The object of this invention is to provide an air cleaner which will be etficient and capable of manufacture at sli ht cost. v
My air cleaner isprefera ly made of sheet metal and comprises essentially a casing having one end open to serve as an air inlet, this end being provided with air directing blades for the purpose of impartin a whirling motion to the entering air 'to e 'ect a separation of dust by the operation of inertia and also having centrally secured therein an'air outlet which is preferably in the form of a tube connected to the casing by means of the blades aforesaid. This tube may be provided with an air straightener if desired. With this construction the particles of dust carried by the whirling stream of air are thrown outwardly and hug the inside of the casing.
To divert them from the main air stream I have provided the closed end of my casing with an opening therein adjacent its periphery through which the dust carried by the air stream passes. In my preferred form I have provided a chamber constituting a dead air space into which the dust is discharged. This receptacle'is constituted by the portion of the casing beyond the partition and 1s provided with a removable closure or plug so that the collected dust may from time to time be readily removed.
Referring now to the drawings:

The reference character 2 indicates the'casing which is preferably in the form of a cylinder having an open end' 4 serving as an air inlet. This open end is provided with air directing means consisting of vanes or blades 6 which are preferably of spiral form so as to impart a whirling motion to the entering air. These vanes or blades extend between the casing 2 and the tubular member 8 serving as the air outlet.

of the air stream are redirected toward the outlet 8 while the dust carried by the air stream, owing to its greater inertia, passes through aperture 12 provided in artition 10 adjacent its periphery into w at I have termed the dust receptacle 14. This receptacle is formed by the closed end of the cas-' ing 2' and the partition 10 and constitutes a dead air space in which the dust particles are received. The portion 15 of the dust receptacle projects slightly outwardly and downwardly from the main portion thereof so that baffle 16, preferably formed of the material of the partition 10 which is displaced to pro vide the aperture 12. This baflie facilitates the passage of the dust into the receptacle 14. It is of course obvious that the baflie ma be omitted if desired.
As shown on the drawing I have also preferredto'provide my air outlet with an air straightener 20 consisting of one or a plurality of spirally arranged'blades having a portion with a pitch corresponding to the direction of rotation of the outgoing air stream and a straight portion.. The effect of this straightener is to reduce the motion of the outgoing air to simple straight line flow. However, it is obvious that this member may be omitted if desired.
It will be noted that all of the parts of my improved cleaner may be made pf sheet metal and readily secured together by soldering or welding.

An air cleaner comprising a cylindrical casing having an open end and a closed end, an axial clean air outlet tubearranged in the open end of the casing, an annular series of helical blades longitudinally inclined in the direction of the axis connecting said outlet tube and the casing wall, said blades supporting said tube and being arranged to impart an axial whirling motion to the entering air, a partition secured in and extending transversely across the casing adjacent its closed end and forming with the closed end of the casing a dust collecting chamber, said partition being provided at one side of the easing with a dust discharge slot, and said closed end of the casing being provided opposite said slot with an aperturefor removing dust, and a closure for said aperture.

An air cleaner comprising a cylindrical casing having an open end and a closed end, an axial clean air outlet tube arranged in the open end of the casing, an annular series of helical blades longitudinally inclined in the direction of the axis connecting said outlet tube and the casing wall, said blades supporting said tube and being arranged to impart an axial whirling motion to the entering air, a partition secured in and extending transversely across the casing adjacent its closed end and forming with the closed end of the casing a dust collecting chamber, said partition being imperforate except for a dust discharge slot adjacent itsperiphery, and a dust directing lip secured to the plate adjacent the aperture for directing dust therethrough.

An air cleaner comprising a cylindrical casing having an open end and a closed end, an axial clean air outlet tube arranged in the open end of the casing, an annular series ofhelical blades longitudinally inclined in the direction of the axis connecting said outlet tube and the casing wall, said blades supporting said tube and being arranged to impart an axial whirling motion tothe entering air, a partition secured in andextending transversely across the casing adjacent its closed end and forming with the closed end of the casing a dust collecting chamber, said partition being imperforate except for a dust discharge slot adjacent its periphery, said casing being provided at one corner of the closed end with an apertured downwardly projecting tubular extension for the discharge of collected dust, and a closure for said aperture.

An air cleaner comprising a cylindrical casing having an open end and a closed end, an axial clean air outlet tube arranged in the open end of the casing, an air straightener blade adjacent the outlet tube forremoving the whirl from the outgoing air, an annular series of helical blades disposed between said outlet tube and the casing wall and arranged
