l SEAT CONSTRUCTION Filed 001'.. 12, 1928 www EE f4' ATTORNEYO' o pointed out in the l 40 j My invention is illustrated in the accomi Patented Nov. 18, `1930 WILLIAM sivinnnnnnann orniannnnnnf,,WASHINGTON SEAT constin'ufolfl. :rk
Appneanmried october 12, 192s'. y. serial N13. 312,128.
lMy invention relates to improvements in seat Constructions, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described `and claimed.
improvements in the invention disclosed in my Aco-pendingv application, Serial No. 285,493, filed June-14, 1928.` in the above named application, a seat is slidably connected to a swivelled block by means of a plate secured to the underface of theseat I provided with, L-shaped guidesor flanges embracing the block.k This plate and lL- shaped guides or ylangesar'e disclosed as a unitary casting. i
An object of my invention is to ,provide a seat .construction in which means is incory porated for permittingv a seatreturn toA be associated with my construction. n
.A furtherobject is to provide adevicef of the type described'which may be cast in such a manner as toy require a minimum of material and toprovide a maximum of strength and efliciency.
, laterallyv in any direction With respect toits i support or mounting, and inwhicli the seat return may beincorporated in such a man rner as Anot to interfere With` the eflicient operatioi'i of the device.
Other objects andV advantages Will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly appended claims.

The guide casing 4 is provided with an; opening 7 and flanges 81Whic'h are disposed adj acent the seat Svvhen the casing isjplaced in positioii.- The guide casing 4 is Vsubstantially rectangular and elongated, asslioivn in Figure 2.
Y A sliding member 9k is disposed Within the guide casing, see Figure 3, and is provided With an integral shank portion 10. The shank portion-10 is revolubly disposed Within an "opening inthe standard 2, as shown Vat 1l "iirFigure' 4.f Thesldingm'ember'Q is"re- VVcesse'dat l2 and is provided With4 a flange portion 13'for reinforcing purposes.y Aslide Within l"the guide casing 4 and betweenftl'ie sliding member 9 and the seat Y Theslidingplate 141s preferably a j coldfrolled steel plate, thepurpose of Which 1s toi provide a sliding surface fortlie sliding member `9.V i

spring 22 Will tend to move the seat 3 to `a predetermined position. Usually this position is such that'the seat is positioned at sub- Y stantially 90 With respect to the counter. Vhen an occupant sits down at the counter', the seat is rotated against the tension of the spring, whereby the seat is positioned normally before the counter. The purpose of the seat return construction is to provide p lo means whereby seats such as kare commonly used at counters will assume a predetermined position when not occupied. In other Words, the seats are automatically' aligned as soon as they are unoccupied. In addition to this, 15 the seat is positioned soV that it is a relatively easy matter for an occupant to Walk up to the seat, swing it slightly, and to position the seat normally With respect to the counter. The plurality of openings 16 is o provided forpermitting the pin to he placed invanyv one of the openings for attaining various degrees of adjustment 'in connection With the seat return.
, From the foregoing description of the va- 5 rions parts of the device, the operation thereof may he readily'understood. In Figure 4 I haveshovvn a seat assembly incorporating my invention. In o aeration it Willrbe seen that the seat S-may e moved laterally with fm respect to the standard 2. The shank 10 is revolubly supported so thatthe seat 3 is permitted to be' rotated With respect to the standard 2 and at the same time tombe moved laterally with respect thereto. The steel plateI gf.; 14: provides a sliding surface for thesliding` member 9 and-'at the same time protects `the' seat 3. y i i I claim: l 1.. `A seat construction comprising a seat, 4a'. a guide casing secured to the seat and having an opel'ling therein, al sliding member disposed WithinV the guide casing and having a shank projecting through the opening in said guide casing, and a pin secured toV said 45 sliding member and adapted to be connected with a seat return. y Y
2. `A seat construction comprising a seat, a guide casingv secured to the seat and having an opening thereimsaidguide casing being provided Withianges surrounding said opening and spaced :from said seat, a sliding member disposed Within said guide casing and having an integral shank projecting through said openinga standard having an opening lIor revolublyreceiving said shank, whereby the seatvv` may be rotated with respect to the standard and movedlaterally with respect to the latter, and a. seat return mounted upon said standard andoperatively' connected with an. said sliding member.' g VSigned at Chicago,A inthe county of ACook and State of I1linois,vthis2d day o'lOctober, A.I).1928 i i Y WILLIAM S.
