The invention relates to valve actuating mechanism particularly adapted for use in connection with burglar repelling devices, and has for its object to provide a device of 5 this character wherein a valve is held in open movement of the valve stem and valve to open position, said arms will move to an angular position for holding the valve in open position, the spring also forming means whereby upon movement of the valve and valve stem to closed position, and the arms to an opposed relation to the first mentioned angular position, said spring will hold the valve and valve stem in closed position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing wherein a single figure shows an elevation of the device, partly in section, the numeral 8 designates a discharge pipe which may lead to any suitable source of liquid supply, which discharge pipe at its upper end terminates in a valve casing 9, in the lower end of the chamber 10 of which is a valve seat 11, with which the valve 12 engages for preventing discharge or" liquid when not desired. Connected to the valve casing 9 is a discharge tube 13, which discharge tube is adapted to lead to any suitable source of discharge, for instance adjacent a paying tellers window, which is adapted to be positioned, whereby liquid discharged therefrom will be projected towards a burglar or hold-up man. Threaded into the upper end of the casing 9 is a cap 15, in which is fslidably mounted a vertically disposed valve stem 16, and which valve stem terminates adjacent the lower end of the lower solenoid 17 and is provided with a yoke connection 18 with the core rod 19 within the solenoid. The core rod 19 is provided with a core 20, which is controlled by the lower solenoid 17 and with a core 21 which is controlled by the upper solenoid 22, and it will be noted with the parts shown in open position, the valve12 has been moved from its seat 11 to open position by the action of the solenoid 22. When it is desired to close the valve 12, the solenoid 17 is energized, which action will pull downwardly on the core 20, thereby moving the valve 12 into engagement with the valve seat 11, consequently cutting off the flow of liquid.
Valve stem 16 is provided with a disc 23, m with opposite sides of which the arms 24 have a hinged connection at 25, and which arms are adapted to hold the valve 12 in open or closed positions. The outer ends of the arms 24 are hingedly connected at 26 to slide bars 27, which are in alinement with each other and slidably mounted in brackets 28, and the bars 27 are connected together at their inner ends by means of a coiled spring 29, which coiled spring has a sufficient contracting force to maintain the valve 12 seated in the seat 11 against the action of the pressure within the pipe 8, but not suificient to prevent the'operation of the solenoids when moving the valve to closed or open positions. Assuming the valve is in open position as shown, and it is desired to close said valve, the solenoid 17 is energized, which action will force the core 20 downwardly, and will move the valve stem 16 downwardly, thereby moving the arms 24 downwardly at their inner ends towards alined position, and at the time stretching the spring 19. Just as soon as the ends of the arms 24 pass the alined position, the contracting force of the spring 29 will move the slide bars 27 inwardly, then after the arms 24: assume substantially the opposite position to that shown, said spring 29 will maintain the valve 12 seated on the valve seat 11 against the pressure in the pipe 8. we
The spring means is necessary for maintaining the valve in closed position, as it is obvious that after the operation of the solenoid 17, it would naturally be deenergized. In moving the valve 12 to open position as shown the operation is reversed, but it is controlled by energizing the solenoid 22, which Will move the core 21 upwardly.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is 2- A valve actuating mechanism comprising a valve stem, means for reciprocating the valve stem, a valve carried by the stem and cooperating with a valve seat when moved in one direction, means for limiting the movement of the valve in the other direction, said mechanism also including axially disposed slide bars at opposite sides of the valve stem and at a right angle thereto, arms hingedly connected to the slide bars and extending inwardly a round disc carried by the valve stem bifurcations in the inner ends of the arms and in which the disc engages and a contractible coiled spring connecting the slide bars.
