DOOR OPENING DEVICE Filed April 22, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Dec. 9, w MILLER DOOR OPENING DEVICE Filed April 22, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Irma/m ll//////// Patented Dec. 9, 1930 PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM MILLER, OF RITZVILLE, WASHINGTON noon-ornmlve nnvrcn Application filed April 22, 1930. Serial No. 446,378.
This invention relates to devices for openin'g doors and more particularly to devices for opening doors of motor vehicles or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of this character by which a door may be opened by a foot pedal or the like.
Another object of this invention is to pro- Vide a device which may be readily positioned within the frame of a door of a motor vehicle and which will not interfere with the mechanism for raising or lowering the glass positioned within the frame.
A further object of this invention is to provide in combination with a foot pedal,
means for facilitating the opening of the door particularly where a door is liable to stick or bind within the frame.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in sec t'ionof a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention mounted on a vehicle; Figure 2 is a perspective view of thetrip ping or-operating member;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view partly in detail of a. modification ofthe tripp ne member;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line t4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary detail. elevation partly in section of the connecting link.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several'views, the numer-al 1O designates generally a door opening '45 or sash which may be of any size desired and which may be positioned in the frame of a motor vehicle or the like, and the numeral 11 designates generally a door frame which is hinged as at 12 to the sash 10. The door frame 11 may be provided with a slidable glass 13 which is adapted to move longitudinally within the frame 11. V i p The door frame 11 is adapted to be held in closed position by a latch member lwhich is slidably mounted in the frame 11, the outer end of the latch being adapted to engage in the conventional keeper or the like 15'which is mounted in the door sash. The inner end of the keeper 14 is adapted to be slidably mounted in a block or the like16, and i's'constantly urged by an expanding spring 17.
A knob or handle 18 may be pivotally mounted in the door frame 11, and the knob 18 may be provided with an angularly inclinedportion 19 which isadapted to engage against a. pin or lug 20 which is carried by the bolt let sothat the bolt it may be moved longitudinally within the frame 11 and the block 16. p 2
An equalizer 21is secured intermediate the ends thereof as at 22 to the bolt 14: and extends upwardly through a slot or opening 23in the door stile 24, the upwardly extending portion 25 of the equalizer providing a handle by means of which the bolt 14 may be moved horizontally within the door frame. The door frame 11 is also provided with an inwardly extending block or lug 26 which is adapted to contact with the equalizer 21 intermediate the ends thereof.
The lower end of the equalizer21 is pivotally or rockably secured to a door opening member or plunger 27 by means of a bolt or the like 28 and if desired, the plunger 27 may be restricted as at 29 so as to rockably receive thebifurcated lower end portion 30 of the equalizer 21. The plunger 27 is adapted to have horizontal movement within the frame 11, and one end thereof is provided with an inclined portion 31 which is adapted to engage against an inclined plate 32 carried bythe sash 10, the inclined portion 31 facilitating or forcing the door to move into opened position when the plunger 27 is moved toward the open end of the door.
A spring member 33 may be positioned about the plunger 27 intermediate the equalizer 21 and the free end of the door frame 11 so as to constantly urge the plunger inwardly of the door frame. The opposite end of the plunger 27 extends outwardly of the frame as at'34, and thesash is provided with a slottedportion 35 soias to loosely receive the extension 34. r
; A plunger-engaging member 2 36 may be hinged to the door' sash 10, the plunger en'gag ing member 36, having a depending portion 37 which extends loosely within the slot 35 and'is adapted to contact with the 'inner end of the plunger 27. If desired, the plunger engaging member 36 may. be-Jmountedon the-J;
floor of the vehicle and a horizontally movable rod or extension 38 secured thereto and ada ted for contact with the innerend 34 of t e plunger 27 so that when the plungerenga lng member 36 is rocked,,theplunger 27 w ll be moved outwardly thereby forcing I the inclinedouter end31 thereof against the inclined ,plate'32 carried by the door sash and coactivel-y rockingfthe equalizer 21 and moving the door bolt 34 inwardly of tllQ'dOOI the hinges 12.
Inthe operation of this device, the door frame 11 may be closed in the conventional manner, the bolt 14 holding thedoor in closed I position. When it is desired to open the door If desired, the bolt [from the interior of the vehicle, the member .36 maybe rocked thereb moving the plunger 27 horizontally within t e frame 11 and causing the outer end. thereof to strike the inclined plate 32. cooperatively with the horizontal movement ofthe'plunger 27, the equalperson onfthe outsidejof the vehicles desires to enter,ethe handle 18 maybe'rocked thereby bringing the egrtension 19 into contact with the pin 20 on the bolt 14. It will be obvious that the movement of the door bolt by means of the handle orthe knob 18 will cause. the bolt to move independently of the plunger 217 inasmuch as the link or equalizer 21 will berockedonthe pivot 28. It will be noted irom the foregoing that the d'oor'frame 11 may be swung into opened position from vari-. ous positions within or withoutthe vehicle. It will, of'course, be understood that Various changes'and modifications, may be made in the details of construction, and v desi of the above specificall described embodiment of this invention wit out departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restrictedonly by the scope of the fol.- lowing claims.)
