This invention relates to a sheet holding attachment for card index trays, and particularly trays constructed and equipped with overlapping offset card holders having visible indexes in which the card holders are hinged so that any overlapping card holder may be moved on its hinge to expose the record on the card holders thereunder.
The sheet holding attachment is particularly adapted for use in connection with the visible index equipment disclosed in copending application, Serial No. 871,153, filed June 15, 1929.
The invention comprehends the provision of a plate member provided with suitable means for holding and guiding a sheet so that the sheet may be slidably moved over the plate member to a desired extent, in which the plate member is adapted for slidable attachment to theside edge of a card index tray equipped with card holders having folded sheets so that one flap portion of the folded sheet may be swung upwardly to pe'r- V mit the insertion of the plate member and sheet carried thereby under the upwardly extended flap portion, which may subsequently be placed over the top of theplate member and record sheet thereon, so that a record may 7 be simultaneously entered on the flap por- .130 tion of the folded sheet overlying the plate member and the record sheet on the. plate l member by means of transfer paper when the two sheets are brought into proper registry with oneanother. v
The invention further comprehends the provision of means'on the plate member for readily and detachably connecting the plate member to one side of the'tray, soithat it is slidably supported and guided thereon, to-
p 40 gether with means which "will hold hinged pocket members which have been laid back by hinged movement from their normal visible index position so as to expose the record on one card holder inthis laid back position,
while an entry is being made on the record sheet carried by the holding attachment.
This invention further provides for the rapid manipulation of visible card holders for the entry of'records thereon and f r the plate member of the sheets carried by the holding attachment in which these sheets can be placed in proper position for the entry of the record in a conmaking of duplicate records on a sheet or I struction of the holding attachment and the manner of mounting the same on a card index tray, together with the combined features of the holding attachment with the record sheet thereon and the records on the cardindex tray, all of which are more particularly pointed out in detail in the following description, and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of thisapplication: Y Y
Figl is a plan View of a card indextray equipped with a series of overlapping offset card holders having detachable folded sheets and, the sheet holding attachment applied to the tray in'an operative position with 9. record' sheet thereon illustrating the manner in which the invention is used.
'{ Fig. 2 ris a side elevation of a tray' and holder as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a'longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
4 Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional View taken on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom perspective of the holder detached from the tray.
The sheet metal tray 1 is a conventional type of construction used in conventional visible index equipment and the tray illustrated is formed of asinglesheet of metal having a bottom 2, side flanges 3 extending upwardly from the side edges of said bottom and turned inwardly and downwardly as in-' d t d e provid gu de channel at the opposite sides of the tray to receive the ends of lugs or holder members 5 to each of which is hingedly connected a card holder 6. he holder members 5 have their usual function of spacing the overlapping card holders in ofi'set relation so-that the free margin of each card holder is visible for visible indexing purposes. Folded record sheets 7 are detachably connected to the card holder in any desired manner-such asillustrated in thea 1 mentioned application, and have a bottom flap portion 8 providedwitlrportions connected to the cardholder 6, while the upper flap portion 9.is .t'ree for hinging movement at the fold portion relative to the bottom {portion 8. .Allofzthe told portionsotthese :sheets 7 are arranged insubstantial align- :ment and at-one side'of each-o1t the cardholders -so as to :lie :adjacent to one side oi the tray:Sothahtheflapportionstlot these sheets will hinge in a plane substantially at right angles to the hinging or swinging movement ofthe-cardlholders 6. However tl. relation of the foldedsheetrtothe cardholder is only *for the purpose "of illustration and other waysof securing thesimilar results are com ;prehended by the invention.
The sheet iholding attachment of this inventioncomprisesa plate member 10 "formed of sheet metal and provided with upwardly :andinwardly'directed flanges 1 1 at the side edges to provide guide-channels for slieably receiving and retaining a recordsheet 12 on theupper faceiof the plate'member 10. 0116 end -.o1 the plate member, that end which is normally directed-toward the-rearend of the .tra is formed with an upwardly curved portion :13 which is adapted to overlie the cardholders abovethe oneon which a record is beingmadedn a laid-back posit-ionon their hinged connections with the lugs 5 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8. The-opposite endofthe plate member 10 is formed with a downwardly curved extension 14 which is normally directed toward the front-end of the trayso'that the sheet will not becreased along'the edge of the plate 10 in'theuseof the (attachment by the person operating the attachment resting his hand-onithe forward edgeof the holder, or that portion directed toward the tront ofthe tray. llhisextensien .14 also serves as a han'd rest so that aperson using the attachment can conveniently write .onthe record o'vcrlyingthe plat-e member 10.
A special bracket member 15 is applied to the bottom ,face of the plate member '10 in the manner illustrated, and is formed of a .stripofsheet metal vhaving one end secured to the plate member as indicated at 16 by spot Welding or .the like, adjacent-to which isa curved section '17-curvingoutwardlyand downwardly toward :the adjacent side -.edge of .the plate member, this curved portion 17 being inclined relative to the plane 015 the plate member .10 so that the plate member which the recordis to-be made.
may assume the inclined relation to the tray shown in the drawings in Figs. 2 and 3. A section 18 extends from the edge of the section 17 and extends substantially at right angles to the plate member 10 as illustrated in Fig. 4-, and toward the plate member 10, where it is connected to the section 19 suitably secured to the plate member. A section 20 of the bracket 15 extends laterally from the section 19 away from the plate member 10 and terminates in a lateral projection 21 at the opposite end of the strip forming this bracket. The section 20 is parallel to the section 18 and with the section 19, provides a channel shaped member of'a size to receive-the'flange portions 3 and t at one side otrthe tray, as illustrated in Fig. l, so that the :propermannenthe lip 21 will snap into position under the bottom of the tray.
It will be noted that the bracket member 15 is applied to one side ofthe plate member 10 and that all portions ofthis bracket :member as above described, are inclined :longi tudinally relative .to the plate member 10. This is to permit the support of the plate member lO in'theinclined position illustrated in the drawings when it is applied to the tray. This inclined positionissuch thatthe plate member 10 will lie-substantiallylflat on the overlapping *ofiisetcard holders in the tray which are themselves inclined in the manner shown in Fig.3, and also overlie one side o-fithe tray.
lVith a record sheet 12 appliedinthe holder inthe manner illustrated, for the purpose of making records thereon, in the operation of and use of this invention, =theholder eis appliedto thetray in the manner shownand QlOOVG'ClGSCJJllOGCl, the card holder on which a record isto be made being previously selected, and those overlapping card holders lying above the selected card holder being moved upwardly about theirhinges so as to layback against the upper or inner end of thetray, in themanner shown in Fig. 3. The holder is thenapplied and moved into position so that the-upwardly curved portion 13 will overlie the portionot thecard holders laid 1 back upon their lhinges adjacent to their hinge connections so that they -will be retained in the laid back position while the .platejmember -10 overlies the-card holder on .Previousto upper flap portion 9 of the record sheet on the selected card holder is hinged outwardly about its fold portion and after the holder is applied, this flap portion 9is then moved so.
as to overlie the plate member 10 and the record sheet 12 thereon in the manner shown in Fig. 1. g
It will be noted, as illustrated in Fig. 1, that the'edge of the holder oppositeto .the portion secured to the edge of the tray terminates inwardly of the opposite edge of the tray and also the line of the folds of folded sheets 7 so that the edge of the holder will lie within the folds of these folded sheets in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4. Vith a piece of carbon paper applied over the sheet 12 and under the fiap portion 9, and the sheet 12 moved on the holder so as to align the proper portions of this sheet with the corresponding portions of the flap portion 9, the record entry can then be made and a copy will be made on the sheet 12 as it is entered on the flap portion 9.
This facilitates the making of records so that in addition to the original entry made in the visible index, a current entry can be made on the sheet 12 which may be used for accounting or other purposes in connection with the keeping of accounts or stock records or any other type of record where more than one entry is desired in making the records.
The plate member 10 of the holder provides a convenient writing surface as well as a convenient support for the hand of the operator or person making the record and operating the index and permits the progressive sliding of the sheet 12 in the holder so that successive entries on different folded record sheets in the index can be entered one below the other on the record sheet 12.
The invention comprehends the provision of this novel holder structure, in addition to the combination between the holder and the .tray with its associated hinged card holders or record cards as the case may be, and the associated folded record sheets or cards. and it is to be understood that any combinationof these elements for accomplishing this plural entry of records withthe use of a holder device of the character disclosed is included within the scope of this invention.
