Description

R. E. SAYLES Feb. 24, 1931.
SADIRON Filed April 5,
Patented Feb. 24, 1931 RAYMOND E. SAYLES, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI SADIRON Application filed April 3, 1930. Serial No. 441,234.
My invention relates to improvementsin sad irons. It relates particularly to steaming sad irons utilized for moistening and pressing articles, such as garments, bed clothes and the like.
With such pressing irons, steam is usually supplied to the iron by a hose connected with a boiler or other source of steam supply, the sad iron being heated by electrical heating means.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means for supplyingthe sad iron with water, the electrical heating means thereof being employed to convert the water into steam, as well as to heat the iron for pressing purposes.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a water container carried by the sad iron body and communicating with and discharging into a steam producing chamber provided in the body of the sad iron.
My invention provides further novel means for trapping the water in the body of the iron so that it will not be discharged therefrom in liquid form.
Some of the subject matter herein disclosed is disclosed in an application Serial Number 424,819 filed by me January 31,1930, for an improvement in steaming sad irons.
. The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a sad iron provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, enlarged.
' Fig. 4 is a reduced top view, partly broken away, of the member containing the steam prdoucing chamber.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view, partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of the check valve and parts adjacent thereto.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
1 designates the usual bottom pressing member of the body of the iron, provided with the usual steam channel 2 having an inlet 3,'and a plurality of steam outlets 4 which discharge through the under side of the member 1.
The body of the sad 'iron has a top trapping member 5 on the upper side of the member 1 to which it is attached by bolts 6 passing through holes 7 in the member 5, the lower ends of said bolts being fitted in threaded holes in the upper side of the member 1. Nuts 9 on-the bolts 6 bear against the top of the member 5.
Between the members 1 and 5 is provided heating means comprising an electric heating element 10 of usual type, by which the members 1 and 5 are heated.
A cover 11, enclosing the member 5 and releasably fastened to the member 1 by nuts 12 on the bolts 6, has a handle 13 and a socket 14 adapted to receive an electric connector 15 adapted for electrical connection with a contact strip 16 fastened to the heating element 10. i
y The top member 5 has a water channel 17 having an inlet 18 and forming a steam producing chamber, and also forming a trap to prevent water passing to the steam channel 2 through the steam inlet 3 thereof.
, A steam channel 19 in the top member 5 has an inlet end 20 communicating with the steam producing chamber 17 at the upper side thereof, the steam channel extends downwardly and has its discharge end flaring and into which is fitted the upper tapering end of a connector pipe 21, the lower end of which is tapered and fitted-in the flaring upper end of the steam inlet 3. v
For supplying the steam producing channel or chamber 17 with water, the inlet 18 9.
thereof has fitted therein a threaded nipple 22 which extends through a hole in the cover 11, and which forms a valve casing of a check valve which opens toward the chamber 17.
The lower end of the nipple 22 is internally threaded and has fitted in it a tubular screw 23 upon the upper end of which rests the lower end of a coil spring 24, the upper end of which supports a ball valve 25, which is adapted to be lifted by steam pressure from 1m other end of which has fitted in it the threaded stem of a regulating needle valve 30. A packing collar 31 encircles the stem of the valve 30 and is fitted on the externally threaded adjacent end of the valve casing 29, Fig. 3.
The upper side of the valve casing 29 has a threaded upwardly extending tubular extension 32. which is fitted in a bushing 33 mounted in a hole in. the bottom of a water container or tank 34, the upper side of which is provided with a filling inlet comprising an internally threaded tube 35 in which is removably fitted a screw stopper 36 having therethrough a small air vent 37.
The nipple 22, elbow 26, pipe 27, elbow 28, valve casing 29 andbushing 33 form a water conductor through which water from the container 34 flows by gravity past the ball valve 25 into the steam producing chamber 17.
The heating element 10 heats the top member 5 and bottom member 1, the top member 5 being heated sufliciently to convert the Water entering the chamber 17 from the container 34 into steam, which passes through the channel 19 and pipe 21 into the steam channel 2 through the inlet 3 of the latter, and is discharged through the outlets 4 into the goods which are being pressed.
As the inlet 20 of the steam channel 19 is above the chamber 17, a trap is formed which prevents water passing from the'channel or chamber 17 into the steam channel 2.
The steam pressure in the chamber 17 closes the ball Valve 25, and, as the pressure lowers, water will pass from the container 34 past the needle valve 30 and ball valve 25 into the steam producing chamber 17 where it is converted into steam. By regulating the needle valve 30, the proper amount of water is fed through the water conductor from the container 34 into the chamber 17.
Byremoving the usual top member from the usual type of steaming pressing iron, and substituting my improved water trapped top member therefor, my improved means for supply water to the steaming chamber may be utilized in connection with such usual type of iron.
By regulating the needle valve 30, liquid water will not be fed from the container 34 into the chamber 17 at a rate greater than that at which the water in said chamber is converted into steam, whereby liquid water wil not be discharged from the outlets 4.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, withinthe scope of the appended claims, may
be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a sad iron, the combination with a pressing body having a steam producing chamber, a steam outlet from said chamber to the bottom of said body, and heating means for conversion of liquid water into steam in said chamber, of a liquid water container, and means for conducting liquid water from said container to said chamber for conversion therein by said heating means into steam and including a check valve opening toward said chamber.
2. In a sad iron, the combination with a pressing body having a steam producing chamber, a steam outlet from said chamber to the bottom of said body, and heating means for conversion of liquid water into steam in said chamber, of a liquid water container, and means for conducting liquid water from said container to said chamber for conversion therein by said heating means into steam and including regulating means, and including means controlled by pressure in said chamber by which back flow into said container through said conducting means is prevented.
3. In a sad iron, the combination with a pressing body having a steam producing chamber, a steam outlet from said chamber to the bottom of said body, and heating means for conversion of liquid water into steam in said chamber, of a liquid water container, and means for conducting liquid water from said container to said chamber for conversion therein into steam by said heating means and including a check valve opening toward said chamber and flow regulating means.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
