Description

March 17, 1931. N, SNOW 1,796,900
BOILER CLEANER Filed Nov. 12, 1923- H II n u II III! INVENTOR W ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NORMAN L. SNOW, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR T0 DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORPORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 01' MICHIGAN BOILER CLEANER Application filed November 12, 1923. SerialNc. 674,343.
The invention relates to boiler cleaners and refers more particularly to soot blowers of the type having rotary elements for directing jets of steam or the like against the boiler tubes to remove the soot or carbon deposit therefrom.
The invention has among its objects the provision of a boiler cleaner in which the valve for admitting steam or the like to the blower element is connected to an actuating member and thereby moved in opposite directions toward its open and closed positions and the provision of a boiler cleaner having the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a blower unit head embodying my invention; and
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. r
1 is the wall of a boiler through which the rotary blower element 2 projects. This element extends transverse to the axes of the boiler tubes 3 and is provided with nozzles arranged to discharge jets of steam against the surfaces of these tubes for cleaning the soot or carbon deposit therefrom. The blower element 2 is suitably connected as by the usual swivel to the gooseneck 4 having at its lower endthe integral valve casing 5 in which is locatedthe valve 5 for controlling the supply of steam to the blower element. For rotating the blower element, there is, in the present instance, the sheave 6 which is connected to the element 2 by suitable reduction gearing such as the pinion 7 and the gear 8. The sheave 6 and pinion 7 are mounted upon the shaft 9 extending be tween the upper ends of the arm 10 and extension 11 of the gooseneck 4, while the gear 8 is located between this arm and extension and is connected to the blower element.
For operating the valve there is provided a cam member 15 in the form of a plate or the like fixed to the side of the gear 8 for rotation with the same. The cam 15 is provided with a continuous cam groove or channel 16 in one of its faces which is engaged in by the transversely extending pin or projection 17 on the upper end of the lever 18. This lever is pivotally connected at 19 intermediate its ends to a yoke 20 which latter is secured to the upper end of the valve stem 21. At its lower end the lever 18 is pivotally connected as at 22 to a lug 23 carried'by the valve casing 5.
In operation the cam 15 is rotated with the blower element upon rotation of the latter by the pinion 7 and gear 8. Since the projection 17 is located in the cam groove 16, the lever 18 is positively rocked about its pivot 22 thus depressing or raising the valve stem to respectively open or close the valve to control the fiow of cleaning fluid through the gooseneck to the blower element.
From the above it will be apparentthat the invention provides a boiler cleaner in which the valve is positively moved to open and closed positions upon movement of the blower element.
What I claim as my invention-is:
1. In a boiler cleaner, the combination with a rotatable blower element adapted to discharge steam or the like, of means for rotating said blower element, a cam operated by said means and provided with a. continuous cam slot, a valve for admitting steam or the like to said blower element, and a pivotal lever positively connected to said valve and provided with a projection engaging in said cam slot.
2. In a boiler cleaner, a rotatable blower element, a valve for controlling the supply of cleaning fluid to said element, a valve casing for said valve, and means for positively unseating and seating said valve in dependence upon the rotation of said element, said means including a member rotatable with the blower element, said member being provided with a continuous cam groove, a lever pivotally mounted on the said valve casing and having a connection intermediate its ends with the said valve, and a pin carried by the free end of thesaid lever and engageable in the said cam groove.
3. In a boiler cleaner, the combination with a movable blower element adapted to discharge steam or the like, of means for moving said blower element, a cam operated by said means and provided with a cam slot, a valve for admitting steam or the like to said blower element, and a lever connected to said Valve and having a portion engaging in said cam slot for actuating said Valve upon movement of said blower element.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
