This invention relates to a portable, sanitary drinking fountain'and has for its pri-' mary object to provide, in amanner as hereinafter set forth, a device of such class which ma be quickly, securely and removably attac ed to the discharge end of a faucet or pump whereby water ejected from such faucet or pump will be substantially in the form of a jet discharged in an upward direction to enable the user of the fountain to obtaina drink in a convenient and sanitary manner.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manneras hereinafter set forth, a portable, sanitary drinking fountain which is simple in its construction and arrangement, compact, strong, durable, thoroughly eflicient in its use, conveniently attached and removed when occasion requires, readily assembled and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be had which will fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view tion as shown, the constructive arrangement of each is such whereby the amount of water directed upwardly can be regulated or shut off entirely, and .which is provided for by setting up each embodiment with. a water directing element and a coupling element, and with said elements slidable relative to each other.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings, the fountain illustrated thereby comprlses a water directin element and a coupling element referre to generally at l and 2 respectively. Said elements are slid ably connected together and with the coupling element arranged upon the top of and of less length than the directing element.
The element 1 is hollow, open at its top, of segmental contour in side elevation and of substantially semi-oval shaped contour in vertical section. The element 1 is of the desired length, height and width and includes a rounded bottom 3, rounded ends 4, and a pair of side walls 5, 6. The top edge of each side wall has extending therefrom a right angularly disposed, lateral flange 8 of less length than that of edge 7. The flanges 8 are oppositely disposed and have their ends positioned adj acent the ends of edges 7. Each end of each flange 8 is formed with a depending stop 9. The purpose of the stops 9 will be presently referred to. The element 1 is preferably stamped from a single piece of non-corrosive, metallic material.
The coupling element 2 is also formed from a single length of non-corrosive, metallic material and comprises a plate 10 of less length than flanges 8. Projecting from each side of plate 10 is an angle-shaped flange 11 for overlapping a flange 8. whereby the coupling element 2 is connected to and slidably mounted upon the top of the directing element 1. The sliding movement of the element 1 relative to the element 2, or the element 2 relative to the element 1 is arrested or limited in either direction by the stops 9 formed at the ends of the flanges 8. l

As element 2- is slidably connected to element 1 the size of the intake 17 or outlet 18 can be regulated and further element 2 can be shifted relative to element 1-in the manner whereby the intake 17 will be entirely closed.
' In the modified form shown in Figures 5 and 6, the water directing element is generally indicated at 19 and the coupling element generally indicated at 20. Said elements 19 and 20 are slidably connected together and one can be shifted relative to the other. The shapeof element 19 corresponds to the shape of element 1. Element 19 is constructed similar to element 1, with this exception, that element 19 is not provided with the flanges 8, but is formed at the top edges of its sides with a pair of upstanding, oppositely extending flanges 21 of semi-circular cross section to provide grooves 22. The flanges 21 are of less length than the top edges and side walls of the element 19 and terminate adjacent the ends of such edges.
The coupling element 20 comprises a rectangular plate 23 of less length than the flanges 21. The plate 23 is slidably mounted a in the grooves 22 and is provided at one end with an upstanding, outwardly curved abutment 24 and a resilient clamp 25 which is arranged forwardly of and in spaced relation with respect to the abutment 24; and inclines in a direction toward the latter. The element 20 in connection with the element 19'provides the latter with an intake 26 and an outlet 27.

As the elements.19 and 20 can be shifted relatively to each other the size of the intake 26 and outlet 27 can be varied and further the inlet 26 can be completely closed in a manner to shut off the waterfrom the faucet to the element 19.
In the form' shown in Figures 7 and 8 a water directing element is indicated generally at 28 and a coupling element generally at 29. The element 28 is of'V-shaped cross section, hollow and includes a top wall 30 of less length than the length of element 28 to proi2de the latter with an intake 31 and an outlet The coupling element 29' comprises a plate 33 which slides against the inner face of the wall 30 and which is of a length to vary the size of intake 31 and also to close the latter if desired. The plate 33 is also of a length to vary the size of the outlet 32. Projecting upwardly from one end of plate 33is an arm 34 positioned in the path of the wall 30 whereby the movement of plate 33 in one direction will be arrested by the end 35 of wall 30. arm 34 is a yoke-shaped member 36having its base seating on and slidably mounted on the upper face of wall 30. The member 36 has that arm 37 thereof of greater length than its arm 38. Carried by the arm 37 is an abutment 39, in the form of a headed screw having threaded engagement with the arm 37 and which coacts with the arm 34 for the purpose of detachably securing the form of fountain shown in Figures 7 and 8 to the discharge end 16 of the faucet, and in thisconnection the arm 34 will be positoned against the inner face of the faucet and the screw 39 bear against the outer face of the faucet t0 detachably secure the fountain below and projecting laterally with respect to the faucet and with the discharge end of the faucet located over the intake 31.
It is thought, the many advantages of a portable, sanitary drinking fountain in ac cordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A portable drinking fountain comprising a hollow, open top water directing element, and a coupling element slidably connected to-said directing element at the top thereof and coacting with the directing element to provide the latter at one end of its top with a water intake and at its other end with awater outlet, said coupling element being adjustable to provide for varyin the size of and the closing of the intake and or varying the size of the said outlet, said coupling element provided withmeans at one end for detachably securing said directing element in position to receive water at the intake 1 thereof, said directing elementhaving means for arresting the adjustment of the coupling element when adjustedin opposite directions lengthwise of the directing element.

A portable drinking fountain comprising a'hollow, open top water directing element, and a coupling element slidably connected to said directing element at the top thereof and coacting with the directing element to provide the latter at one end of its top with a water intake and at its other end with a water outlet, said coupling element being adjustable to provide for varying the size of and the closing of the intake and for varying the size of the said outlet, said coupling element provided with means at one end for detachably securing said directing element in position to receive water at the in take thereof, said directing element being of.
