INVENTOR May-Bram ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 3, 1931 ARTHUR BROWN, OF LAKE CITY, IOWA WORK-HOLDING DEVICE Original application filed May 11, 1929, Serial No. 362,376. Divided and this application filed May 19,
1930. Serial No. 453,781.
vide a. device for supporting rods, pipes, fiat bars or boards and holding the same against movement while operating thereon.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention. consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts,
hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the appended claim-s.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the device, the chain or flexible element being omitted.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, the chain or flexible element being omitted.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, the chain or flexible element being shown as used for the purpose 3-0 of holding down a bar in the crotch formed by the members 10.
Figure is an enlarged detail cross section- :11 view of a portion of the device, showing how the same may be used for holding aboard or flat bar.
Figure 5 is a detail side elevation of the device showing the same in use for holding a board as in Figure l, on which board a vise or other working implement may be mounted.
In the drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, it will be seen that the device comprises a frame consisting of end transverse bars 11, and an intermediate transverse bar 3 connected by crossed bars 2, the same being secured at proper places by rivets 4 as 1ndicated. Mounted on the base are standards composed of fiat bars 5 having foot portions 6 riveted to the base. There are threesets of bars 5, the two end ones and an intermediate set. The bars or a set converge and then extend vertically upward as at 7 where they again diverge at 10 to constitute the saddle members. Secured to one end standard and to the intermediate standard at one side is a combined brace andstop bar 8, the same being riveted or otherwise secured in place as at 9, the purpose of which will presently appear. p
The diverging arms 10 of the standardbars have holes 11 through which may be passed pins 12 on which an article-to-be-supported' of a catch plate 24 that is secured to one of the standards composed of the bars 5.
- A spring 26 may be secured to the lever 22 and another spring 27 secured to the ear 21, these springs having hook ends to which the chain or flexible element 28 may be connected.
7 29 represents a rod, bar, pipe or other article held on the saddles 10 by the chain 28 passing over the same and being placed under tension by pressing down on the lever 22 and causing the catch tooth 23 to interlock with one of the notches 25 of the catch plate 24.
l/Vhen it is desired to'secure a board or flat bar on the supportas when it is desired to mount a vise 31 for example, the cross pins 12 are placed in the proper openings 11 and the board 30 laid thereon. The chain 28 is then passed over the board as indicated in Figures 4 and 5 and the lever is pressed down tightly and latched in its tensioned'position, thereby securely holding the board 30 on the support.
This application is a division ofmy application filed May 11, 1929, Serial No. 362,376v
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought'the.construction and uses of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it relates, and I desire it understood that slight changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention and the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is: LA Work holding device comprising a fraine composed of a base and end' standards which includes legs and diverging saddle arms, a lever fulcrnined atone; end toone leg of a standard, a rack plate secured to the other leg of the same standard tocooperate with said lever, a spring, one end 01": which is anchored to said frameadjacentthe base, a flexible element, one end of WhlClTlSSGCLlIGQl to the other end of said spring and which is adapted to pass over an article located in said saddle arn1s,'a second spring, one end of which is anchored to said lever, said flexible element having its other end secured to the other endflofsald second spring,
2.,In a work holding device, abase, end
standards projecting upwardly from said base and each coinprls'inga front and a back bar secured to the base and converging 11pwardly and'inwardly,'ea'ch leg having a vert'ical portion, said vertical portions extending in contact with one another, means securing said bars together at said contacting portions, said bars having diverging upwardly extending portions constituting a saddle, each upwardly diverging portion having ajser'es of horizontal pinholes, those of the bars of a standard aligning with each on; r, a pin located in sai'dholes of astandard and extendi'ngfrom oneupwardly divenging portion thereof to'the other diverging portion thereof, and means to hold anobjec't in place,
on said pins in said saddle.
