My present invention concerns rods such as are used for fishing or angling, and relates more particularly or especiall to improved and novel means for holding t e reel detachably or demountably thereon, and pertains also to a new way of securing the first or innermost rod-section in the handle socket provided therefor, such fastened rod element maintaining or looking the reel-securing means in active position or relation.

To permit those skilled in this art vto understand the invention full both from structural and functional stan points, a present preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and to which reference should be had, and, for simplicity, like reference numerals have been employed throughout the several views to designate the same parts.

Referring to such drawing, it will be observed that the handle for the rod comprises a casting 11 havinga roughened shank 12 on which the usual cork or other handle proper 13 is mounted in the customary manner, the central portion 14 of the casting being depressed or dropped and having a hookshaped finger-piece 15 depending from its underside. v

The top face of the middle section 14 has a shallow, longitudinal channel 16 affording a seat for the base 17 of a reel 18 of ordinary structure, one endof such base being adapted to be received or accommodated in a cavity or the somewhat tapered reel-base of slightly pocket 19 provided for that purpose at one 1929. increasing thickness toward its middle part directly under the center of the reel, or such base may be arched slightly longitudinally to produce substantially the same effect.

When such lock or holder 20 occupies this position, it reliably keeps the reel in correct relation to the rod, permitting its detachment or demounting whenever necessary by merely movin the part 20 along until the base is released orfreed.

The front, elevated portion 21-of the casting has a round hole 22 extended all the way through it, and the forward, terminal part of the section 21 is likewise slotted at a plurality of points 23, and is externally tapered and screw-threaded at 24 and equipped with an externally-knurled, internally-threaded compression-ring 25 screwed thereon.

A cavity or passage 22 is rovided to accommodate or receive the en portion of the first rod-section 26, the end of which, during insertion of the section in its socket, engages an upstanding lug or abutment 27 using from and forming part of the lock 20, where by the latter is pushed along by the rod element into reel-base securing relation.

Thus, the fitting of the rod member in the handle at the same time eifects the locking of the reel-base to the handle by the travel of the member 20 into fastening or securing position.

Such introduction of the rod-section into its cavity or socket is effected while the ring 25 is backed away on the threads 24, and, after the rodsection has been pushed fully home, as shown in the drawing, the ring is screwed up, compressing or contracting the slotted portion of the handle inwardly on to the rodsection, thereby assuring that it can not become accidentally or unintentionally displaced, the rod-section, thus locked, making certain that the reel and itsbase cannot become undesignedly released or loosened.

To allow demounting of the reel, the ring is turned to permit the part 24 to expand sufficiently to allow withdrawal of the rod-section from the handle, which action, of course, frees or liberates the reel-base lock, whereupon the reel may be taken ofi with ease anddispatch.

Theiinvention, as defined by the appended claims, is obviously not limited or restricted to the precise or exact details of structure illustrated and described, and these may be 5 modified within radical limits without departure from the heart and essence of the invention and without the loss or sacrifice of any of its material or substantial benefits or advantages. 7

10 I claim:

1. In a fishing-rod, the combination of a handle having a seat for a reel-base and a slotted, externally tapered and threaded, apertured portion designed to receive a rod-section in said aperture, an internallythreaded ring fitted over and co-operating with the threads of said portion and adapted to contract said portion on to said rod-section to lock the latter in said go aperture, and a lock slidable on said handle to fasten a reel-base thereon, said locked rodsection co-operating with said reel-base lock to maintain the latter in looking relation with said base.

2. In a fishin -rod, the combination of a handle having a depressed central part with a seat for a reel-base and an elevated, slotted, externally tapered and threaded, apertured, terminal portion designed to receive a rodsection in said aperture, an internally-threaded ring fitted over and co-operating with the threads of said portion and adapted to con tract said portion on to said rod-section to lock the latter in said aperture with a part protruding therefrom and overlying said depressed central part of the handle, and a lock slidable on said depressed central part of said handle to fasten a reel-base thereon, said 7 locked rod-section co-operating with an upstandin lug on said reel-base lock to main- Zain suc lock in securing relation with said ase.

3. In a fishing-rod, the combination of a handle having a depressed central part with 5 a seat for a reel-base and an elevated apertured terminal portion designed to demountably receive a rod-section in its a erture, a rod-section adapted to fit in sai aperture with its end protruding therefrom, and a lock slidable on said depressed central part of the handle to fasten a reel-base thereon, said projecting end of said rod-section being designed to engage said lock to hold it in reelbase securing position.
