In the accompanying drawings which are to be read as a part of the following descrip- 1@ tion Figure 1 is an elevation of a sheet showing a comparatively thick strip of celluloid aplied around the edge of a sheet and glued or otherwise amalgamated thereto, this being the first step in carrying out my invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view but showing a window or sight opening cut out of the celluloid strip, this being the second step of my invention;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing a transparent section of celluloid wrapped around the celluloid sight opening and glued or otherwise amalgamated with the frame of said opening and with the sheet immediately inside said frame, this being the third step followed in producing my invention;
Figure 4 view of the construction shown at Figure 3, but with the edge of the sheet and the ends of the window frame cut away so as to leave the finished tab extending beyond the sheet, this being the final step in the method of making my tab;
Figure 5 is a section at the line 55 of Figure 1;
' Figure 6 is a section at the line 6-6 of ure 3, and
Figure 7 is a section at the line 77 of Figure 4';
In the following description similar numerals of reference will be used to denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing. The sheets shown in the drawing are what are known as loose leaf sheets such as are utilized in loose leaf binders either as ordinary page sheets or as interleafers, but it is immaterial what these sheets are so long as index tabs are serviceable in connection therewith.
In carrying out my invention, a comparatively thick strip 1 of celluloid or other suitable material is glued or otherwise amalgamated with a sheet 2 of paper in lapped position around its edge, and if the strip is celluloid the latter is first softened so as to become tacky and then folded around the edge of the paper and compressed thereto so that the union between the strip and the paper will be a sort of amalgamation, as is shown at Figtures 1 and 5.
A window 3 is then cut in the stripin such manner as to leave a surrounding frame 4, as shown at Figure 2.
An overlay v 5 of transparent celluloid is then wrapped around the window 3 and frame 4 on both sides and amalgamated with the frame and with the sheet 2 so as to present a margin 6 beyond the inner edge of the frame on both sides of the sheet, as shown at Figures 3 and 6, which will leave a space or pocket 7 between the two sides of the overlay within the confines of the frame.
The edge of the sheet 2 and the ends of the frame are then cut away so as to leave the inner partof the frame attached to the sheet, and the ends of the overlay 5 open so as to permit access at both ends to the pocket 7 as shown at Figures 4 and 7.
It will thus be seen that the resultant tab, which I will denote generally by the numeral 8 in Figures 4 and 7 is not only firmly secured to the sheet but is greatly reenforced by the inner and outer edges of the frame, while at the same time a small card can readily be inserted within the pocket 7 or removed therefrom, and there will be no likelihood of cards accidentally slipping from these pockets since the walls of the latter will not swell or 7 tioned reenforce and amalgamated With the overlay to said frame and to said sheet beyond the inner edge of said frame, and finally cutting away the edge of the sheet and the ends of the frame.
2, A projecting index tab for a paper sheet,
comprising transparent celluloid sections having a pocket therebetween and open at the ends, said pocket reenforced along its outer port-ion andhaving a reenforce along the inner portion which latter reenforce is'secured to saidsh'eet, hile said sections have their inner extremities overlapping this last-menlatter and said sheet. v x v In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature hereto. o o
