In attaching fasteners to garments, under the conditions referred to, it is desirable to p have both styles of attaching elements at hand for use, and it is therefore requisite to rapid and effective production, to provide an attaching machine by which a fastener may be attached or set with either type of attach- 95 ing element at the will of the operator.
Particularly in the case ofthe use .of the capped or uncapped posts referred to,.it'has been found that a. setting mechanism, which usually includes a fixed die and a movable plunger, is not suitable for the setting or attaching of the fasteners with .bothtypes of attaching element when furnished with one kind of die only, primarily because of the difference in contour of the flange of the .post when capped and when uncapped. Consequently, it is necessary to provide separate dies for use with the capped and uncapped posts.
' One main object of my invention is to providea means for association withv a fastener setting machine whereby the types of, dies necessary for proper cooperation with the types of attaching elements used may be so arranged relatively to the machine that the die appropriate or complemental to the-type of attaching element being used may be readily operatively positioned with respect to the setting plunger at the will of the operator. I
To this end, the invention contemplates a with means for the reception: of aplurality of dies complemental to the'various types of attaching. elements tobe used, these dies being spaced apart, and the holder being'pivotally mounted relatively to thesetting mechanism so that any desired die may be swung into 3 position for use, means being provided for locking the die holder in adjusted operative position,'and means also being provided for 'supportingthe die-carrying portion of the holder when in operative position sothat the holder may be rigidly supported to take the thrust of the fastener setting operation at two points and the strain of this thrust upon thepivot of the holder thus relieved and care setting mechanism for fastenersetting machines, which includes a die'holder provided ried partly by such pivot and partly by such support, as I will proceed nowmore fully to explain and finally claim.

As previously indicated, the swinging die holder of my invention is adapted primarily for association with a fastener setting machine such, for example, as that shown in Fig. 1. This machine includes a base 1 provided with an arm or horn 2 having a head 3 in which is reciprocably mounted a plunger 4 operated by means of a pivoted lever 5.
to which latter motion may be imparted by a link; either 'inechanically or manually operated as desired. The machine shown is of the type whereby one fastener element is automaticallyfed,-the other fastener element being fed by hand. For feeding the auto matically fed element, a hopper 7 is provided,

' For holding the manually fed fastener ele ment, I mount upon the base 1 the device of my invention. This device comprises a die holder. 11, substantially triangular in shape,
7 as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with means,
pre er'ably recesses 12 and 13, respectively, for holding the dies 14 and 15. These dies are provided with flattened portions 16 and 17, respectively, engaged by set screws 13 and 19, respectlv'e'ly, whereby they are rigidly held in position in the die holder.- y
H As will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2', these dies 14 and 15ers arranged in the die holder 11in spaced relation and at the same radial distance as regards their vertical axes from apivot member This member 20 is in the form of a post haying an extension 21 of reduced diameter extending into the base 1 and clamped therein, as by means of a suitable. clamping nut22 which cooperates with a screwthreaded lug 23 on the end of the extension. The pivot member or post 20 is also provided with a pivot extension 24 of reduced diameter, upon which the die holder 11 is mounted, the lower face of the die holder abutting and seating, for pivotal movement on the extension 24, against a shoulder 25 of the post. The pivot post 20 is counterbored and screwthreaded at 26 for the reception of a retaining screw 27 by means of which the die holder '11 is retained in properly adjusted swinging position upon the extension 24 of the pivot post. Obviously,
the reduced portion 21 provides a shoulder 28 which seats uponthe base 1 of the machine under the elampingaction of the nut 22.
l The portion of the post 20 between the shoulders 25 and 28 is of such a length as to hold the die holder 11, and the dies 14 and 15 carried thereby, at the proper height above the base 1 so that the fastener setting operadies 14 and 15 overhangs the pivot post 20,
it is necessary to provide a support for this portion of the die holder substantially in axial alignment with the plunger 4 to take the setting thrust of the plunger and thus relieve the strain of such thrust on the pivot 24. For this purpose, I provide a supporting member, see Figs. 3 and 4, having a head 29 of the same length or height as the distance between the shoulders 25 and 28 of the pivot post 20 and having an extension 30 mounted in the base 1 in axial alignment with the setting plunger 4 of the machine. This supporting member is interiorly bored as in dicated at 30, Fig. 4, and is provided with a latch member 31 having a latch tip 32 engageable with openings 33 and 34 in axial alignment with the dies 14 and 15 respectively, so that when either of these dies is swung into operative position relatively to the setting plunger 4, the die holder may be appropriately held in operative position. The latch member 31 is normally forced into operative position by means of a spring 35 and may be manually released by means of a button 36. Axial movement of the latch member 31 is limited by means of a pin37 which passes through it and slides in a slot 38 in the member 29.
Die block 14 is provided with a simple depression 39 which substantially conforms to the outer face of the cap 40 of the capped post shown in Fig. 7. Thus, when a capped post is used, it may be properly axially positioned relatively to the setting pltn'iger and the complemental fastener part held by the jaws 10 by means of the depression 39 when the die holder is in the position. shown in Figs'l, 2, 3 and 4.
y The die block 15 has its upper surface of a contour 41 complemental to the contour of the outer face 42 of the uncapped post of Fig. 8, and is provided with a protuberance 43 adapted to enter the interior ofthe post. Thus, when an uncapped post is used, it may be properly axially positioned relatively to the setting plunger 4 and the complemental fastenerpart held by the jaws 10 by means of the die block 15 when the die holder is arranged in the position shown'in broken lines in Fig. 2.
Inoperation, as hereinbefore pointed out, it is desirable at some times to use capped posts of the type shown in Fig. 7, and at other times uncapped posts of the type shown in Fig. 8, and the swinging die holder may be arranged so as to operatively position either the die 14 or the die 15, respectively,
1n axial alignment with the setting plunger 4, simply by withdrawing the latch tip 32 releases of the latch member 31 from the opening 33 or 34 and swinging the die holder upon its pivot 24 until thedie to be used is positioned by re-engagement of the latch tip 32 with the hole 33 or 34 of the die holder, as the case may be.
It is to be noted, as previously indicated, that the die holder when thus positioned is provided with a two-point support, and that the major portion of the fastener setting thrust of the plunger 4 is sustained by the supporting member 29, rather than by the pivot post 20, thus forestalling the possibility of misalignment'and damage of the device as a whole.
Obviously, more than two dies and suitable latch-engaging means may be carried by the die holder, and no matter how many of such dies are thus carried,'they may be appropriately operatively positioned relatively to the setting mechanism of the machine by swinging the die holder upon its pivot and latching it in position by means of the latch member 31. v
Also, the die blocks may have'surface contours other than those shown and described for cooperation with posts or other fastener elements of forms different from the capped and uncapped posts shown and described.
I am aware that rotative and also swinging dies have been heretofore devised, but I am not aware of any in which the separate pivot and supporting members and their cooperative function as in. my invention form a part. 7
Various changes and modifications, other than and in addition to those specifically referred to, are contemplated as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims. p
What I claim is 1. In a fastener setting machine, the combination with a relatively rigid base, of a die holder provided with means to receive a plurality of dies in spaced relation, a pivot mem-' ,ber carried by and extending above said base and on which said holder is pivoted for swinging action out of contact with said base to bring any one of said dies into operative position, and a supporting member carried by said base and extending thereabove and cooperating with said holder beneath the same,:

In a fastener setting machine, the com bination of a die holder provided with means to receive two dies in spaced relation, a pivot member having a pivot on which said holder is mounted for swinging motion, said pivot being spaced the same radial distance from each of said dies whereby either die may be swung into operative position, a supporting member in contact with which the die-carrying portion of said holder may slide during its swinging motion and which with said pivot member provides a two-point support for said holder-to take the fastener-setting thrust against the holder, and a springpressed latch member carried by said supporting member and cooperating with means in said holder for maintaining either of said dies in fixed operative position over said supporting member.

In a fastener setting machine, the combination of a die holder provided with means to receive two dies in spaced relation, a pivot member having a pivot on which said holder is mounted for swinging motion, said pivot being spaced the same radial distance from J 5.
