Description

BAIL ATTACHING MEANS FOR CONTAINERS Filed July 25, 1927 gmmtoz umran STAT-ES PATENT OFFICE l 7 loans snoonh. or salmon.
Application m m as, 1m. 8erlal in. 808,175.
This invention relates to bail-attaching means, and more particularly those provided upon metallic vowels, for example containers used for paint.
'l The containers heretofore emlployed, such as sheet metal containers for ho ding aints, pigment, etc., have been provided wit ears on each side near the to of the container throu h which-the hook ends of a bail are 10 passe in order to facilitate transportation of the container and its contents. The ears commonly employed for this purpose are constructed of a cupped iece of metal with a central rforation which are soldered to the sides the container. This solderin op "eration 'not only requires the use of s 'lled labor, but is expensive. Furthermore, these soldered bail-holding ears have proved unreliable, frequently breaking off handhng,
transportation or shi ment; especially, when the container is fille with a heavy material such as paint.
' Among the objects of this inventionis the provision of simple, and readily adaptable means whereby bails malygbe readily attached to cans or similar vesse more particularly sheet metal containers, by inexgenslve means,- and without the need of skille labor or special tools.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a bail-attaching means which can be readil assembled upon the container and which W111 overcome many of the disadvantages incident to the constructions heretofore employed.
Other further and more specific objects of this invention will become readily apparent to'persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing my preferred bail-attaching device upon a can, the bail also being connected and in carrying position.
I Fig. 2 is a section through the can shown in Fig. 1 below the top rim, a portion of the bail-holding member being broken away to facilitate illustration.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Fig. 2,
'and illustrating certain modified detail constructions. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 showin my preferred construction, the bail holdin mechanism comprises the segments (1) an (2) of the circumferential band which are gsrtmned at the top of the can (3) and just low the top rim or head (4) Each of these sections (1) and (2) are provided at one end with an integral aterally extendin stud or pro ection (5) and at the other en with an inte allaterally extending attaching member ai The member of one section fits upon the stud of the other section, thereby locking the band about the can. In order to prevent loosening and disengagement of the sections, the opening at the base of each attaching member is made slightly smaller than the largest peripheral portion of the stud, and when the attaching member is forced u on the stud it will remain securely in place. he
studs (5) are hollow and each is provided with an aperture (7) which when assembled registers with an aperture (8) in the attaching member when the latter is positioned on the stud. The hooked ends of the bail (9) are introduced through these apertures and the bail will be held securely thereby.
' In placing these circumferential bands upon t e container (3) where the taper of the container admits, the bail-holding member may be first assembled and is then forced upwardly from the bottom of the container against the top rim (4) Otherwise, the sections of the clrcumferential band are placed around the can (3) and while in this position the caps are fastened upon the studs. It is to be understood-that in order to fit the bailsupportin band securely to the can or container, the and or the sections must of proper length so that when the caps are fastened on the studs, the band will tightly grip-the container.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3,"both studs or rojections 5"are formed on the ends of e same segment (1), and the attaching members 6 are formed upon the ends of thesegment (2) of the circumferential an In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the 0 l "the ends of the circumferential band (10) is made in one iece with a stud or projection 5 and attachmg member 6" at each end. At the central portion of this circumferential band, a stud or projection (11) is formed, and th1s stud contains theperforation (12) for receiving the hooked end of a bail, the other end of the bail being inserted throu h apertures in the stud or projection 5" an attaching member 6", which assume a position diametrically opposite to. the stud (11), when the band is assembled. It will be seen that by this construction a single fastening means is used.
The bands are of resilient metallic material and the studs and attaching members are formed integral therewith, as they are stamped out of the material forming the bands not readily broken away and do not interfere with the stacking of cans for storage or transportation.
The present invention is not limited to the specific details set forth in the foregoing examples which should be construed as illustrative and not by way of limitation, and in view of the numerous modifications which may be effected therein without departing from the s irit and scope of this invention, it is desire that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention.

A bail holding member for cans comrising a split band for embracing the can Body, means integral with the band and comrislng a projection and an attaching memr of like form, the former telescoped in the latter for securing the band in embraced position with respect to the can body, said projection and member having aligning apertures for receiving one end of the bail, and apertured means integral with and projecting laterally from the band and spaced from the proj ectlon and member for receiving the other end of the bail.
2. A bail attaching device for cans comprising a band forming element for encompassing the body of the can, said element provided with diametrically disposed, integral, lateralextending, a ertured means for receiving bail to attach the latter to the can body, the apertures in each of said means being disposed at ri ht angles to the axis of the can, one of said means formed of two separable apertured parts of like form, one te escoped and substantially embraced by the other and coacting therewith for maintaining said element in band-like form.
3. In a bail-holdin member for cans and the like, a band formed of a pair of co-operating sections each for semi-circumferentially embracing the can body, and means comprising diametrically opposed studs and attaching members integral with the band sections for locking the latter securely around the can body, said studs and attachin members bein of like construction, the studsieing telescoped and embraced by the attaching members to form supports for the bail ends and held together by the latter.
4. In a bail-holding member for cans and the like, a metallic band formed of a pair of co-operating sections, each for semi-circumferentially embracin the can body, and means comprising diametrically opposed studs and attaching members integral with the band sections for locking the latter secure- 1y around the can body, said studs and attaching members being of like construction, the studs being telescoped and embraced by the attaching members, said studs and attaching members having openings for receiving the ends of the bail whereby the studs and attaching members are held together by and form supports for the bail ends.
a 5. A bail attaching device for cans cornprising a band forming element for encom-' passing the can body, said element being provided with integral, laterally extending, apertured means for receiving one end of the bail in a direction to intersect the axis of the can body at right angles, and said element being further formed with a laterally extending, apertured projection and a laterally extending, apertured attaching member, said projection and member being of like construc tion, said projection telescoped and substantially embraced by said member for maintaining said element in band-like form, the aperture in said projection registering with the aperture in said member when the former is embraced by the latter, said registering apertures receiving the other end of the bail in a direction to intersect the axis of the can body at right an les.
6. A bai attaching device for cans comprising a band forming element for encompassing the can body, said element being provided with integral, laterally extending, axially apertured means for receiving one end of the bail in a direction to intersect the axis of the can body at ri ht angles, and said element being further ormed with a laterally extending, axially apertured projection and a laterally extendin axially apertured attachin member, sai projection and member being of like construction, said projection telescoped and substantially embraced by said member for maintaining said element in band-like form, the aperture in said projection registerin with the aperture in said member when t e former is embraced by the latter, said registering apertures receiving the other end of the bail in a direction to intersect the axis of the can body at ri ht angles.
In testimony whereof I a x my signature.
