RICHARDS, 0F WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO THE AMERICAN PULLEY COMPANY, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0F PENNSYLVANIA REEL Application led June 4, 1929. Serial No. 368,855.
This invention relates to reels such as are used, for example, to spool wire and the like, and has more particular reference to reels made from sheet metal.
Our invention is directed in the main toward improvements whereby the component parts of reels of the kind referred to are rendered self-centering incident to assembling, and capable of being readily and easily incorporated permanently into unified structures by welding-all to the end of insuring a sturdy and dynamically balanced product with minimum expense for labor and material.
Other objects and attendant advantages will appear in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the attached drawings, whereof F ig. I is a side elevation of our improved reel with a potion broken away and others in section; an
Fig. Il is an axial sectional view ofthe reel taken as indicated by the arrows II-II in Fig. I.
As shown in these illustrations the reel of our invention is constructed throughout from sheet metal with a core bushing 5, a tubular concentric body or barrel 6, and flat circular flange heads 7 which are centrally apertured to engage the shouldered ends 8 of the core piece. In concentric association with the heads 7 are supplemental disks 9 which are likewise centrally apertured to engage over the ends of the bushing 5, and circumferentially flanged at 10 to lit snugly Within the ends of the body or barrel 6, thereby to center the latter in relation to the heads 7 aswell as to the bushing 5. For the sake of lightness, the lflange heads 7 and the supplemental centering disks 9 may be provided with a number of registering openings 11, 12 in symmetric disposal around their center apertures. The flange heads 7 may moreover be provided with suitably allocated anchorage holes 13, 14 for wire or other strand material for which the reel is intended to be used. When the parts are assembled,'it will be seen that the bushing 5 is held in place through coaction of the shoulders .at the ends 8 with the heads 7 and the associated supplemental centering disks 9.
' The body or drum 6, the heads 7.and the supplemental disks 9 are permanently secured together preferably by welding as at 15 along the regions of mutual circumferential contact and abutment within the corner' the welding at 17 may be done previous tc general assembling of the reel components, thereby in effect making the disks 9 parts of the heads 7.
Thus it will be seen that the` described novel construction predetermines self-centering of the parts incidental to assembling them, thereby rendering this operation easy and insuring a dynamically balanced structure after welding. .The absence of bolts or other special securing means is not only important from the standpoint of saving in material and labor costs, but favors lightness and more perfect equilibrium at high speed rotation.
While we have particularly described our invention as a reel, the use of this term in the appended claim is to be regarded in a comprehensive sense to include spools, pulleys or wheels generally Where a like construction Would result in attainment of the several advantages hereinbefore pointed out.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
As a new article of manufacture a reel constructed from sheet metal comprising a core bushing having shouldered ends, a tubular body or barrel, flat circular flange heads lightened by openings symmetrically arranged about their centers, and correspondingly apertured supplemental fiat disks in association with the heads having inwardly directed circumferential flanges adapted to fit perimetrically within the barrel ends and thereby center the latter, said disks and heads co-acting with the core shouldered ends and being secured together respectively by welding along the coincidin ed es of their registerinJ openings, and rt er secured likewise y welding, to each other as well as to the bod or barrel and the core along the regions o mutual circumferential contact and abutment.
In testimony whereoffwe have hereunto signed our names in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 29th day of May, 1929.
