SAMSON 1 051 ,Filed Dec. 13. 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT cFFicE HARRY H. FBANKS, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOE TO TIDAL OIL COMPANY, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, f1 CORPORATION 03: @KLAEOMA SAMSON PO$T Application filed December 13, 1929. Serial No. 418,812.
My invention relates to well drilling equipment, and more particularly to a supciprocated from one end to alternately lift and drop a drilling tool suspended in the well on the end of a cable or wire line which is connected with the opposite end of the beam. As wells drilled with suchequipment often extend to several thousand feet in depth and the reciprocating movement may be meas-v ured by inches it is essential, for drilling a straight hole and in orderto avoid wear of the cable and well casing, that the .cable be centered with the hole.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a suitable mounting for the Sam son post, whereby the cable may be centered in the hole when the equipment is installed and adjusted when necessary to restore such relation when such is disturbed by accident or usage.
In accomplishing this object, I have provided improved details of structure, the
preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a Samson post mounting embodying my improvements, together with sufiicient parts of a well drilling rig for illustrating use of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, vertical, longitudinal section of the mounting and cross section of its supporting sill.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the mounting on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Referring in detaii to the drawings 1 designates part of a derrick floor, and 2 the casing of a well hole which is being drilled. Extending laterally from the floor 2 is a longitudinal sill 3, of the special construction hereinafter described, supported on a cross sill 4 andsupporting a Samson post 5 having bearings 6 at its upper end for the pivot members 7 of a walking beam 8,
which may be actuated from one end by means not shown, and provided at its opposite end with a hanger 9 for drill cable 10, in accordance with ordinary practice.
The longitudinal sill 3 is preferably formed of spaced channel irons 11, 12, the
top and bottom flanges 13, 14 of each of which are cut away above the cross sill to form a pocket for a box-like structure 15, including end plates 16 which may be permanently secured to the members of the sill by welding, as indicated at 17, and serve as spacers for said members and side plates 18 which may be secured to respective sill members by rivets'19,,and are connected together by bolts 20. y
'Fnzed tothe end plates 16, preferably by welding asindicated at 21, are wedge blocks 22 having inclined inner faces 23, and slidably mounted on the cross sill, between the side members of the longitudinal sill and spaced from the wedge blocks 22 are spaced bearing blocks 24 having arcuate bearing sur faces 25 on their inner faces for seatlng a cylindrical foot'meinber 26 fixed on the lower endof the Samson. post 5, preferabl by welding as indicated at 27.
Located between the wedge block 22 and bearing block 24 at each end'of the box 15 is a wedge 28, and extending vertically through the wedges are adjusting rods 29 having threaded upper ends 30 provided with nuts 31 which bear against the tops of the wedges, and having their lower ends projected through openings 32 in a clamp plate .33 that extends beneath the cross sill, and
provided with heads 34 which bear against the bottom'of said plate to urge the plate to the cross sill when the nuts are tightened.
Ihe cross sill is preferably formed of channel irons 35, .36 retained in definite relation by. a spacer plate 37 welded to the lower flanges 38 ofthe respective irons as indicated 51-1139 and providing an extended bearing surface for the clamp plate 33. 1 d0 designates brace rods, each formed in two sections 41, 42 connected by a turnbuckle 43,v with the u'ppersection pivotally connected with the .Sams'on post and the lower section pivotally connected with a plate l4: on the longitudinal sill.
Assuming that the sills are associated with the derrick floor with the longitudinal sill in proper alignment with the well casing, the sliding blocks are seated on the cross sill within the bearing box and the Samson post erected with the cylindrical foot locked between the arcuate bearing faces of the sliding blocks, and the sliding blocks moved to position for loosely supporting the foot by adjustment of the wedges between the sliding blocks and the wedge blocks 22.
With the Samson pest supported by the mom: as eescribed, the post is adjusted forward or back to center the drill cable with the well by manipulation of the turnbuckles on the brace rods, and r-xhen the proper adjustment has been effected the wedges are drawn tight in the mounting box by manipulation of the nuts 31.
Should the centering relation of the cable to the well be disturbed during operation of the equipment, the wedges may be loosened, the Samson post adjusted to restore the proper relationship of the cable to the well, and the wee ges retightened to hold the Samson post in its adjusted position.
It is apparent that the adjustment of the post may be effected by varying its inclination on the arcuated bearings through manipulation of the turnbuclrles on the brace rods or by shifting the bearing blocks to vary the distance between the post and well hole.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a bearing member including separate blocks having arouate faces, a post having a cylindrical foot adapted for support on said faces, and means for clamping the blocks to the foot to retain the post in adjusted position.
2. In combination with a bearing member including separate blocks having arcuate faces, a post having an arcuate foot adapted for support on said faces, and wedge members for clamping the blocks to the foot to retain the post in adjusted position.
In combination with a bearing box including sliding blocks having facing arcuate bearing surfaces, a post having an arcuate foot seatable on said surfaces, wedge members adapted for clamping said blocks against said foot, and means for adjusting and retaining the wedge members to retain the post in adjusted position.
l. In combination with a bearing box in cluding sliding blocks having facing arcute bearing surfaces, a post having an arcuate foot seatable on said surfaces, adjustable brace members for shifting the post on its bearing, wedge members adapted for clamping said blocks against said foot, and means for adjusting and retaining the Wedge memers to retain the post in adjustable position.
5. In combination, a bearing box including end blocks fixed in spaced relation, a movable bearing block mating with each end block and having an arcuate bearing surface, a post having an arcuate foot seated on said bearing surface, one of the blocks in each pair having a wedge face, wedges cooperative with said pairs of blocks to clamp the bearing blocks against said arcuate faces and retain the post in adjusted position.
6. In combination with a longitudinal sill and a supporting cross sill, a bearing box on the longitudinal sill including pairs of fixed and movable blocks, one block of each pair having a wedge face and the movable blocks having facing arcuate bearing surfaces, a post having an arcuate foot seated on said arcuate surfaces, wedges for said pairs of blocks, and a U clamp having a base underlying the cross sill and leg members extended through the wedges and provided with nuts for adjusting the wedges.
7. In combination with a longitudinal sill and a supporting cross sill, a bearing box on the longitudinal sill including pairs of fixed and movable blocks, one block of each pair having a wedge face and the movable blochs having facing arcuate bearing surfaces, a post having an arcuate foot seated on said arcuate surfaces, wedges for said pairs of blocks, a U-clamp having a base underlying the cross sill and leg members extended through the wedges and provided with nuts for adjusting the wedges, and adjustable brace members connected with the longitudinal sill and with the post, for effecting and retaining adjustment of the post.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
HARRY H. FRANKS.
