Serial No: 309,411. i
This invention relates to asliding door for house cars, and concerns itself with a structure which will eliminate the usual coopering required in connection'with' the loading of such cars. To this end, there is provided a side door with a wood lining, so thatcommodities such as bags of flour, sugar, oe-o ment and the like may be loaded against the door without any danger of their coming in contact with metal parts, and means are provided for bracing the door against outward thrust. v
The invention comprisesthe-novel structuraand combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined 'in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar referencenu- V merals refer to similar featuresin the diiferent views:
V Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a car embodying a door involving thisinvention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken upon the line IIII of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an'enlarged sectional view taken upon the line IIIIII of Figure 1. r Figure 4: is a sectional view taken upon the line IVIVof Figure 1.
' Figure 5 is a fragmentary part elevational j andpart detail view of a'modified form. As'illustrativeof this invention, there is i shown a sliding car doorl mounted upon a track 2 by means of rollers 3. Itis, however, immaterial whether the door is supported upona lower ;or upper track. This door consists of an outer sheet metal. panel i which, in the present instance, is shown as corrugated, and an inner lining of wood 5. A plurality of vertical thrust resisting members 6 somewhat in the form of channel bars are secured to the sheet metal panel of the door and extend above and below the door. The upper and lower terminals. of these members are'inwardlyoffset, as indicated at Bar. Upon theupper side plate 7 of the car there are a plurality of; keepers 8 which are spaced apart-the samedistance as fabove 12'is provided with a groove or' lodgement this-invention; 1 -In-the modified form shown in Figure" 5,:
door isslidably confined in asu'itable guidel way 10 formed by attaching an] angle-bar 11 to the side plate 7-wl1ich is shown in the form ofaZbar. In the present instance, the door 1 is illustrated at the corner of'thecar and cooperat; i-ng with a :swinga'ble rear door 12, which is looked in position by a swingable, bar 13lengaging-{under suitable keepers- 14: and 15 and below-such door. I The 'rea'rdoor 16 for receiving the front-edge of the'slidand for preventingoutwardthrust; It will, however, be appreciatedithat'the invention is not liinited to corner doors. i P
The 7 bars 6' and keepers 8 and ads such that the terminals of the bars Gare under the keepers when the door 1 is closed'and accordinglyresist any outward thrust of" uch; doors when material: is loaded against the door, and,
ring door 1, for 'we atherpl'ioofing purposes arrangement of thethrust resisting Q as the door has a wood lining, the material will notcom'e in contact'withth'e metal; consequently,'-there is notneed to cooper. acarwhenvthe" doors are construct the thrust resistingfbars-fi are showniwithhook shaped ends 17, which engage hook shaped guiding keepers 181 The ends of the c hooks ion-the guide 18 maybe bevelled so as to slopejjust as" the keepers 9, as indicated at 19, consequently the thrust -bars'6maya lso; serve'astieing members withfrespectto partsv Ofvthecarb. o
fd'accordingto Apparently'as the thrust' resisting member 6 upontheri'ght pass under the right'hand keepers 89, when hand side of the door must the door is,opened,;these keepers slopeiin 7' an inner a'rcuate surface. f
both directions, or in other'WQifids they have l/Ve' are aware thatfmanyj chang es maybe made and numerous [detailsfof construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.-
We claim asour invention: 7 I 1. The combination with a door. having vertical thrust-resisting 'members spaced a material distance from the vertical margins of the door, and keepers above and below said door under'which said members pass when said door is closed for resisting the outward thrust thereof. r 2. In a house car having ardoorway,a slidl ing doormounted in said doorway, vertical thrustiresisting members upon said door,'and keepers having sloping surfaces adjacent the margins of said doorway adapted for receiving the ends .of said-members when said door isclosed. 3. In a house car having a doorway, a sliding door, mounted in said doorway, said door comprising an outer metalpanel and an innerpwooden lining, vertical thrust resisting members secured to said metal panel, and keepers adjacenttheupper and lower margins ,of said door. under which the ends of said members passwhen the door is closedfor resisting the outwardthrust thereof. 3O 1-. In a house oar having a. doorway, a sliding door mounted in: said doorway, a plurality of bars secured-to said door and extending above and below the ends'thereof, and keepers with sloping surfaces adjacent the upper-and lower margins of saiddoorway under which the ends ofsaid bars are adapted to extend whensaid door is closed for resisting the outward thrust thereof. 1
'5, In a house'car having a doorway, a. door for closing said .doorway, a thrust resisting member upon saiddoor. and'spaced substan tially. from themargins thereof and keepersadjacent the marginsof said doorway under which said thrust resisting members are adapted to pass whenthe door is closed for: resisting the outward thrust thereof. a
6.. In a" house car-having a doorway, a' door for closing said doorway,;thrust;res ist- .ing members upon said. door and having i hook shaped ends, and keepers uponthe car under whichsaid hook shaped ends engage.
. 7. As. an articleof manufacture, a car door consisting of anouter sheet metal panel and a wooden lining,.a-nd thrustresisting members secured to said metal' panel. 1
: 8.. As ani article of. manufacture, a car door consisting of an outer sheet metal panel and an inner. wooden lining, and vertical thrust'resistin'g members extending co-exten- 7 so; .sive with the door secured to the metal panel.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. I e 7 THEODORE H. GOODNOW. KENNETH J TOBIN.
