of the fluid pumped to insure eilicient operation of the pump and prevent the re-evaporation'of water or other f iuids which have been previously condensed, during their passage to the ump.
ore particularly, the present invention comprises a lrecooler of the surface type through whic the air or'gas to be pumped travels in a counter current or sinuous path between and vabout a plurality of tubes through which' cooling .water is circulated and a precooler which is attached directly to the .headend of the pump. The cooling water circulating system of the precooler .has direct communication 'with the water cooling system of the pump, thereby providing a combined precooler and pump construction which 'Small space as 'well as one which may manufactured at a relativelyasmall cost.
With these and other objects in view, as may4 appear from the accompanying-specification, the invention consists of various fea# tures of construction and combination of parts, which will be first describedl in connection with the accompanying drawings, showin a precooler for vacuum pumps of the invention,
and the features forming theinventionwill be specifically pointed outin the claims.

Fig. 1- is a vertical secton through the precooler showing it attached to a vacuum pump which pump is shown partly in section.
Fig.I 2 is a side elevation of-an alternate or modified form of the invention.
approved construction embodying the cylin er 2 in which the piston 3 reci'procates. Thec 1inder 2 is water jacket/ed as shown at 4 an the water jacket section 5 at the head end of the 1 has its outer side or end closed by the tube 'sheet or tube head 6 of the precooler structure 7. .j The precooler 7 of the drawings,
is of the surface type embodying a plurality of tubes 8 extending between vthe tube head 6 and the outer tube head 9 and through which the cooling water circulates from the water jacket section 5 into the water box 10 for the purpose of cooling air or gas passing through the shell 11 of the precooler. v
The water box or chamber 10 is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings as vconnected to the. v.
The air or gas enters-the precooler through the suction or inlet opening 15 and is guided in a sinuous ath through the shell 11 of the cooler by ba es 16, leavingl the cooler through the 'outlet 17. j
The outlet 17 is connected by asuitable connection 18 with the suction space 19 of the'vacuum pump lso that the' air or gas will be drawn through' the precooler into the Suction space 9 through the suction valve 20 of thepump and discharged from the pump through the discharge valve 21.
As will be noted by particular reference to the drawings, the recooleris attached directly Ato the pump bo y, the water jacket section 5 serving as one of the water boxes of theV thereby providing a compact relprecooler,
'construction which will effecatively simple water jacket and tively cool the air or gas to the proper temperature prior to its entrance into thev vacuum Y for assuring maximum eiciency in the opera tion of this tpum The modi ed isin its major details, siml-v jlar tothe form shown in Figfl.
der 30 ofthe vacuum pump 31 has the precooler 32 directly attached to the head end' thereof and it is to be understood that a section of the water jacket of the cylinder 30 serves as one of the water boxes of the pre-l cooler 32 in the same manner as that disclosed inthe form-illustratedin Fig. 1. y In contradistnction tothe form shown 1 n hawaen shown in Fig; a
f sinuous path.
havmg-a water jacket, a
. having a water jacket, a
Fig. l1, this modified form has the coolingv water inlet 33 connected to the outer water jacket 34, so that the cooling Water first passes through the precooler and Tthence into the .section 35- of the water jacket of the cylinder 30, passing into the remaining ortions ofpump water jacket to permit circulation of the water jacket through a suita le connection 36, also the air or gas suction inlet 37 of the precooler opens or enters into the precooler nearest the end adjacent to the pump cylinder 30 and the air and gas travels in a' sinuous path through the precooler away .from the pumfp 30v as shown by the dotted ar.- rows, and out of the precooler at the end remote from the pump 31. The air or gas .returns to the pump 31 through the suitable connection 38. l
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the -s ecific construction or arrangement of parts s own butthat they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claims.
