This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and parasols and the main object is to provide a simple, detachable and highlyattractive as well as useful auxiliary cover 7 as hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a top view of an opened umbrella with my improved cover means in position. Fig. 2 is an approximately radial cross section of Fig. 1 in enlarged scale, about as on line 22 in said latter figure. 1 Referring to the drawing by reference letters, I have illustrated particularly in Fig. 1 an umbrella, parasol or the like of the type having a cover of six cloth panels A sewed together on the radial lines B, each said seam being normally over one of the umbrella ribs C. There are of course in this instance eight such ribs C but my improvements are not limited to an umbrella of this number of panels only, being equally adaptable to umbrellas of variable designs. D is the usual umbrella stick on which is the regular flanged collar E slidable longitudinally' on the stick and pivotally connected to rib-braces F'which in turn are also pivoted to the ribs C as at G, thus to open or close the cover frame as the collar E is manipulated. H is the usual fixed upper collar on stick D and in which are pivotally fixed the inner ends of the ribs 0, the stick extending beyond said latter collar to provide the usual tip D2 exteriorly of the umbrella cover. i

In my improved umbrella-'means the tip D2 is provided preferably with threads T at its base to receive a correspondingly threaded tip-cap J which is provided with a circular flange J2 atrits base part, said flange pro- 49 vided with suitable apertures for sewing or stitching the central part of the cover A thereto as at J3in Fig. 1.

In my improved umbrella the tips of ribs G are provided each with an elongated preferably ornamental rib-tip C2 suitably retained on the rib end and each tip having a downwardly and outwardly directed shoulder C3. This shoulder is frictionally engaged by a small ring B (Fig. 2) which is attached to the rim of cover A one at each seam end B. As above described it will now be readily seen that the main cover'A is retained centrally on the central cap flange J 2 and its perimetral parts are engaged with the rib tips 02 by means of the rings R. Said main cover is thus removable by simply slipping the rings R outwardly and off of the tip members, then unscrewing the cap J and the entire cover is readily slipped off and may be replaced by another cover. The cover A is preferably but not necessarily rain-proof and may be of any suitable color or design, in fact a set of covers of variable colors, or combinations of colors and designs may be available for any umbrella frame of a given size.

K is an auxiliary, preferably ornamental top cover corresponding to the main cover as to general dimensions and construction ex cept that its perimeter is smaller and thus of 7 course s aced inwardly of the main cover edging Fsee Fig. 1) and furthermore it is preferably secured by light stitches to the main cover preferably atthe radial seams B, as at K2.

The central aperture of this cover is also stitched at J3 to the threaded tip J. Just outwardly of each brace joint G, a ring M may be fixed to the inner side of cover A, one such ring provided to engage each rib C. These rings are of the type which may be spread or sprung open to be disengaged from the rib. I

It will now be clearly understood that my detachable cover embodies a number of at-' tractive and useful features. The cover A alone may be the only one used for ornamental eifect of any suitable material and may be used auxiliary to the usual rain cover of an umbrella (not shown). The auxiliary cover K is optional in combination with cover A, or it may be omitted. A deep colored cover A and a differently colored auxiliary cover K provides for a combination of color and design effects as the user of the umbrella may choose. Pattern material may also be used with striking effect not only attractive to the eye but to match or correspond with colors and patterns of other articles of cloth ing w r by the user. Thu?- Fhe adap ability of my improved umbrella means besides its practical construction and use is apparent.
