This invention relates to a cooling and'ventilating apparatus designed for use in private residences, apartment houses, hotels, and in fact anybuilding where it is desired to main- Il tain a comparatively cool temperature and to purify'the air, and "the invention has as its primary object to provide a coolingand ventilating. apparatus; for the purpose stated, embodying means whereby air,'su' plied to and purified by the presence of water in minute'particles, within the apparatus.
Another object'of'the invention is to provide an apparatus of this class which will be simple in construction and inexpensive to install and which may be maintained in opera tion with aminimum consumption of electric current.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the class referred to above in which water, delivered in a spray at the top of the apparatus, will be separated.

The apparatus comprises a hollow cylindrical casing 1 which is closed at its lower end by a bottom 2 mounted upon a suitable base 3 and this casing may be of any suitable metal and is provided,near its bottom, with an air intake spout 4 within which is mounted a shaft 5having mounted upon it a fan 6. The shaft is also mounted in a bearing 7 at the opposite side of the casing and is connected with the shaft of an electric motor 8.. The casingis open at its top and a spider;9 is

Pulleys 15 and 16 are mounted upon the shaft 5 and the pumpshaft, and the endless belt 17 is trained about the pulleys. At this point it will be evident that,-when the motor 8 is in operation, rotary motion will'be im-;
parted to the fan shaft '5'so as to create a currentof air flowing through. the spout 4 I and into the casing and out through the open top thereof and, at the same time, the pump 12 being operated by a motor 8, water which is maintained at a proper level within the casing, will be pumped by the pump 12, through the pipe 11 and delivered through the nozzle lOat the top of the casing, V
The means for supplyingwater to the case ing comprises'a water supply pipe18 having a cut-ofi :valve 19 interposed ithereinso" that the supply of water may be all together cut off or suitably regulated as desired and this pipe leads -into-the casing near the bottom thereof,"and a 'regulating valve 20 is interposed within the pipe, Within the casing, a
stem 21 being connected with the stem of the valve-20 and a, float 22 being mountedatthe inner-end ofthe stem so that, when the level of the water in the'casingfalls below the predetermined level, the lowering of the float will effect opening of the valve 20 to provide for the supply of a further volume of water untiltherequired level is reached.
In order thatthe water,- delivered through the spout 10, may be broken up and distributed in fine particles throughout the height ofthe casing, a plurality of foraminous balfies are arranged in a vertical series,-at in-.. tervals in the height; of the casing and-one of these bafiies,-indicated by the numeral: 23, is of conical form and of wire netting of rel,- atively large mesh and other baffles 24 and 25 which are of wire netting are also arranged the order mentioned and below the corresponding baffle 23 and the bafiles 24 and 25 are of a finer mesh than the respective baffle 23. 7 As a consequence, water which is delivered 7 from the spout 10 will be sprayed onto the uppermost one of the baflles 23 and, falling through the openings in the baflle, will reach and spread over the baffle 24 and pass through the openings in this baffle and be spread over the baffle 25, and at this point it will be evident that due to the manner in which the water, introduced at the top of the casing is subjected to the air currents flowing upwardly through the casing and the water is divided into fine drops, there will be suflicient moisture in the air delivered from the easing, to satisfy all requirements and yet not in such volume as to cause inconvenience or discomfort. One of the bafiles 23 is arranged immediately below the nozzle 10 and open top of the casing, and the lowermost of the baffles 23 is arranged immediately above the upper side of the spout 4 through which air is introduced into the casing and, in order that water may be prevented from entering the spout 4, a bafile flange 26 is provided about the top and sides of the opening in which the delivery end of, the spout is arranged.
a In order that the water delivered into the casing and passing through the battles 23, 24 and 25 may be further mutually commuted, a bafile 27 of fine mesh netting is arranged within the casing and this battle is of the concave form shown in the drawing and extends from that side of the casing in which the spout 4 is mounted and close to the lower side of the delivery end of the spout and the baffie is inclined upwardly from this side to the opposite side of the casing so that the blast of air, which is delivered into the casing by the fan 6. will be influenced to travel in an upward direction, thus avoiding any disturbance of the water in the lower end of the easing and further commuting the water which has been deposited on the said surface of the baflie 27.
What I claim is y 1. A cooling and ventilating apparatus comprising acasing, open at its top, an air intake spout extending laterally from the lower portion of the casing, a fan in said spout for delivering air into the casing, a water supply pipe communicating with the casing below thespout, means for conducting water from the casing and delivering the same into the casing at the top thereof, a forarninous bafile within the casing in the path of the delivered water, and a second foraminous battle within the casing curving upwardly from that side of the casing at which the spout is located, and at a point below the spout, and extending to the opposite side of the casing.

A cooling and ventilating apparatus comprising a casing, open at its top, an air intake spout extending laterally from the lower portion of the casing, a fan in said spout for delivering air into the casing, a water supply pipe communicating with the casing below the spout, means for conducting water from the casing and delivering the same into the casing at the top thereof, a conical foraminous bafile in the casing in the path of the delivered water, and a flat foraminous b'aflle and of a mesh finer than that of the first mentioned bafile.

A cooling and ventilating apparatus com rising a casing, open at its top, an air inta e spout extending laterally from the lower portion of the casing, a fan in said spout for delivering air into the casing, a water supply pipe communicating with the casing below the spout, a float valve in said pipe for controlling the supply of water therefrom, means for conducting water from the casing and deliverin the same into the casing at the top thereo and a foraminous baflle within the casing in the path of the delivered water, the said water conducting means comprising a pipe having its delivery end presented at the top of the casing, a rotary pump to which the intake end of the pipe is connected, the intake of the pump being in communication with the intake of the casing at the bottom thereof, and a nozzle at the delivery end of said pipe.
