This invention. relates to savings banks, the subject matter of this application constituting a divisionof my pending application Serial No. 277,978, filed May 15, 1928. The invention which is concerned more particularly with that type of coinsavings bank which simulates in miniature a book, one cover of which is represented by a hinged closure; for the bank casing, has for its general object and purpose to provide an improved locking means for the closure and simple and reliable means for rigidly connecting the front edge wall of the bank casing together with an enclosing housing for the lockfmech anism to a cover on the closed side a of the bank'casing.
It is a-more particular object of the invention to provide one of the cover members with an angular sheet metal strip rigidly attached to one side thereof and bent to provide sections representing the book leaves at the front and opposite end edges of the bank, the corresponding edge walls of the bank casing adapted to be engaged againstthe inner faces 25,. of said strip sections, and a lock housing po-' sitioned, against the inner face of the front wall of the casing, said strip sections having their upper edges turned inwardly and clinched overthe edges of the casingwall and upon the upper edge of the lock housing whereby the parts are securely held in assembled relatio Itis also. another feature of the invention to, provide the bottom wall of the bankcas- 35. ing with means to. coact with theinner Wall of thelockhousing and hold the latter against displacement relative to the casing walls. lVith theaboveand other objects in View,

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 and 6 respectively, designate the two cover sections of the case, each of which consists of a facing sheet of ornamental flexible material attached to a sheet of metal or other suitable stiffening material, the two cover sections being flexibly connected across the back of the bank by a portion of the covering material.,
Upon the inner face of the cover member 5 a sheet metal strip of angular form in cross section is rigidly secured or attached, said strip being bent to provide the angularly extending sections 7, 8 and 9 which are disposed inwardly of one longitudinal edge of the cover member 5 and the oppositeend edges thereof and extend in parallel relation therewith. The particular means for attaching this metal strip to the cover member constitutes no essential feature of the present invention. The flanges of this strip'project at right angles to the plane of the cover member and their outer faces are suitably treated or decorated to represent the edges of book leaves. r
The; body of the, bank casing generally designated at 10 is adapted to be arranged within the strip sections 7, 8 and 9, and the bottom wall thereof, suitably attached to the stiffening plate of the cover member 5. The,
front and end marginal walls of this casing body fit closely against the inner faces of the metal strip sections '7, 8 and 9 on the cover member.
There is also arranged at the inner side of the front wall 11 of the casing body 10 a channel shaped metal strip indicated at 12 which encloses the lock mechanism to be later described. The channel of this strip is closed at its open side by the wall 11 of the casing and the upper or top portion of the lock hous ing 12 has its wall vertically extended in contact with the inner face of the casing wall 11 as indicated at 13.
As shown at 1 1, the free longitudinal edge of the metal strip section 7 on the cover 5- is turned inwardly over the edges of the easing wall 11 and the extension 13 of the lock housing wall and is securely clinched against the inner face of the latter.
As an additional means of security for the lock housing, I also preferably provide the bottom wall of the casing body 10 with spaced upwardly struck portions 15 which closely engage against the inner wall of the lock housing, 'as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
To the back or rear wall of the casing body 10, the closure plate 16 is hinged as shown at 17. As indicated, the other longitudinal edge of this closure plate and the opposite end edges thereof are provided with angularly projecting flanges which have spaced notches to receive fastening lugs 18 projecting from the stiffening plate of the cover member 6. However, any other desired means may be utilized for attaching closure plate 6 to this cover member. The outer longitudinal edge of this plate is provided with spaced angularly projecting locking fingers or hooks 19 which are adapted to cooperate with the lock bolt mounted in the housing 12.
Upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that the lock bolt 20 likewise consists of a channel shaped metal strip snugly fitting within the channel shaped housing 12 for longitudinal sliding movement relative thereto, the open side of the bolt channel being opposed to the casing wall 11. The upper or top wall of the bolt housing 12 is provided with spaced elongated openings 21 therethrough, and at corresponding points,
the top flange of the bolt 20 is cut away to provide an end edge indicated at 22 spaced from one end of each of the slots 21.
One end of the housing 12 abuts against a similar housing indicated at 23 secured against the inner face of one of the end walls of the casing body 10 and within which coin guard means (not shown) is housed. A coil spring indicated at 2 1 is interposed between the end of the housing 28 and the lock bolt 20 and acts upon the latter to yieldingly hold the the same against sliding movement in one direction relative to the housing 12.
While various types of lock mechanisms might be employed, as one practical example, I have shown the channel form of lock bolt 20, the inner vertically disposed wall of which is centrally provided with a longitudinally elongated opening 25 therein and a lug 26 at the upper edge of this opening projecting into the channel of the bolt. The front wall 11 of the casing body and the wall of the bolt housing 12 are provided with aligned openings therein in which the opposite reduced ends of the lock cylinder 27 are rotatably journalled. This cylinder has a slot or groove 28 cut in one side thereof adapted to register with a horizontal slot 29 in the casing wall 11. These re istering slots are adapted to receive a suitable key, after insertion of which, the lock cylinder 27 may be rotated and the ward of the key engaged with the lug 26 to shift the lock bolt. As will be readily understood when said bolt is thus shifted against the action of the spring 24, the top flange of the bolt is disengaged from the hooks or lugs 19 on the closure member, whereupon the latter may be swung to the open position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. As an additional guide means for the locking bolt, I may provide the front wall of the casing with one or more inwardly struck lugs 29 extending over the lower flange of the lock bolt 20. I may further provide this front wall 11 of the casing with the inwardly punched loops 30 which receive and guide the hooks 19 as the closure member 16 is moved to its closed position.
From the above description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction of my present invention as well as its several advantages will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have produced a device of this kind which is of very substantial construction, and in which the several parts may be easily and quickly assembled and rigidly secured in fixed relation to each other without necessitating the use of rivets, solder or other auxiliary securing or fastening means. In other words, the essential and distinguishing feature of my present disclosure resides in the provision of the metallic strip on the back cover member having its outer surface finished to represent the leaves of a book and provided with means whereby the body casing of the bank as well as the housing for the lock mechanism may be easily and rigidly fixed in position with relation to the cover member.
This construction greatly reduces the labor costs in assembling the several parts and also permits, when the outer faces of the metal strip representing the book leaves become badly dulled or worn, of the removal of said strip and the substitution of a new one While retaining, the original bank casing. Therefore, the device may be maintained in an attractive condition practically indefini-tely and at very low additional cost.
I have herein shown and described an embodiment of my present improvements, which I have found satisfactory in practical use. It will nevertheless, be understood that the essential features of the invention might also be incorporated in various other alternative structural forms, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a rectangular casing body and a closure therefor hinged upon one marginal wall of the casing body, flexibly connected covers for said casing body and the closure, a metal strip attached to the cover for the casing body having angularly disposed portions representing the side and end edges of book leaves, said casing body having its other marginal walls engaged with the inner faces of said angular portions of the metal strip, and each of said metal strip portions having integrally formed meansi releasably engaging said body walls of the casing to rigidly and detachably secure said casing body and the cover member in fixed relation to each other.
2. In combination with a rectangular casing body and a closure therefor hinged upon one marginal wallof the casing body, flexibly connected covers for said casing body and the closure, a metal strip attached to the cover for'the casing body having angularly disposed portions representing the side and end edges of book leaves, said casing body having its other marginal walls engaged with the inner faces of said angular portions of the metal strip, and each section of said metal strip having an edge thereof inwardly turned over the edge of one marginal wall of the casingbody and clinched against the inner face thereof to rigidly and detachably secure said casing body and the cover member in fixed relation to each other.
3. In combination with a rectangular casing body and a closure therefor hinged upon one marginal wall of the casing body, flexibly connected covers for said casing body and the closure, a metal strip attached to the cover for the casing body having angularly disposed portions representing the side and end edges of book leaves,-said casing body having its other marginal walls engaged with the inner faces of said angular portions of the metal strip, locking means and a housing therefor arranged at the inner side of the marginal wall of the casing body opposite to said closure, and said sections of the metal strip having integrally formed means releasably engaged with the walls of the casing body and with a part of said housing to rigidly secure the casing body and lock housing in relatively fixed posit1oiis with respect to said cover member.
4. In combination with a rectangular cascover for the casing body having angularly disposed portions representing the side and end edges of book leaves, said casing body having its other marginal walls engaged with the inner faces of said angular portions of the metal strip, lock mechanism for said closure arranged at the inner side of the marginal wall of the casing body opposite to the closure and a housing for said lock mechanism having a flange extension engaged with the inner face of said marginal Wall of the casing-"1 body, and the metal strip section on said cover member contacting with said casing wall having an edge portion inwardly turned over the edge of said casing wall and the flange of the lock housing and clinched upon the latter to? fixedly retain said parts in assembled relation and detachably secure the same in connection with said cover member.
5. In combination with a rectangular casing body and a closure therefor hinged upon one marginal wall of the casing body, flexibly connected covers for said casing body and the closure, a metal strip attached to the cover for the casing body having angularly disposed portions representing the side and end edges of book leaves, said casing body having its other marginal walls engaged with the inner faces of said angular portions of the metal strip, lock mechanism for said closure arranged at the inner side of the marginal walls of the casing body opposite to the closure and a housing for said lock mechanism having a flange extension engaged with the inner face of said marginal wall of the casing body, the

tacting with said casing wall having an edge portion inwardly turned over the edge of said casing wall and the flange of the look housing and clinched upon the latter to fixedly retain said parts in assembled relation and de tachably secure the same in connection With said cover member, and the body Wall of said casing having spaced inwardly struck portions coacting with one wall of said lock housing to prevent displacement thereof relative to the casing wall.
6. In combination with a rectangular casing body having a hinged closure, covers extending over the outer side of the bottom wall of the casing body and the closure and simu lating the binding of a book, and a metal strip having angularly disposed portions repre senting the side and end edges of book leaves engaged upon the outer faces of one of the side and opposite end marginal walls respectively of the casing body, each portion of said. metal strip having a flange on its lower edge extending inwardly between the bottom Wall of the casing body and the cover therefor, and the upper edge of each of the metal strip portions being inwardly turned over the upper edge of the marginal Wall of the casing body to retain said metal strip in'essembled relation with the casing Walls.
