My invention relates toholders foremblems and the like and it has for its object the provision of a new and improved form and arrangement'of parts by which anemblemplate or a license plate may be securely attached in position 'on ah automobile or the i like. In view of the wide-spread use of shutters onthe radiators of cars, it is no lcngerpractical to" apply such emblems or mother plates directly on the front faces of j the radiators. It is one ofthe objects ofmy invention toprovide" means 1 for attaching such anemblenr or other plate firmly in position on thecross bar extending between the headlights of acar, or upon some other conveniently locatedbai.
It isone of theob'ects of myinve'ntion to *provide a construction of this type which shall be adapted for effective use in connection with bars of various sizes, whereby the emblem or other part shall be very firmly held in position without danger of loosening under the influence of the stresses and vibrations to which it is subjected under modern 1 automobiling conditions; being. arranged preferably for convenient use inconnection with a bar without regard to the direction in which such bar extends." It is another object of my invention to provide a construcaotion in' which the clamping means can be tightened to the limit of its strength upon a supporting bar without applying undue pressure on the emblem or other supported part whereby danger of injuring the emblem may be avoidedwhile at the same time the device is held securely in place; To this end, it is one oftheobjects of my invention to'provide stop means serving positively to limit i the clampingfefilect upon'the supported part:
It is'an'other object of my invention to provide a construction which may be produced cheaply and easily, which can be applied 'quickly by any mechanic without special tools, and which will beefiective for an indefinitely longtime. without danger of disorder. j 1 j i It is another object of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my sev eral objects are illustrated in the accompanymg drawing and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to benew and desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the claims.

Referring to the several figures of the drawing, in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same referencecharacters, 10 indicates an emblem plate secured in position upon horizontal bar 11. As is best shown in Fig. 5, my improved securing means comprises two clamp arms 12- and 13 hingedly connected together at their inner end portions, the hinge pin being in the form of a U- bolt 14. The clamping device is of such size with respect to the size of the emblem 10 that when the clamp arms 12 and 13 are standing in alignment as shown in Fig. 4:, the emblem 10 is free to move into or out of engagement with the jaws 15 of the clamp arms, in the t The clamp arms 12 and 13 withthe emblem plate 10 gripped. thereby are held in position upon the bar 11 by means of a cross bar 16 which is removablyand adjustably secured in position upon the legs of the U-bolt 14 by means of wing nuts 17, the legs of the U-bolt beingsuitably threaded for this purpose. For holding the outer ends of the clamp arms 12 and 13 in proper spaced position with respect to the bar 11 for insuring the desired buckling of the clamp arms when their inner ends are brought into contact with the bar,

, WVith the clamp arms in the position as shown in Fig. t,'a plate 10 or other part of corresponding size can-be inserted in the jaws 15 as indicated in said figure. lhe U-bolt 14 is thenmoved rearwardly toward the bar .11 until the hinge of the plates '12 and 13 is brought into contact with the bar whereupon the crossbar 16, is placed in positionand the wing nuts 17 are tightened upon the U-bolt. Thls serves to draw the hmge oi the; clamp arms and the end portions ofthe lugs18 into tight engagement with the supporting bar 11,'serving both-to clamp the emblem lOvery firmly in position and also to secure the device as a whole very firmly in position with respect to the bar 11. The contact of the hinge with the'bar 11 acts-to stop or limit the tightening of the clamp arms upon the plate 10.
Asa result of this construction, any further tightening of the U-bolt upon 'thebar 11, after theinitial tightening of the inner ends of the clamp arms 12 and 13 against the bar 11, serves only to tighten'the device as a whole upon the bar 11 without increasing the tightening effect of the device upon the plate 10.
The emblem 10 is thus vrotected a ainst the l e application of undue pressure thereto such as might serve to crack the enamel on the face tion and can. be as quickly detached when desired.
WVhile I preferto employ the form of construction as illustrated, comprising two separately formed clamping plates hingedly connected together, with each plate having two clamping a'ws thereon, the plates being conne cted in position by means of a UrbOlt as shown, it is to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the details of construction as shown except so, far as they may be so limited by the prior art, it being understoodthat changes might well be made in the construction and arrangement without de-- parting from the spirit of my invention. 7

A device of the class described, comprising in-combination a U-bolt, means for securing said U-bolt fixedly in position on a supporting bar, and means carried by the U-bolt and held by contact withthe bar in position for gripping edge portions of'apart to be supported, the arrangement being such that the contact of the supporting bar with the portions of the device adjacenttothe cross bar of the bolt serves as a positive limit to the tightening of the device on the *supported part. r V

A device of the class described, comprising in combination two oppositely extending clamp memberspivotally connected together and adapted when buckled in one direction to grip a part to be supported and when swung in the opposite direction with respect to each other to release said part-and means for attaching said clamp members to a supporting bar and serving in cooperation with' other parts when tightened in position. on said bar to hold the clamp members in position for gripping said part to besupported at the point of their pivotal connection with each other serving to mount said clamp member fixedly in position on a supporting bar and adapted in cooperation with other parts when tightened in'position on said bar to hold the clamp members in position for gripping saidpart to be supported.

A device of the class described, comprising in combination two oppositely extending clamp members pivotally connected together and adapted when buckled rearwardly to grip a part to be supported and when swung forwardly with respect to each other to release said part, means connected with said clamp members at their inner end portions serving to draw the clamp members into tightened contact with a supporting bar, and means carriedby said clamp members at their outer end portions for holding said outer end portions in spaced relation to said bar serving in cooperation with the other parts to cause said clamp members to be buckled into gripping engagement with the part to be supported when the device is tightened on the bar.

A device of the class described, comprising in combination two oppositely extendingbclamp members pivotally connected together and adapted when buckled rearwardly to grip a part to be supported and when swung forwardly with respect to each other to release said part, means connected with said clamp members at their inner end portions serving to draw the clamp members into tightened contact with a supporting bar, and lugs formed integrally with said clamp members at their outer end portions and extending rearwardly therefrom for holding such outer end portions in spaced relation to said bar for causing the clamp members to be buckled into gripping engagement with the part to be supported when the device is tightened on the bar.

A device of the class described, comprising in combination two oppositely extending clamp members pivotally connected together and adapted when buckled rearwardly to grip a part to be supported and when swung forwardly with respect to each other to release said part, means connected with said clamp members at their inner end portions serving to draw the clamp members into tightened contact with a supporting bar, and means carried by said clamp members at their outer end portions for holding such outer end portions in spaced relation to said bar serving to cause said clamp members to be buckled into gripping engagement with the part to be supported when the device is tightened on the bar,the contact of the sup porting bar with the parts at the inner en s of the clamp members serving to limit the rearward buckling of the clamp members and serving thereby to limit the tightening of the clamp members on the supported part.
