Description

June 2, 193i.
F. W. BAKER BOILER Filed Sept. 10 1928 Patented June 2, 1931 FREDERIC W. BAKER, OF CLAYMONT, DELAWARE BOILER Application filed. September 10, 1928. Serial No. 304,852.
Myinvention relates to improvements in boilers, and particularly to the waterlegs thereof and the primary object of my invention is to so construct the waterlegs of a boiler as to sustain the internal pressures therein without the use of stay-bolts.
A. secondary object of my invention is to so arrange the said waterlegs as to form the side and end walls of the boiler furnace in order that the greatest proportion of direct heat may be absorbed by the water therein, means being provided for due circulation between the waterlegs or fire box and the boiler proper.
Another object of my invention is to facilitate cleaning of the waterlegs by leaving the interior of each -waterleg free, unobstructed, and readily accessible.
I attain these objects by the construction and arrangements of the coacting elements illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. l is the sectional view of a boiler furnace showing the boiler in elevation mounted thereon, the structure being partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is the front end view of Fig. 1, a portion of the boiler and both of the waterlegs being in section to clearly show the adaptation of my invention;
30 Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showing the connecting nipple between the side and end waterlegs.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the two views of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 10 represents the two side waterlegs or fire box which extend the length of the furnace, and 11 represents the waterleg enclosing the front of this furnace, while 12 represents the waterleg which encloses the rear end of the furnace. The waterlegs forming the front and rear of the fire box may be so placed that the boiler 13 may be supported thereby or otherwise, as desired.
The pipes 14 lead from the upper portion of the side waterlegs into the boiler proper and the side waterlegs and the end waterlegs may, if desired be in open communication with each other at the corners Where they are joined together.
The front waterleg 11 preferably has'the firedoors 15 inserted therein and the water connection between this waterleg and the boiler proper may be as described above any or all waterlegs may be fitted with a supply pipe 16.
Each of the waterlegs is formed of two curved plates cooperating to provide a water chamber of concave-convex cross-section as shown in Fig. 2; this curving of the plates forming the waterlegs adds strength to the structure and avoids the necessity of using stay-bolts to stiffen the side walls of the waterleg and therefore leaves the interior of each waterleg free or unobstructed for clean ing purposes, access being had to each water leg through suitable manholes, not shown.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a jacket structure for a boiler furnace, a wall concavo-convex in vertical crosssection and comprising substantially vertically disposed spaced curved plates having substantially parallel upper and lower edges and cooperating to form a fluid section.
2. In a boiler or the like a drum, a-fire box, the walls of said fire box being concavoconvex in vertical cross-section and comprising substantially vertically disposed spaced curved plates having substantially parallel upper and lower edges and forming fluid chambers.
3. I11 a boiler or the like, a drum,a fire box, the walls of said fire box being concavo-' convex in vertical cross-section and comprising substantially vertically disposed curved plates having substantially parallel upper and lower edges and forming fluid chambers, said walls supporting said drum.
4:. In a boiler or the like, a drum, a fire box, the walls of said fire box being concavo-convex in vertical cross-section and comprising substantially vertically disposed curved plates having substantially parallel upper and lower edges and forming fluid chambers, and means communicating said fluid chambers and said drum.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FREDERIC W. BAKER.
