Steiner Patent No. 1,596,125, issued August 17, 1926, and I am makingno' claim in this application to this construction except in combination with the novel features of the control mechanism which I; willnow proceedfto'describe in' detail. y The controlmechanism, bv meansof which the feed of the towel isregulated, is preferably located on thelouter side walljof the cabiprovidedfwith'j'a pinion. 13. ,,A gear 14; is
loosely mounted on astiid 15 that is secured at 16 in the wallof the cabinet. Anfidle'pim ion 17 is interposed between the gear 14 and the pinionf13. ,The gear and the'pinion turn counter clock-wise while the idle pinion 17 revolves clock-wise in the operation of the device. Aplate'2l is ivoted at 22 onthe wail:
of the cabinet and, as. adog 23 ada ted to enter one ofthenotches 20'and lock t e ring and gear against movement inJeitherdirecn-.
The notches [20 in the ring :18 0operating with ,the .dog 23 determines the, degree of roroll and the length of clean towel that is de} livered" with each operation; a This wiping,
length of clean web may be increased byproviding a larger ring and a' greater distance between the adjacentnotches; Experiment and practice has, however, demonstrated that thenotches shown in the drawing are a suit? able distance 'a'p'art for delivery or a proper length of clean towel. s
Aratchet type of dog 24' is also provided to backward movement and the rewinding or backward winding of the towelfwebinto the cabinet; 7 A spring 2 5, normally'holds the dog 23 in engagementwith'one' of the notches 20.
I i I erative for the purposedesigned. encircled by an annular recess 19 and said the do An arm 26 is loosely mounted at one end on the stud 15 and a coil spring 27 has one end secured in the stud and its other end in engagement with the arm, the spring having a coils loosely encircling the stud and permitting oscillation of the armg for a limited distance on the stud, the tension of the spring normally tending to hold the arm in its raised position as indicated in Figure 2. a The outer end of the arm 26 has a lateral extension 28 on which a hand lever 29 is pivoted at 30. A
and a coil spring 40 connects this wing with J theinner portion of 'the arm 26- and normally tends to hold the lever29'in contact with the.
wiping purposes, the, user will grasp the lever 29 andtilt itfrom the, dotted line 'polever will-release theg'ear by disengaging may i 'he desires, I p towel and pullingt ereon, rotate'the gear sition in Figur 3 to the full line position i i :in the same figure. This movement of the tation of the gear, the movement of the feed 23 from its notch 20 andflthe user I rasp the web of clean and'deliver the web of clean towel untilthefl dog 23 reaches the next notch 20 in the ring 18 when'movement of the gear and the feed roll will'be positively checked;v It is intendedthat the user should continue his grasp ,of the lever 29" and operate the mechanism 1 by moving the side 31inwardly on the arm 26 until its teeth meshes with the teeth of the a gear, and the'reupon continued movement of the lever willrotate the; gear and the feedrollfor a limited distance, depending u on. a
the space between the'notches 20 in the ring 18. 'In case, however, the user having released the 'gear' by. the.- initial operation of thelever 29, should thereupon remove his hand from the lever 'and attempt to oper-.
ate the cabinet byipulling-on the towel web he willbe able to obtaina certain length ,0
clean :web and nomore, as'the feed mecha nism will be positively locked as soon asthe =dog' 23'entcrs the next notch in the ring. If
1 the user retainshis'grasp on-the lever, its" continued. movement through the engagement of the dog 31'-With the gear, will ro-" tatethe gear counter clockwise and through thepinions 13 and .17 will revolve the feedrolLand begin the delivery of a web ofv the clean towel. This delivery will be positively checked as soon as the dog 23 drops into the next" notch in the ring, Thus a user while he may deliver the towel either by grasping the lever to operatethe feed roll or by pulling on theiweb after release of the roll cannot in either case feed out more than a suitable wiping length with each. operation..
It is desirable in-a cabinet of this kind that provision be made to from returning the operating lever to its normal position until .it has first completed its downward stroke anda properlength of towel hasbeen delivered. To prevent the return of the lever before it has completed its full stroke, I provide a curved cam or flange 42 on the wall ofthe cabinet in position toengage a lug 43 on the wing extension 39.
This lug is so positioned that when-the lever has engaged the dog 3I'with the gear and the rotation :of the gear begins and with it the feedofthe'clean towel, the, lug 43fwill ride on the upper face ofthecam 42rand will continue in engagement with this cam-until the lever has nearly completed its downward stroke. "At a predetermined point in the downward movement of the lever,.the lug 43 will pass .outzof engagement withthe upper face of thecam and release of the lever will-allow the spring 40 to movethe dog 31 outof engagemenflwith the gear and there-- uponbackward movement of'the lever toqits normalposition is permitted without afi'ect: ingthe gear or the feed roll operativelycon nected therewith. Backward movement, of
the ear and'a corresponding movementof the eed roll will be prevented by the engage-- ment of the dog 24 withthe teeth of.the gear; The tilting of thelever 29 through thepower of the spring 40 and thedisengagement-ofthe dog 31 from the gear teeth will-move the lug 43 to a position where it will-be on the. under side of the cam42 and a in this position'it will be impossible forthe. user of the cabinet to tilt the lever: downward again and re-engage the do 31 with the teeth of the gear '14 until -t e lug 43-has passed out from under the'cam and this will not occur until the lever reaches a predeprevent the user terminedipoint in its upwardorfreturnstroke. Itwill be understood that after the initial movement of the :lever and the release of the-gear, if the user releases the lever-and; I
1 pulls "on 1 the towel, web instead of operating the lever as-intended a certain length of towel will be delivered and the operating lever and its connections will move with-the gear. to the-limitiof its. downward stroke. 5 hus, if a personwho has been accustomed to vgrasping the towel weband pulling it out. of the, cabinet attempts to operate this cabinetin a similar .manner,'-he' may doseas soon as hehas released the delivery mechl "but he cannot obtain'a greater length of. *towel web "thanhewould have if he had re tained his grasp on the ,operatingi'lever-and 1 moved it to the limit of its downwardstroke. Hence, with this cabinet, a user may obtain a certain length .of towel web. by the 'manipulation of the operating lever alone,or after 1- anism-by the initial-movement;of the lever releasingthe mechanism,by the movement of the leverhefca'n. obtain the same length of clean web and:
no more .by pulling on the towel :web. 5 o
- 1 The rotation thegear'l l andithefeedof 5;
thetowel with each stroke of the lever, will be governed: by the distance between the e notchesa 20 on the ring 18, the lug'23sliding on the peripheral surface of the ring, and Y when it has been disengaged-from one'notch,
it will-be held against the ring by the tension of the spring-25xuntil' theldog reaches the next notchand when it dro s into this notch,
the gear will belockedan it will "be necess position in Figure2 by'the tension-of the sary to return the lever 29. w its initial-raised v 5 position before the gearecan be released. again. -The return of the lever-29 to :thedotted line a position shown in Figure 3,- and the fullline i05 v spring-40, will allow the .wing extension 39 to pass under the lug .4l'a's indicatedby full lines to its normal: raised position. He must depress the lever and the arm26to thepositionindicated by full lines in Figure 5, and
when this'has been done, a predetermined length of clean towel will have been fed out ofthe cabinet, and he cannotobtain a greater length bypulling on the towel web. The'user cannot at any point in the up-stroke of the lever, re -engage the dog31 with the gear, assuch movement is positively-prevented by the en agement of thelug 43-withthe under l face 0 the cam 42. Hence, an idle upward stroke of the lever is necessary to return it to its initial working position, and when the lug on-vthe leverfpasses out of engagement with the-cam so that .thedog 31 may be reengaged with the" gear, the wingextension 39 .will be under the: lug 41f in position toagain release the gear-as soon as'the lever-is operated.-
