This invention relates to improvements in door construction.
One object of the invention is to provide animproved construction of double doors 5 of the hinged type, especially adapted for railwaycars, whereinthe meeting edges of the doors are reinforced to provide rigidity and strength, and means is also provided on each door overlapping the edge section of the adjacent door at the meeting edges of the doors to provide combined stop means and a weather and spark seal. 7 I

The end sill ofthe car is designated by 11 and has the striking casting 12 secured thereto. The main body portion of each door comprises a corrugated sheet metal panel 27 which is suitably secured to the frame members 2525 and 2626. The top and bottom frame members 26 are housed within channel beam members 28-28. Each channel beam member comprises a web section 29 which is disposed substantially horizontally and the top beam member 28 is provided with a pair of s aoed depending side flanges 303O while the ottom beam member 28 is provided with s aced upstanding flanges 3131. anges 30 and 31 at the outer side of each door are secured to the sheet metal panel member 27 of said door, the same being preferably riveted thereto. On the inner side each door is provided'withthe usual panel member 32 which is fixed to the frame members 2525 and 26-26.
The meeting edges of the doors 20 and 21 are suitably reinforced by vertically disposed H-beams 3434. The H-beam 34 of each door has the web thereof disposed in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the door, and the flange sections 3535 thereof dis osed in planes parallel to the plane of the oor. As most clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 4, the transverse flange section 35 of the H-beam is secured to the top and bottom beams 28 by means of rivets 36 or any other suitable securing means which extends throu h the flanges 30 and 31 of the beams 28. ach H-beam is also fixed to the corresponding door member by having the web thereof secured to the sheet metal panel member 27, the sheet metal panel member 27 having the inner edge section thereof turned inwardly, as indicated at 37, and riveted to the web member of the H-beam, as most clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4. It will be evident that each H-beam is thus rigidly secured to the inner edge of the door and forms a rigidi'fying and strengthening member for said edge.
The combined stop, weather and sealing strip means of each door comprises a sheet metal section secured to the edge of the same and overlapping a'portion of theinner edge of the adjacent door. As most clearly shown in Figure 2, the door 20 is provided with a vertically disposed strip 38 secured to the flange section 35 of the H-beam of said door. The strip 38 is of such a length as to overlap the inner face of the flange section 35 of the H-beam secured to the door 21 when the doors are closed.
As shown in Figure 2, the section of the strip 38 engages in back of the H-beam of the door 21 and is offset with respect to the remaining portion of said strip so that the doors will be in transverse alinement when closed. The strip 38 may be secured to the flange 35 of the H-beam of the door 20 in any suitable manner and is herein shown as riveted thereto, the strip being disposed on the inner side of said flange, thereby providing a more rigid connection between the strip and the H-beam.
The H-beam of the door 21 has a similar combined stop and sealing strip 38 secured to the outer flange 35 of the H-beam thereof, the strip being riveted to the inner face of the flange of said H-beam and having the free edge section thereof offset so as to overlap and engage with the outer face of the outer flange section 35 of the H-beam of the door 20.
In operating the doors, the one indicated by 20 is first closed by means of the operating mechanism 23 of said door. Vith this door in the closed position, the door 21 is swung inwardly and, as will be evident, the flange section at the inner side of said door will clear the outer flange section 35 of the H beamof the door 20. Inward swinging movement of the door 21 will finally be limited by engagement of the inner flange section 35 of the H- beam with the stop strip 38 secured to the inner side of the door 20 and by engagementof the stop strip 38 on the outer side of the door 21 with the outer face of the flange section 35 of the H-heam of the door 20.
As will be evident, the stop strips 38 which cooperate with the H-beams form a positive limiting means to determine the closed position of the doors and, hold the same in transverse alinement. It will be understood that the door 21 is forced to its closed position by the operating means 23 thereof in the usual manner. After the doors have been closed, the same are tightly locked by the locking mechanism 24. I
The reinforcing H-beams at the meeting edges of the doors of my improved construction form an effective rigidifying and strengthening means to prevent bulging of the doors due to outward pressure exerted thereon, and my improved sealing strip means, comprising the inner and outer combined sealing strip and stop members, in addition to forming positive stop means, also for-ins an effective double weather and spark sea While I have herein shown and described what I consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a door for railway cars, the combination with top and bottom channel-shaped beam members; of a beam of H-shape cross section forming one of the side edges ofthe door, the web of said H-beam being disposed at right angles to the planeof the door, one of the flanges of each of said channel beams at the same side of the door being secured to the flange of the H-beam at the corresponding side of the door; and sheet metal panel means forming the main body portion of the door, the top and bottom edges of said panel being secured to the remainingflanges ofsaid channel members, and the edge section of said sheet metal panel means at said H-beam being turned inwardly at an angle to the main body of the panel and secured to the Web of the H- beam. 7
2. A door construction for railway cars including: a pair of doors hinged attheir outer edges, the inner edge of each door being reinforced by a vertically disposed H-beam having the Web thereof disposed at right angles to the plane of the door and the flanges thereof disposed in planes parallel to the plane of said door, said H-beam being fixed to the'door proper, the H-beam of each door having a combined stop and sealing strip secured thereto, said sealing strips being disposed respectively on the inner and outer sides of the doors, the strip of each door being secured to the inner face of the flange of the H-beam at the corresponding side of the door and having an offset portion overlapping the outer face of the flange at the same side of the other door.
