DELAWARE i TOILE T SEAT Application med November 11, 1927,'seria1 Ne. 232,627?. Renewed septeaber `12, 1930.
My invention relates to toilet seats, and more particularly to hinges therefor.
An object of my invention is to provide a toilet seat having a hinge which is concealed from view when the seat is inlowered posi tion and which therefore has" an especially attractive appearance.
4vAnother obj ect of the invention is to provide a seat and hinge of this type with concealed devices for checking the movement of the seat so that it may be held in an elevated and rearwardly inclined position.
@ther objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
Referring to the-drawings:
Fig. l is a top plan viewV of a seat embodying my invention;` l
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the rear of such a seat, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the seatattached to a closet bowl, which is shown in dotted lines,
the seat being shown in raised position in dotted lines.
My preferred embodiment comprises a core l, preferably made of laminated wood. In the rear of the core is an insert madeof cast -iron or similar material. A portion of the insertis embedded in the core, this portion v being in the form of a iat plate 3, preferably roughened or corrugated as shown to in'- crease its area of vcontact and consequent gripping power. Adjacent the plate 3 is a shoulder 4 which abuts snugly against the rear of the core. Rearwardly extending from the shoulder is a shellhaving a top 5 and sides 6 in which are formed aligned apertures 7. The top portion is curved downwardly in back to form a rear portion 8.
A coating 9 of rubber, a phenolic condensation product, or a similar plastic material extends continnousl insert.
Standards 10 having threaded posts 11 are secured to a closet bowl l2 and extend upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, into the cavity defined by the shell and have pintles 14 thereon which extend into the apertures o 7 in the insert.
y over the entire core and` .The seat ymay be movedv to,l a Vposition slightly beyond the vertical, at which point 'the vvcurved rear portion 8 of the shell will abut against'the standards, thus checking the'rotationof theseat. 4 f
In constructing the preferred embodiment 'ofthe invention, the 'core lisbuilt up of laminated wood and shape'dtothe form of'a toilet seat. An opening is cnt i'n the rear and the 4 plate 34 of the insert driven therein.. A coatf ingof rubber or other plastic, material is'then molded overthe core 4and thelprojecting shell-like portion of thefinse'rt, and, in the case of rubber, vulcanizedthereon- It 'will readily be seen vthat a seat embodye ing my `invention.will be unusually attra-ci tive in appearance because of the fact that l a perfectly: smooth `surface is exposedwhen the seat` is lowered, withno hinge elements in j view'. v Such a. structure is also obviously highly sanitary. l
My invention may forms. rFor example, the core 'may be madeA of ground'oorl, woodshavings, or of various" kinds of: fiber 'held together by afsuit'able binder, or shoddy rubber, coated asabovedescribed. lOr, the seat may be nfioldeda]` solid unit'oflplastic material.)V
Otherj modifications Vwill come within the spirit of myinvention as defined by the ap-V pended claims, and'l do i ed to the 'embodiments described.
