BOBBIN CLUTCH FOR SPINDLES Filed Nov. 28, 1928 J7z06 /m lad ail 577206 zze 6earyej 'izuvz a er- Patented June 9, 1931 STATE arser earl-cs BOBBIN CLUTCH on ,srmp r ns Application. filed November 28, i928. Serial No. 322,472.
This invention relates to a bobbin clutch for a spindle of the type used in textlle spinnin and twistin ooerations.
It is the general object of our present invention to improve the construction shown and described in our prior Patent No. 1,336,467, issuedApril 13, 1920.
In the construction shown in our prior patent, the upwardly projecting clutch members were entirely exposed when the bobbin was removed and were unprotected at their free ends. his was found objectionable, as coils of yarn or thread frequently accumulated between the clutch members and the spindle blade, thus preventing the desired free swinging movement of the clutch members.
It is the general object of our present invention to improve our prior construction by providing a cap or protecting member above the clutch members, said cap having depending arms positioned between the clutch members and assisting the removal of yarn therefrom.
In the preferred form these depending arms are resilient and yieldingly engage the spindle blade, thus centering and preserving the correct alignment of the cap.
Our invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved spindle and bobbin clutch;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, but with certain parts removed, and
Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the protecting cap.
Referring to the drawings we have shown a spindle comprising a blade 10 having a whirl 11 mounted thereon. The whirl 11 is recessed on its upper surface, as indicated at 12, and is provided with a groove 13 and with an upwardly projecting central sleeve portion 14. Centrifugal clutch members 15 are mounted in the recess 12 with their rounded lower ends 16 seated in the groove 13. i
An annular conical spring disc 18 engages outwardly projecting flanges 20 on the clutch members 15. tion by .a cover plate 22, mounted on the whirl 11. The inner-edge portion 23 of the plate 22 serves as a stop to limit outward swinging movement of :the members '15.
The parts thus far described are substantially as shown in our prior patent and form no separate part .of ear present invention.
Above the upper ends of the clutch members 15 we have provided a cap or collar 30,
tightly fitting the blade 10 and providing a Z protecting flange or projection above the ends of the clutch members 15. The cap 30 is also provided with depending arms 32 which extend between the clutch members 15 and are effective to hold said members in spaced relation. The arms 32 are preferably resilient and are bent inward so that they downwardly approach the blade 10. Preferably the arms 32 yieldingly engage the spindle blade, forming in effect an elongated bearing for the cap 30 and assisting in centering and preserving the alignment thereof. The arms 32 also assist in guiding the yarn over the cap 30, when it is desired to move coils of yarn or thread which may have been wound about the clutch members 15.
The cap 30 with its depending arms 32 also effectively prevents the entrance of coils of yarn between the clutch members 15 and the spindle blade 10, a difficulty which has been encountered in the operation of our spindle as previously patented.
Having thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims but what we do claim is I 1. In a spindle, a blade, a' whirl mounted thereon, centrifugal bobbin clutching members supported on said whirl with their upper ends free to move outward, means on said whirl engaging the lower portions of said clutch members to limit such outward movement of their upper ends, and a cap mounted on said blade and forming a pro- The spring 18 is held inposijecting flange above and free from the upper ends of said clutch members, said cap having depending portions holding said clutch members in spaced relation and said depend- 5 ing portions being inclined downwardly and inwardly toward said spindle blade between said members. a
2. In a spindle, a blade, a whirl mounted thereon, centrifugal bobbin clutching memm bers supported on said whirl with their upv per ends free to move outward,'means on said whirl engaging the lower portions of said clutch members to limit'such outward movement of their upperends, and a cap mounted on said blade and forming a projecting flange above the upper ends of said clutch members, said cap having depending portions holding said clutch members in spaced relation and said depending portions being inclined downwardly and inwardly toward saidspindle blade between said mem bers and resiliently engaging said blade to center and align said cap thereon.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures. 7
