This invention relates to wrapping machines, and while capable of general use, is particularly adapted for wrapping packages or the like fed by hand into the machine.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, said drawin show the machine framework, driving mec anism mounted thereon, package advancin means, rear end folders,-upper and lower end folders, front end folding and package sealing devices, and package cooling devices. These instrumentalities will be described in the order named and are preferably operated and constructed as follows.

Secured at 16, 16 and 18,18 on the rails 17, 17 at the rear thereof, is a feed table 19 from which packages 20 may be fed by hand onto the rails 17, 17 to be pushed threalbng by packzige advancing mechanism hereinafter described. Each'package 20 has folded therearound a wrapper 20 that is overlapped on the bottom of the package "to provide a seam 22 which may be sealed, if" desired, before the package isfed into the machine. a The condition of each packs. e before introduction into the machine is i ustrated, for
example, in Fig. 4 at the left thereof, wherein it will be noted that the wrapper 21 projects from both ends of the package to form lower, rear, upper and front projecting end portions 23, 24, 25 and 26, respectively. The packages advanced along the rails 17 by the package advancing mechanism, are engaged by a top rail 27 that is provided with vertical standards 28. These standards project upwardly through suitable openings formed in the horizontal arms 29 of brackets that have their vertical arms 30bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 31 on the side frame 5 of the machine. The top rail 27 is adjustably supported on said brackets by collars 32 which rest on the top of the bracket arms 29 and may be secured in any position of adjustment on the standards 28, as by thumb screws 33. Driving meekam'mIPFigs. 1 t0 3, inclua'ive Bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 34, on the side frame 6 of the machine, is a support 35- for an electric motor 36. The motor 36 serves to drive the various movable parts of the machine and said motor, and therefore said parts may be controlled by a switch, or by a clutch, or by both, in a manner well understood in the art and requiring no detail descri )tion and illustration. By way of example, however, a control for the motor is shown in the form of a switch 37 bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the machine framework and interposed in a feed line 38; 39 for supplying electrical current to the motor from any suitable source.
Fixed on the armature shaft 40 of the motor 36, is a pulley 41 around which passes a belt 42. The belt 42 also passes around a pulley 43 which is fixed on a .shaft 44 extending transversely of the machine and j ournaled in suitable hearings on the framework thereof, Fixed on the shaft 44 is a sprocket 45 around which passes a chain 46 that also passes around a sprocket 47. Tension on the chain 46 may. be regulated as desired, by a sprocket 48 engaged with said chain and ournaled on an arm 49. The arm 49 is adjustabl pivoted at 50 on the machine framewor which has connected therewithone end of a spring 51 that has its opposite end connected with the arm 49 to yieldingly urge the sprocket 48 against the chain 46 and thereby maintain tension on the same.
The sprocket 47 is loosely mounted on a rockshaft 52 which extends transversely of the machine and is journaled in suitable bear- 'ings on the framework thereof. Fixed on or formed integrally with'the sprocket 47, is a sleeve 53 through which the rockshaft 52 projects loosely into its hearing at the adjacent side of the machine. Fixed on the sleeve 53 is a sprocket 54 around which passes a chain 55. The chain 55 also passes around a sprocket 56, and tension may be maintained on said chain by a sprocket 57Iwhich engages the chain and is adjustably mounted in a bracket 58 bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the machine framework. The
sprocket 56 is fixed on a shaft 59 which extends transversely of the machine and is journ-aledin suitable bearings on the framework thereof. The various movable parts of the machine that act on the packages, are connected with this shaft which thus form the main driving shaft for said parts.

bell crank 68 and a second bell crank 68 having arms 67 and 69, are loose] mounted in spaced relation on a stay shaft 0 extending transversely of the machine at the front end thereof and secured to the machine framework in any suitable manner. A second stay shaft 71 extending transversely of the machine at the rear thereof and secured to the machine framework in any suitable manner,
has loosely mounted thereon in spaced relation, a pair of hell cranks 72, 72' provided with arms 73, 74 and 73, 74, respectively.
The arms 73 and 67 of the bell cranks 72 and 68 are pivotally connected at 75 and'66, respectivel by a link 77. The arms 67 and 73 o the bell cranks 68' and 72' are ivotall connected at 76 and 7 8 res ctively, y a lin 79. The arms 73 and 6 are also pivotalIy connected at 78 and 66 with the link 64 which extends diagonally across the machine to said arms. It will thus appear that by the described connections for the several bell crankswith the cam 60, said bell cranks will be rocked in opposite directions during the operation of the machine. These bell cranks carry a rocking frame for raising and lowering the package advancing means, said frame being comprised by side members 80, 81 having legs 82, 83, respectively. The legs 82 of the side member are pivotally connected with the bell crank arms 69 and 74, and the legs 83 of the side frame member 81 are pivotally connected with the bell crank arms 69 and 74.
Fixed on the shaft 59 at one end thereof, is an arm 84, the free end of which is pivotally connected at 85 with one end of a link 86. The opposite end of the link 86 is pivotally connected at 87 witha bar 88 mounted on and adjustable lengthwise of "a frame member 89,
by bolts 95, 96, a front cross member 97 and a-bracket-like rear cross member 98, respectively. The cross members 97, 98, are bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 99, 100, to the opposite ends of a frame member 101 slidably mounted on the frame member 81. The frame members 89, 101, and the cross members connecting the same, thus constitute a slidable frame mounted on the rocking frame 80, 81, and reciprocated therealong by the described connections for the frame member 89 with the arm 84 on shaft 59.
Bolted or otherwise suitably secured on the cross members 97, 98 of said sliding frame, are a pair of spaced bars 102 that extend longitudinally of the sliding frame. The bars 102 have adjustably mounted there,- on at intervals, transversely alined package advancing members 103, 103, 103" which, through the action of the rocking and sliding frames, repeatedly move upwardly, forwardly, downwardly, and rearwardly relative to the package supporting rails 17, to thereby advance packages along said rails. It will thus appear that the sliding frame moves continuously in a closed or orbital path, and that the package advancing devices arelikewise moved in similar paths. W
Rear anal folders, Figs. 1 to 5 incluaz've, anal 7 to 9 inclusive Tn accordance with the present invention, the rear end folders, which act to fold in the rear projecting end portions 24of the wrappers on the packages, are carried by the pac age advancing means to move therewith and relatively thereto. The rear end folders 104, two in number, are bolted or otherwise suitably secured at 105, on the front ends of links 108 that are pivotally connected at 107 with levers 108. The levers 108 are fixed on rockshatts 109 that extend transversely of the machine. These rpck shafts are journaled in suitable bearings on the framemember 89 and one of the bars 102, respectively, each of which moves continuous] in a closed or orbital path. The rocks aft hearings on frame member 89 are formed in said member and in a bracket 89' bolted or otherwise suitably secured thereto. The rockshaft bearings on the aforesaid bar 102 are formed in a bracket 102 (Fig? 4) bolted or otherwise suitably secured to said bar and projecting downwardly and 'rearwardly I therefrom.
The links 106 and the levers 108 constitute with the brackets 89' and 102', quadrilateral linkage systemsthat are expanded and collapsed to operate the folders 104 as follows.

During forward movement of the package advancing means, a package positioned on the rails 17 in front of the package advancing members 103 is advanced thereby along said rails, and the rollers 111 engage cams 112 which swing the folders 104 upwardly and forwardly so that they fold in the rear projecting end portions 24 of the wrapper on said package. The game 112 are pivotally mounted at 113 on plates 114 that stand vertically and are bolted or otherwise suitably secured, as at 115, on vertical arms 116 of brackets 117. The brackets 117, in turn, are bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the side frames 5 and 6 of the machine; and said brackets have projecting inwardly therefrom,
pins 118 for supporting the pivoted cams 112 in inclined positions. The lower'ends of the cams'112 are curved downwardly to facilitate engagement ofthe rollers 111 therewith, and
forwardly of the (front ends of said cams, and
in spaced relation therewith, are tracks 119 down which the rollers 111 travel after they have passed off the front ends of the cams. The tracks 111 are secured to, or formed integrally with, the plates 114 add project laterally and inwardly therefrom, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 8.
When the folders 104 have folded in the rear projecting end portions 24 of the wrapper on a package as aforesaid, the package advancing means is lowered, retracted, and moved upwardly to advance the next pack- 108 and an arm 121, respectively. The arm 121 extends rearwardly and downwardly from the bracket 89' and is bolted or otherage. The forward movement of the package I wise suitably secured thereto. During rearj wardmovement of thdp'ackage advancing -means, the rollers 111 engage the lower,
curved ends of the pivoted cams 112 and swing said cams upwardly out of the path f movementof said rollers and the arms 110.

upper end folders 1 22 and 123, respectively. These folders are preferably operated and constructed as follows. Fixed on the shaft 131 the parts of which are adjustably connected together, as by pin and slot connections 132, 133. The opposite extremity of the link 131', is pivotally connected at 134 with the free end of an arm 135 that is fixed on the rockshaft 52.
Fixed on the rockshaft 52 are arms 13'(. One of the arms 137 has connected therewith one extremity of a spring 136 that has its opposite end connected with the machine framework. The arms 137 are arranged in pairs of each pair being secured on said rockshaft approximately 180 apart. The free ends of the arms 137 are pivotally connected at 138 with the lower extremities of links 139. The upper extremities of the links 139 are pivo'tally connected at 140, with the lower ends of slides 141 that are mounted for vertical reciprocating movement in guides 142 bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the machine framework at the top thereof. The folders 122 are mounted on the upper ends of the slides 141 and are adjustable vertically there-c on. For this purpose, the folders 1 22, 123 are bolted or otherwise suitably secured. at 142 (Fig. 10) on brackets 143 which are secured to the slides 141, as by pin and slot connections 144, 145, respectively.
The folders 122, 123 have opposed inner ends 122', 123', that are curved or bent outwardly toward the opposite sides of the machine to initially engage the projecting lower and upper end portions 23, 25 respectively of the wrapper on the package. The folders 122 are set somewhat closer to the package than the folders 123. When the package has been positioned'in line with said folders. they are moved by the described connections therefor with the cam 124, toward each other so' that the folders 122 fold in the end projecting portions 23 of the wrapper on the rear folded portions 24 thereof and the folders 123 fold in the upper projecting end portions 25 of the wrapper on the folded portions 23 of said wrapper. I The operating mechanism for the folders 122, 123, then moves them away from each other out of engagement with the package, whereupon the package advancing means rises to engage the pushers 103 with said package. At the same time the pushers 103 are engaged with a second package that has been positioned on the aao'avoe rails 17 to be advanced and have the rear projectingend portions 24 of the wrapper folded, as before described.

package cooling devices, Figs. 1 to 3, inelusive I When the second package is advanced by the pushers 103, to the folders 122, 123, the first package is advanced by the pushers 103' between end plates 146 that fold in the front projectin and seal t e package. The folding and sealing plate 146 extend rearwardly of cooling devices on plates 147 and are provided with heating devices 148 which preferably comprise resistance elements secured to the .plates 146 in any desired manner and connected by lead wires 149,150, with any suitable source of electrical current. The plates 146 and 147 are mounted on spaced brackets or the like 151 (Fig. 2), that .extend longitudinall of the machine and are adjustably mounte as at 152, on the front cross member or yoke 13.
When the first and second packages are advanced by the ushers 103', 103, res ctively, the first pac ageis finally fol ed and sealed by the plates 146and the second package, the rear projectin wrapper portions 24 of which have been olded by the folders 104, is left in position where the lower and upper end folders 122, 123 may fold in the lower and upper projectin wrapper portions 23, 25, as previously descri ed. The package advancing means then lowers again and moves rearwardl during the folding oper- 'ation of the fol ers 122, 123. These foldsecond package between the plates 146 to be finally folded and sealed thereby, and the pushers 103 advance the third package to a sition in line with the " folders 122, 123.

The above mentoned operations are repeated as the packages are fed in succession from the table 19 onto the rails 17, and each package fed from said tableto the rails 17 may, if desired, be registered with respect to the devices in advance of the package by any suitable means for this purpose (not shown).

In a machine of the character described, a movable member, means for moving the member, a linkage carried by and movable with the member, a folder mounted on the linkage to move therewith and relative to the member, and means for moving the linkage and the folder during movement of said member.
