This invention relates to a double folding machine for a printing press. 1
Theprincipal objects of the invention are to provide a construction of folder; and
means: for mounting and driving a fan particularly, that permits the product to be de-- livered and counted either to the rightfrom the right hand folder and to theleft from the left hand' folder, or to the right from the left hand folder, the right hand folder being inoperative, or to the left from the righthand folder, the lefthand folder being inoperative; to provide simple means by which the fan can be shifted from one position to another in each folder for accomplishing this result ;to provide means for driving the fan in one direction when in one position and in theother direction when in the other position, of such a nature that no gears have to,
be shifted or other connections changed; to provide a delivery belt which Withoutany setting of the parts by the operator, will operate in either direction in accordance with the action of the fan; to iprovidea double box 95 for the fan which can be opened and closed for the purpose of securing the above mentioned change; to so combine these parts with the counters that the counting mechanism will be reversed with the fan without disassembling or reassembling; to provide a simple and efficient method of counting the papers as they are delivered from either folder in'either direction or from both folders in opposite directions; and to provide a frame for supporting the whole mechanism which can be shipped with the folder set up as a unit and add to the simplicity and rigidity as well as providing a permanent align ment of the elements of the frame work.
Other objects and'advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

but illustrating the details below the be,a'r- V Fig. 1 shows in diagrammatic form apair of separate and distinctfolding units, each unit being fitted with folding and cutting cylinders 15 and 16, folding rolls 19, delivery fans 32 and delivery belts 31. The fans ar placed in their bearings 40 and are rotated in the direction shown by the arrows so as to deliver the papers on the belts running as shown by the respective arrowsto the right andto the left. When it isdesiredtodeliver the aroduct from the deft-hand. folder, for
instance; to the rightehand'delivery, the fan shaft is removed fromythe left-hand folder entirely andthe fan shaft of the right hand folder istransferred together with t e fan thereon, from its bearings 40 in the righthand folder to lefthand bearings-39 in the left-hand folder. As will appear, the operation is reversedby this change and the fan delivers to the right instead of theleft;
I have shown the invention in fonmin which the folding machine 'mounted ona frame 1O which consists" of asingle casting to take. theplace of the-customary pair of;
side frames and the braces and bolts that connect them together. The bottom, four legs, and top of the frame are integral with each other. all being cast in a single piece. In these parts are cast b sses which are bored to form bearings andon the top integrally cast pair of half boxes 11 and 12 designed to be. bored out at the top and provided with caps'13 and 1%, these ii er, caps being the only parts shown in Figs that are not integrally cast in one piece.
The machine comprises the usual folding and cutting pair of cylinders and 1 which are mounted'on the. shafts located inthese Itwo bearings 11 and 12. These cylinders are drivenin the usual way and on the shalt of [the folding cylinder 15 there is a gear which gear on the fan shaft later, this fan drives a gear 1'?" on a shaft 18. On the shaft 18 is a bevel gear 29 which drives a slightly inclined shaft 21 on which is a spiral gear 22. v
This gear drives a corresponding spiral gear 23 which meshes with'anothei' gear 2%. The
gears 23 and'24 are exactly of the same size the spiral fan As will be seen I gearfv. he caused to with either of the gears or 24 and will drive the fan in opposite directions accordand are designed for d:
ill
. ing to whcther it is located in the bearings 39 constitute the drive of the machine.
with respect to each other; that is, a line drawn in this case vertically from the center hrough the nip of of the folding cylinder -t 'the rolls 19 and through the points of contact of the pitch diameters of the gears 23 and 24 will be a straight line. This line also passes through the center of the gear and the shaft on which it is mounted. The fan shaft 26 is not on this center line.
On the shaft 30 is pivoted a frame 35 comprising levers at the two ends of themachine. This frame carries the shaft 28 and it can swing from the position shown in Figs. 4 and 8 to that shownin Figs. 5 andi'i'. In its open or lower position the frame 35 comes down so that a surface on the bottom at each end rests on a cross rod 37. A cross rod 33 resting on bosses 34 cast on the frame at both ends is held in position by bolts 36.
This frame is provided at its top with a pair of supports 38 in which are mounted the two half-bearings39 and l0for the fan shaft 26. Across the frame 10 is bolted a plate 41 which carries thereon a pair of fixed half-bearings 2 nut 13 42 whichco-operate with the movable halfbearings when the frame 35 is elevated to complete them and hold the fan shaftin either pair of bearings. Onthe bearings 42 are guide pins 13 which enterfholes in the supports 38 and guide them so as to move only in a vertical direction although they are' pivoted on bolts or studs l i projecting into slots 45 in the levers 35 and capable of beingtightened to hold the'frame 35 in adjusted position. pivotal raising and lowering action of the levers and the vertical motion of the supports 38and bearings 39 and a0. These supports have slanting rails l6. on which the fan shaft 26 can be'rolled out of the units. T
The frame 35 is provided withswivel bolts: and thumbnuts 48 at the outer end adapted toengage pan of spaced rests-49 on a lug 47 bolted on the frame for the purpose of holding the frame 35 up in the position shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The usual paperguides 50 for the fan are shown mounted on frames 51 carried by the fan shaft. These frames have hooks 52 below which ,fit under the cross rod 33 to help hold in place the frames and connected parts. i 1 l T have provided the usual counting devices, comprising a counter disc 55 carried loosely on thefan shaft 26. The disc is keyed to a gear 27 driven by a pinion 28 on the shaft/28 The disc has the usual notch for receiving a roll 56 which is mounted on an'arm 57 fixed to a shaft 58 carried by the frames 51.
Thisconstruction allows for thethis shaft :is fixed an arm 59 connected by a link 60 with an arm 61 which is fixed to a the notch and rotating onthe circumference of the disc 55. It is lowered once during each rotation'of the disc in the usual manner.
The shafts 58 and 62' being mounted on the frames 51 can be removed with the fan shaft. This is indicated in Fig. 8 which shows that when the supports 38 are lowered, the hooks 52 will be brought down below and out of contact with the crossrod 33. Then the whole counting arrangement can be turned on the axis of the shaft 26 to the position shown in Fig. 8 and removed with the fan unit comprising also the guides 50.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have shown the details of the delivery. The shafts 30 are provided with delivery pulleys 72 which operate the delivery belts 31. I have numbered all the delivery belts the same number. although there are three or more series of them. Thetwo of one hand and those on the other shaft of the other hand. When the shaft at the left in Fig. 2 is rotating in the direction of the arrow the middle belts 31 will be driven in the same direction and also the whole system of belts. WVhen the products are de liver-ed in the opposite direction the same functions are performed by the opposite ratchet on the othershaft 30 in the opposite direction tothat illustrated. It will be ob vious, therefore, that the papers can be dej livered in either direction in accordance with shaft 26 with the connected parts can be the direction of rotation of the driving means without disassembling or reassembling any of the parts or connecting them up in any different way.
In the operation of the machine, thefan placed in the bearing as shown in Fig. 4,
. and the frames 35 raised as shown in Figs.
5 and 7. The bolts 48 can be fastened up by their nuts so as to hold thefan in that position. 7 Then the gear 25 meshes with the gear '24 and the fan is driven in the direction of the arrow at the right, as shown in Fig. 1.
At this time the left-hand unit can be connected up in the same way with the fan gear 25 meshing with the gear 23 of that pair, so that that fan-will be rotated in the opposite direction. Then the two delivery belts will deliver in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows. All-this is possible becausethe gear 28 on the shaft 28 will be in mesh with the gear 27 at all times.
Now if the frame 35 is lowered as shown. in Figs. -1- and 8, the fan shaft 26 can be re- 7 moved entirely as stated, or it can be put into the bearings 39 and the frame 35 raised and held up in position. In this case the gears 25 and 23 on the right-hand folder will be in mesh and the centers of the gears 23, 25 and'28 will be in a straight-line.
It :will be seen therefore, that the printed and folded products can be delivered and counted either to the right'from the righthand folder and to the left from the left h'and folder, or to the right from the left-hand folder, the right-hand folder being inoperative, or to the left from the right-hand folder, the left-hand folder being inoperative. In
other words, three different operations can be provided by lowering the frames 35 and shifting the fans from one bearing to the other, and taking out one of the fans. All this is done in this simple manner without disassembling or reassembling any of the parts of the fan or counter or even the de livery belts. f
The counter mechanism is reversed I as stated without taking it apart in any way,-
simply carrying it with the fan shaftas stated. This constitutes a very simple and efiicient means for delivering and counting papers from either of the two folders in either direction or from both of them 1n 'opwith the folder.
are all in permanentalignment. I Although I have illustrated anddescribed posite directions; It: is particularly useful in the operation of printing presses andtakes the place of the necessity for tearing down many partsfand reassembling them again whole'frame, andtlie carrying ofthe parts to make up the whole newspaper press folder,
The manufacture of the "of asingle casting, instead of usingtwo side frames fastened together with braces and bolts, is also an'iinportant feature. It is easily manufactured and shipped'an'd whenreceived at the other end the several elements f can be applied to it easily asthe bearings only a'singleform of the invention I am aware of the factthat changesand modifications can be made therein byany person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as'expressedin the.
claims.
