"This invention relates to certain novel improvements in roller skates and has for its 7 principalobject the provision of an improved construction of this character which will "be big y efiicientin use and economical in manufacture.
The salient object of my invention is to provide a roller skate which will have certain of the wheels thereon arranged so that 19 they may be rotated in but one direction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement for lubricating a device of the above described character.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a preferred form. of construction for my. invention mounted at the front of a roller skate which is fragmentally illustrated;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of a preferred form of construction for my invention;
Fig; 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 5 is a detail view depicting the means employed for preventing rotation of the wheel in one direction.
In the acompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of construction for my invention indicates the front portion of a roller skate which has a structure 11 depending therefrom in'which an axle 12 is fixed. Associated with the skate 10 is the usual clamping structure 13 which is employed for connecting the skate 10 to the users shoe.
-Rotatably mounted on the axle 12 is a wheel 14 which may be either of the plain bearing type or which may have suitable anti-friction bearings associated therewith. in the manner well understood in the art. On the outwardly disposed face of the wheel 14 I 1929; .Serial No. "376,314.

Fixed on the axle 12 exteriorly of the wheel 14 is a bracket 16 which is retained in position through the medium of the set screw 17. The bracket 16 includes a portion which is disposed above the circularratchet 15 and in this portion a stud 18is journaled on whicha pawl '19 is fixed which is intended to engage the teeth of the circular ratchet 15. The pawl 19 is held against the teeth of the ratchet :15 by the springQO which has an end portion which isdisposed abovesaid pawl and the opposite end of the spring is fixed on the arm 16. It is, therefore, manifest that the wheel 14 may be rotated in one direction and that the pawl 19 will slide 'over theteeth. However, rotation of the wheel 14 in the opposite direction will cause the pawl 19 to engage in one of the teeth and in this "manner rotation of the wheel 14 will be prevented.
Mounted on the bracket 16 adjacent the pawl 19 isa lubricating mechanism genericall-y indicated by 21 which includes a substan tially conical member which is preferably formed from felt or the like. Alubricant such asoil is introduced onto this substantially conical member and this lubricant is fed as required onto the pawl 19 and "subsequently ontothe ratchet l5 and this arrangement also lubricates the mounting of the pawl 19.
A cap 23 is provided which is substantially dish shaped and whichhas a flange 24 provided ad acent the open face thereof. Suitable securing. elements -25 are extended through this flange 24 andserve to retain'the cap23 in position overthebracket 16 and the parts associated therewith and thus protect tlifse elements from foreign matter and the li e. 'It is-manifest fromthe foregoing description that -I have provided a construction which will permit free rotation of the wheel of a *rollerskate in one'direction "but which willpreverit rotation ofthe wheel-in theop posite direction. This arrangement willobviously aidintheoperation of the skate. *It is-al'soapparent that the-device is arranged so that the operatingparts may be expeditiously lubricated and also so that dust and other foreign matter will be prevented from coming in contact with the operating parts.
It is preferable that a wheel construction such as the foregoing be associated withthe front axle of a roller skate since the construction will be of greater aid in the operation of the skate .when itis mounted in such a position but it is to be understood that the arrangement might be associated with any of the wheels of the rollerskatewithout departing from the purview of my invention. I While I'have illustrated and described the preferred form'of construction for carrying my inventioninto eifectjthis is capable of variation and modificatiomwithout departing from the ,spirit of-fthe invention. I, therefore, do not wishto be limited to the precise details of construction setforth, but desireto avail myself of such variations and modifications-as come within the scope of the appended; claims. 1 v I a ,I-Iavingthusdescribed my invention what I claim asne wjanddesire to protect by' Letters Patent is:
